Stockholm After landing in Stockholm the unit went over to the office of White Arkitekter, the architects in charge of the new masterplan of Kiruna. They had prepared two presentations for us, in the first one they presented their work flow and technical projects using experimental softwares. The second was with Krister Lindstedt, the project leader of the Kiruna master plan development. In the end they kindly gave us a key to their office in Kiruna for use for working in while we where there.

Train Journey Across Sweden
By Emanuele
An amazing 16 hour train journey took us across Sweden to the Abisko National Park. Some of us woke up with snow in their cabin... where the rest of us discovered the stunning views of mountains, icy lakes and reindeers. Hours where spent just looking out the window.

Katterjokk/Riksgrensen After settling in to the cabins (which we discovered had a sauna!) we had lunch at the restaurant where most of us tried reindeer for the first time. To make the most out of the daylight hours left, we went for a walk all the way to the border with Norway where we discovered that a new hotel was being built around the old train rotation station. Narvik We had Saturday free to explore the area. A small group of us took the train over to Narvik in Norway. This was once called the Queens Harbour before LKAB established its shipping port for its Iron ore to be exported out of the fjords. You can also see a mountain silhouette called the ‘Sleeping Queen’ just over the ski-slope, which the group eagerly explored.

Katterjokk The rest of us decided to stay in Katterjokk and climb one of the mountains. We experienced the coldest weather conditions to date -27 degrees C. When we reached to the top the views were breathtaking. We waited for the sun to set and we sledged all the way down with Pulka (Swedish for sledge). In the evening when everyone was back from Narvik, we decided to climb the mountain again hoping to see the magical aurora borealis. And we did!

Abisko - Scientific Research Centre
By Emanuele
On our way to Kiruna we had the chance to visit Abisko Scientific Research Station. It has international standard facilities that support a range of research from observation and monitoring to high-tech experimentation within terrestrial and freshwater environments. At arrival we were welcomed by Keith Larson- Researcher at the climate impact research centre at UmeĂĽ University. He showed us around the main complex including the accommodation where the Swedish Royal family used to stay when visiting the centre. He also showed us some of the main laboratories, where a lot of the research and experiments are taking place. He presented a lecture on Climate change research in Sweden, which covered the main issues and concerns that we as designers will have to consider when developing our design proposals in Kiruna.

Town Hall The original town hall was a 1960 listed building that won several architectural awards, but has been recently de-listed in order to be demolished during 2018. It currently hosts an exhibition about the move. The clock tower has been moved from its original position on top of the original town hall to the side of the new town hall. Here we enjoyed a presentation by Goran Cars who is the Planning director appointed to oversee the move of Kiruna.

Church - Sweden’s Most Beautiful Building Recognised as Sweden’s most beautiful building by popular vote, there was no doubt this one needed to be moved, but not just the building, but even the tower and trees around it.

Timber
By Kasia
Having a drone and cameras with us, we set a goal to capture and scan as many of these buildings as possible. Moving essential buildings from the old town into the new is an integral part of the new master plan. Having learnt how to process scans into 3D models in the last semester, the unit’s goal is now to recreate in 3D Virtual Reality our own interpretation of the new Kiruna.

Kiruna Vernacular Architecture Style
By Freddie
We interviewed the locals and asked about their favorite buildings and meeting places. The favorite was the old 1920’s LKAB timber buildings. Details like the scaled timber cladding could be considered a local building topology.

LKAB the Mine that Founded the ‘Model City’
What we learnt from the mine tour? LKAB is the biggest producer of iron ore in Europe. They employ approximately 4000 people. Most people in Kiruna find employment either in the mine or the tourist industry. The extraction of iron ore is what is causing the ground to erode and why the city is moving.
