About IFRA UK The Association now known as IFRA UK was founded in the early 1940s to represent the fragrance industry and in particular to promote the safe enjoyment of fragrances. Some thirty years later, IFRA United Kingdom - together with nine other national associations - joined together to form IFRA, the global federation. All member associations of IFRA came together to collaborate on forming a common set of Standards, attitudes and practices which are incorporated in the IFRA Code of Practice. A voluntary approach enables the IFRA Standards to be adopted very rapidly by the worldwide industry as a whole, as these are notified by IFRA directly to its members. Client companies using an IFRA Member can be assured that their fragrances comply with IFRA Standards as set out in the IFRA Code of Practice.

IFRA UK‌ in every sense IFRA develops and promotes Standards that ensure the safe creation, application and enjoyment of fragrance. IFRA promotes...

...a sense of self Our sense of smell is directly connected to the brain’s limbic system which stores our memories and emotions. Fragrances are powerful and, without fragrance, our connections with the world around us would be diminished.

...a sense of understanding Fragrances often help not only to enhance lives through the enjoyment of perfumed products but can even directly help develop a better understanding of the world.

...a sense of creativity The fragrance sector is, above all, a creative industry combining both art and science. Indeed, for many products, the fragrance is the vital differentiating ingredient.

IFRA UK… in every sense ...a sense of responsibility The fragrance industry takes its responsibilities very seriously, particularly its environmental, social and economic responsibilities. All the materials used by the fragrance sector are rigorously assessed for safety. Through initiatives in energy & water conservation, emissions & waste reduction and education & community projects the sector continues to invest in improving the sustainability of its raw materials, its processing of essential oils and its manufacture of fragrance blends.

...a sense of reassurance By having IFRA ‘inside’ your products you can be reassured that you are dealing with professionals for whom quality, safety, compliance and excellence are considered essential.

...a sense of prosperity Fragrance blends for personal care products account for half of the industry’s business, while household care products and fine fragrances make up a quarter each, directly sustaining many thousands of jobs in the UK and elsewhere.

IFRA Code of Practice The IFRA Code of Practice is a comprehensive document that supports the IFRA commitment to provide products that are safe for humans and for the environment. The Code of Practice applies to the manufacture and handling of all fragrance materials, for all types of applications and contains the full set of IFRA Standards. Abiding by the IFRA Code of Practice is a prerequisite for all fragrance supplier companies that are members of IFRA UK.

IFRA Standards The IFRA Standards form the basis for the globally accepted and recognized risk management system for the safe use of fragrance ingredients and is the self-regulating system of the industry, based on risk assessments carried out by an independent expert panel.
