IFRA UK Fragrance Forum 2016

elcome to IFRA United Kingdom’s Fragrance Forum 2016.

We are delighted to be returning to The Wellcome Trust Lecture Theatre at The Royal Society and to welcome so many guests and members to attend this exciting annual symposium which has become such a stimulating fixture in the perfumery calendar.

Today we take the theme: Do You Smell Well? or, if you prefer, Do You Smell? Well!

IFRA UK’s members develop fragrances that enhance well-being and the enjoyment of life. This year we have invited a number of eminent speakers to address the topic of smell, fragrance and well-being. They will discuss the therapeutic aspects of fragrance and fragrance materials, both now and historically, as well as the health, psychological and social problems for those who don’t smell well or don’t smell at all. To round off the day, we will be reviewing some interesting wines for their smell as well as their taste. During the course of today, we will range across all age groups, from smell and new-born babies to the effects of smell for those older people with dementia.

IFRA UK’s Members, many of whom we welcome today, are experts in fragrance creation.

That expertise is backed and informed by IFRA ensuring that, by using our Members, customers are guaranteed the benefits accruing from the IFRA Code of Practice. Nick Pickthall, IFRA UK Chairman Having grown up with CPL, Nick officially joined the company 16 years ago and has gained valuable experience of the business in several key management positions in the UK, USA and most recently in South America where he held the title of Managing Director CPL Aromas Latin America. He is now COO of the company and moved with his family from Colombia to the UK where is now based at the UK headquarters in Bishop’s Stortford.

The role of COO is a new position within the company and reflects the growing size and stature of the business.

Predominantly operating from CPL’s UK sites, Nick is responsible for key areas of the groups’ global operations including key customer partnerships helping to strengthen the company’s relationship with a number of CPL’s major global clients.

Linda Harman, Director and Co-Founder, ReminiScent Linda Harman first joined the fragrance industry in 1985, initially working in the Fragrance Research laboratories of Quest International before moving into a career in fragrance communication and public relations for both Quest and Givaudan that went on to last 30 years, saw several mergers and acquisitions, and included being an active member of the IFRA Communications Working Group and a Board member of CEW UK. A passionate advocate for the power of the sense of smell and its contribution to human wellbeing, Linda has recently co-founded ReminiScent Ltd - a company that aims to help people living with dementia and other mental illness through using the sense of smell to stimulate engagement with their carers and families.

Jonathan has over 25 years’ experience in the fragrance and flavour industry, with 18 of these spent at Mane where he is Managing Director of Mane UK. His first degree was from Queen Elizabeth College, University of London in Food Science & Physiology. He also holds a PGCE from Leicester University and a Certificate in Business Administration from Warwick Business School.

Jonathan taught outdoor pursuits and Biology before moving into sales.

After a role in flavour sales at PFW, he moved to work in fragrance at Harmann & Reimer, joining Mane in 1994.

Speakers John J Johnston, University College London

John J Johnston is a freelance writer and lecturer in the fields of Egyptology, Classics and cultural history. In addition to publishing articles in a variety of books and journals, both academic and general, he has jointly edited the books Narratives of Egypt and the Near East: Literary Linguistic Approaches (Peeters, 2011), A Good Scribe and n Exceedingly Wise Man: Studies in Honour of W J Tait (Golden House Press, 2014), and the short story anthology Unearthed (Jurassic London, 2013), for which his introductory essay on the mummy as cultural phenomenon was shortlisted for a prestigious British Science Fiction Association Award.

A former Vice Chair of the Egypt Exploration Society (2010-2015), John has lectured for numerous major institutions throughout the UK, including the British Museum, the Royal Observatory Greenwich, the British Film Institute and the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology.

He is currently completing his Ph.D at University College London on the excavation and reception of Late Period mummies from the cemeteries of Akhmim.

Dr Benoist Schaal trained in neuroscience, anthropology, and behavioral biology at the Universities of Strasbourg and Besançon. He is Director of Research at the National Center for Scientific Research and headed the Dijon Centre for Smell and Taste Science (2002-2009).

His research focuses on the multiple roles of olfaction in the adaptive cognition of infant mammals of various species. He is especially interested in the ways humans rely on odour impressions to fine-tune their effects, behaviour and multisensory knowledge.

