IFRA UK Fragrance Forum 2018

W

elcome to the eighth IFRA UK Fragrance Forum. This is always a key highlight of the year for us as it provides a great opportunity for members and associates to come together outside of everyday work and turn our attention to broader themes and activities that affect or influence our industry. This year we have adopted the theme of Scentimental – Fragrance on the Mind, and it is no accident that we are showcasing this theme on World Mental Health Day. Our sense of smell has been associated with our well-being for many decades now - from using fragrance to mask bad odours to creating a sense of ambiance and contentedness to enhance how we feel. Alongside that, we have been observing the growing interest and research in the area of mental health and neurodegenerative diseases, and the link with olfaction. We have lined up a fantastic range of speakers who will be showcasing different areas of research linking our minds and olfaction, as well as a talk exploring growth of ambient scent in our everyday lives and the impact that can have on our wellbeing. Topics include the ability to detect the smell of Parkinson’s and the ensuing research this led to; the role olfaction plays in detecting Alzheimer’s Disease; why certain smells are ‘hard wired’ into our brains and how they affect our wellbeing and the link between olfaction and cognitive function. We have also come to a new venue this year at the Wellcome Collection. Through its exhibitions, collections, live programming, digital, broadcast and publishing, it creates opportunities for people to think deeply about the connections between science, medicine, life and art. We thought it was an appropriate setting for what we hope to achieve in staging the Fragrance Forum. At the end of the event, you may also want to make time to visit the fascinating exhibition ‘Living with buildings’ – a major exhibition about health and architecture, which examines the positive and negative influence buildings have on our physical and mental health. We do hope you will enjoy the day, which is made possible by the kind support of our sponsors who are acknowledged on page 15 of this programme.

Speakers Dr Tilo Kunath Dr Tilo Kunath obtained his PhD from the University of Toronto in 2003 investigating novel stem cell systems. His postdoctoral studies at the Institute for Stem Cell Research at the University of Edinburgh were focused on neural induction and differentiation of mouse and human embryonic stem (ES) cells. He has run his own laboratory in the MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine in Edinburgh since 2007, where he has pioneered the use of patient-specific induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell technologies to model Parkinson’s disease. He met Joy Milne at a public seminar she attended in 2012. Joy Milne Joy Milne believes serendipity has taken her life in some very strange directions, many of which she did not expect or plan. She grew up with synesthesia, but did not appreciate its full potential until later in life. Parkinson’s opened a door that neither she or her husband expected, given their backgrounds as a nurse and doctor, respectively. She has sometimes found it difficult, but now realises the extent to which it influences her life. Joy’s ability to detect the change in odour in her husband with Parkinson’s disease led to her involvement in the research with Dr Kunath and Professor Barran and has given her the opportunity to open an olfactory library which has existed since childhood. Synesthesia is expressed through Joy’s art and embroidery as well as designing gardens for herself and friends.

Professor Perdita Barran Professor Perdita Barran holds a Chair of Mass Spectrometry in the School of Chemistry and is Director of the Michael Barber Centre for Collaborative Mass Spectrometry at the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology, The University of Manchester, UK. She is Theme Leader for Biological Mass Spectrometry for the Rosalind Franklin Institute. Her research interests include: Biological mass spectrometry; Instrument and technique development; Protein structure and interactions; Dynamic and Disordered Systems; Parkinson’s disease Diagnostics; HDX-MS; Proteomics; and Molecular modeling.

Dr Latha Velayudhan, King’s College, London Dr Latha Velayudhan is a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist working at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscienecs (IoPPN), King’s College London, UK. She trained in Old Age Psychiatry at the South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, UK and completed MD(Res) at the IoPPN. Her main research includes clinical and biological markers for dementia, specifically Alzheimer’s disease, young onset dementia and risk of dementia with diabetes. She has published widely in the areas of dementia and leads the memory service at Lewisham, London.

Speakers Lizzie Ostrom, Consultant and Producer Lizzie Ostrom is one of the UK’s most exciting commentators on all things scent. She’s produced hundreds of events to create a sense of excitement around the sense of smell - from psychology to science, arts and culture. She’s the author of Perfume: A Century of Scents, and last year co-curated Somerset House’s landmark exhibition, Perfume: A Sensory Journey Through Contemporary Scents. Lizzie has been supporting brands, production companies and artists in realising scent-based installations, and is currently interested in how business and consumers can meet as the industry evolves to be more transparent.

A graduate of the Royal College of Art, his work has been shown at in many highprofile galleries including: TATE Britain; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chengdu; Saatchi Gallery; Victoria and Albert Museum; Institute for Contemporary Art, London; His most recent solo exhibition was at Somerset House, London.

He is Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Exeter Medical School and holds visiting professorships at three other Universities. Since starting his PhD in 1973, he has specialised in the development and application of automated tests of cognitive function in worldwide clinical trials and has published over 300 papers in this area. Dr Mark Moss, Northumbria University Dr Mark Moss studied Applied Chemistry and worked for ten years in the tanning industry before returning to education to study Psychology. He gained a firstclass honours degree in 1995 and won the British Psychological Society’s award for the best undergraduate project. His work, entitled “Can oxygen enhance memory?” was published in ‘Psychopharmacology’ and was the foundation for his PhD which he completed under the supervision of Prof Keith Wesnes. Joining the academic team at Northumbria his research interests diversified and he was introduced to the sphere of essential oils by an undergraduate in 2002; a collaboration that led to his first paper in the area in 2003. He maintained an interest with a particular focus on rosemary, publishing a number of experimental studies in the area, co-authored with undergraduate or postgraduate students. His academic journey has seen him rise to Head of Department of Psychology at Northumbria, a post he has held for the last twelve years. When he finds the time the area of aromas and their impact on human behaviour remains a main focus of his attention.
