Find out more about your sense of smell
One important symptom of COVID-19 – the loss of your sense of smell – has highlighted how vital this sense is to our daily lives. This is why we have created a new resource – Fragrance Matters. It will help people understand the science of smell, showcase new research and quirky facts, whilst also listing organisations that can support people with smell loss, or ‘Anosmia’ as it is known.

Our ability to smell affects us in many ways – as an early warning system that can alert us to danger, a memory arouser that can uplift our mood and emotions...

IFRA UK Fragrance Forum 2021
Welcome to the IFRA UK Fragrance Forum 2021.
What a pleasure it is to be able to bring people together in person once again at such a prestigious venue for an inspiring day of talks and presentations.
Whilst it has been a challenging and strange time for many of us, it has not been without its successes. In the early days of the pandemic, we realised what a dynamic industry we belong to. We saw our members switch working practices whilst continuing to play their part in helping with the supply of hand and surface sanitiser, at a time when global supplies could not meet demand.
IFRA UK has also been finding new ways to work with the situation in which we find ourselves. We were unable to hold the Fragrance Forum last October. Instead we held an online event that brought together people from across the industry as we launched ‘Olfaction: A Journey’. This book offers a reflective celebration of the Fragrance Forum and allows readers to dip into the ideas presented by past speakers, organised by theme. It offers a fascinating journey through ten years of olfactory research. It has been incredibly well received and is available at a special Forum rate should you wish to buy a copy today.
The pandemic has made a lot of us stop and think about what really matters and how we might support and help others. You will recall last year we formed a working group called ‘Changing Lives Through Fragrance’. This group has continued to work on a number of projects which will gather momentum as life opens up.
IFRA UK has, as part of that initiative, designed an interesting and eclectic website called ‘Fragrance Matters’ that informs on many levels, from helping people learn some new and quirky facts about our sense of smell, to taking a deeper dive into the world of olfaction through highlighting wider research, activities and events. Do take a look at www.fragrancematters.org and explore some of the fascinating facts. The poster opposite links to the website via the QR code. Please use the loose copy enclosed with your programme to help us spread the word, and feel free to ask us for more! Let us know if you have any ideas and content that you think would enhance the site further. There will be more exciting projects from this group in the future.
But now to the day at hand. We really want to thank all of our speakers for giving up so much of their time to share their extraordinary work and research with us. It is much appreciated, and even more so during these complex times. Also a huge thank you to today’s Chair, Professor Barry C Smith who has an amazing understanding of fragrance and the sense of smell and is always such a pleasure to work with. We are of course enormously grateful to all our sponsors. We couldn’t produce this event without them. Finally thanks to IFRA who this year are presenting this event with us.
It is going to be a fantastic day, which we are also livestreaming for those unable to join us in person.
This will be our tenth Fragrance Forum and these interesting times make us all evaluate what we are doing – is this a moment after ten years of the Forum to make it into something different in the future? We would welcome your thoughts, either as part of the feedback form or more informally as we look to the next ten years.
Enjoy the day and join us for a drink afterwards to celebrate ten years of the Forum.
Lisa, Julie and Eliza
UNIQUE. SAFE. ESSENTIAL.
FRAGRANCE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE
Fragrances play a unique role in our lives: they are embedded in our culture and heritage; they are statements of imagination and creativity; they connect us to places and memories.
The International Fragrance Association is the global representative body of the fragrance industry, bringing together seven multinational members as well as hundreds of small businesses around the world via 22 National Associations
Through our Code of Practice and our independently-supervised IFRA Standards program, we promote the safe use of fragrance, enhance consumer trust and support the creation of the safe and sustainable products of the future.
In addition to supporting members, we work with regulators, policymakers and other stakeholders to highlight our contribution to jobs and economic prosperity, and the essential role fragrance plays in our lives and well-being
From perfumes to shower gels, shampoos to cleaning products, soaps to scented candles, fragrance makes the difference: the key element that helps bring pleasure, joy, comfort and confidence to the daily lives of people around the world.

Professor Barry C Smith is director of the Institute of Philosophy at the University of London’s School of Advanced Study. He is the founding director of its Centre for the Study of the Senses, which pioneers collaborative research links between philosophers, psychologists and neuroscientists. Barry works on the multisensory nature of perceptual experience, taste, smell and flavour. He has published theoretical and experimental papers, writing in Nature, Food Quality and Preference and Chemical Senses and is the editor of Questions of Taste: the philosophy of wine (Oxford University Press). In his research he collaborates with chefs and artists, and recently he has been working with clinicians and patient groups on Covid-induced anosmia and parosmia. He is a frequent broadcaster, appearing on BBC One’s Masterchef and on Radio 4’s The Kitchen Cabinet. In 2017 he wrote and presented a ten-part series for BBC Radio 4 called The Uncommon Senses, and in 2019, a five-part series, The Art and Science of Blending. He is a regular contributor to The World of Fine Wine.
Lisa Hipgrave – Director, International Fragrance Association UK
Within weeks of joining the industry as a trainee perfumer, Lisa knew that she had found the perfect career that balanced art with science.

Speakers
Noam Sobel, Director of the National Center for Human Brain Imaging and Research Weizmann Institute, Israel
ProfessorAfter completing his undergraduate education at Tel Aviv University, Noam Sobel joined the prestigious PhD neuroscience program at Stanford University, from which he graduated with high honors, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the California Institute of Technology. Prior to joining the Weizmann Institute of Science, Noam was an Associate Professor at the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute at the University of California at Berkeley. He is currently the Director of the National Center for Human Brain Imaging and Research.
Professor Sobel’s research focuses on unveiling the complex nature and brain mechanisms of the human olfactory system, which plays a key role not only in smelling, but also in our most basic social interactions, emotions, and recollections. Faulty functions of this system may indicate early signs of neurological and cognitive deteriorations, for example, in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. His group pioneered the development and construction of olfactometers—devices that precisely generate odors—and contributed to the development of “electronic noses”—devices that mimic the animal nose in its ability to transform molecules to percepts. Using these devices, his group discovered several key concepts in the neurobiology of olfaction, for instance, they have developed a metric that allows measuring smells and predicting the brain response that they will induce; they have discovered that human tears contain a chemical that once smelled induces a host of effects such as drop in testosterone; and they have developed technology that enables severely disabled people to communicate and steer a wheelchair by simply sniffing.
Professor Sobel and his group have been routinely published in such well respected journals as Science, Nature, PNAS and Nature Neuroscience, and their work has resulted in several patents for medical devices that are now being tested in patients. These achievements have been recognized in several awards including the Society for Neuroscience Lindsley Prize (2000), the Chemical Senses Association Young Investigator Award (2007), the Moskowitz Jacobs Inc. Award for Research Excellence in the Psychophysics of Taste and Smell (2003), and the Juludan Research Prize from the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology (2011). In 2012, Professor Sobel was the recipient of the Rappaport Prize for Biomedical Sciences.