In addition to numerous papers and invited chapters in scientific books, he has edited Smell Function in Children (1997, PUF, Paris, in French), coedited Olfaction, Taste, and Cognition (2003, Cambridge University Press, New York), Infants and Children Facing Food (2008, PUF, Paris, in French) and Olfactory Cognition (2012, Benjamins, Amsterdam), and guest-edited The development of oral feeding skills in infants (Int. J. Pediatrics, 2012) and Applied Olfactory Cognition (Frontiers in Psychology, 2014).

Dr Benoist Schaal, Centre des Sciences du Goût, Dijon

Professor Barry C. Smith is director of the Institute of Philosophy at the University of London’s School of Advanced Study. He is the founding director of its Centre for the Study of the Senses, which pioneers collaborative research links between philosophers, psychologists and neuroscientists.

Barry works on the multisensory nature of perceptual experience, taste, smell and flavour. He has published theoretical and experimental papers, writing in Nature, Food Quality and Preference and Flavour and is the editor of Questions of Taste: the philosophy of wine (Oxford University Press).

In his research he collaborates with chefs and artists, and consults for the food and drinks industry. He is a frequent broadcaster, appearing on BBC One’s Masterchef and on Radio 4’s The Kitchen Cabinet. In 2010 he wrote and presented a four-part series for the BBC World Service called The Mysteries of the Brain. He is a regular contributor to The World of Fine Wine and is wine columnist for Prospect Magazine.

Speakers Dr Mark D. Evans, De Montfort University, Leicester

Dr Mark Evans is a Lecturer in Biomedical and Medical Science at De Montfort University, Leicester. Born and raised in Wolverhampton he is a graduate of Brunel University, London [B.Sc. (Hons) in Applied Biochemistry] and Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, USA (Ph.D in Biochemistry/Organic Chemistry) with an extensive academic and research background in the area of free radical biology and oxidative stress. He has been a post-doctoral scientist then lecturer in the Department of Pathology and later Department of Cancer Studies at The University of Leicester prior to taking up his present position at De Montfort University, Leicester.

Dr Evans has active research interests in the therapeutic potential of natural products, primarily anti-cancer activity and mechanism particularly in relation to frankincense, maintaining active collaborations in this area with colleagues at The University of Leicester and in The Sultanate of Oman.

Vitaliy Zhyhun is a Client Business Partner in Nielsen’s Health & Beauty Business Unit.

A key focus of his role is to partner with clients and help them grow and win in the market place mainly via insight delivery and assistance in decision making.

His last eight years at Nielsen have been focused on working across UK healthcare and and beauty client organisations including GlaxoSmithKline, L’Oreal, Church & Dwight, Philips, Colgate, Bayer and others.

After graduating from Leicester University Medical School, Mr Philpott undertook research into developing apparatus for testing the sense of smell.

During specialist training he spent a year at the St Paul’s Sinus Centre in Vancouver, Canada learning advanced skills in endoscopic sinus surgery for inflammatory diseases of the nose and sinuses as well as tumours of the sinuses and anterior skull base. Mr Philpott also spent time at the Dresden University Smell and Taste Clinic learning techniques for assessing and researching the sense of smell.

He was appointed as an academic surgeon at the University of East Anglia in 2010, funded in part by the Anthony Long Trust. As a senior lecturer at Norwich Medical School, he is involved in a number of research projects including leading a national study to understand risk factors that contribute to chronic sinusitis. He is also ENT Lead for the Eastern Clinical Research Network, Champion of Public and Patient Involvement in research and Chair of the British Rhinological Society Research Group where he has helped to shape the national research priorities for nose and sinus diseases.

Late in 2010, Mr Philpott set up the first Smell and Taste Clinic to be established in the UK and receives referrals from around the country. In 2012 he met Fifth Sense founder, Duncan Boak and discussed the need for a patient support group for all nasal disorders, but specifically for patients who suffer with smell and taste disorders. Since then he has worked closely with Duncan to provide a clinical input into the emerging charity of Fifth Sense and now sits on the Board of Trustees as Director of Research.
