elcome to IFRA United Kingdom’s Fragrance Forum 2017.

We are delighted to welcome so many of you to our seventh Fragrance Forum which is yet again at full capacity. This is always a highlight of our year as it is a great opportunity for our members to come together and hear about some exciting new initiatives, and also to spend time with each other in a thought-provoking environment.

This year we have adopted the theme of Scents and Sensibility, which we thought was appropriate in a year which marks Jane Austen’s 200th anniversary.

We hope you will agree that we have devised a fascinating programme that explores a myriad of topics about how smell and fragrance impacts on all walks of life – from helping to tackle disease, to influencing the art that is created, to the choices we make when buying products.

We will also hear how fragrance quite literally affects our brains, including how we can map the ‘smell scape’ of the very streets around us in our cities.

Whilst it is exciting to consider some different perspectives, it is also good to remind ourselves of the jobs you do everyday – providing a safe environment for the creation of fragrances and products that truly enhance people’s lives.

It is often said that if we smell good, we feel good. We all know that fragrance has the ability to lift our mood, bring back a memory, or even completely transport us to another time and place. That is why this year we have developed a new information leaflet that you will find in your conference bags, about the benefits of fragrance in its broadest terms. We hope you will find it a useful and informative resource.

Lisa Hipgrave, IFRA UK Lisa started her career in the fragrance industry with Zimmermann Hobbs, subsequently spending 17 years at Belmay Fragrances working her way from Senior Perfumer to the Director of the European division.

Lisa joined IFRA UK as its Director in 2006 and has enjoyed the diverse role ever since. She focuses on supporting the development and implementation of policy, maintaining a highprofile representation of the industry and managing the operation of the association. Lisa is also responsible for ensuring that the association’s policies and views are correctly communicated to target audiences and ensuring that the association is represented in other forums.

She is the IFRA European Executive Board Vice Chair and a member of the IFRA European Technical Committee. Lisa also attends the IFRA UK Technical Advisory Group, and represents the UK industry as part of the Alliance of Chemical Associations.

David O’Leary, IFRA David is Communications Director at the International Fragrance Association (IFRA).

Based in Brussels for 15 years, David was previously Communications Director for think-tank Friends of Europe.

He has also worked for a leading public affairs and communications agency and an international trade association.

He began his career as a political aide to two Members of the European Parliament.

Clare Moss, Seven Scent Ltd Clare is the Business Unit Director for Seven Scent Ltd, a UK based fragrance house that has been operating for over 25 years as part of the PZ Cussons Group.

Clare has spent most of her career within PZ Cussons, holding a number of senior supply chain leadership roles before joining Seven Scent to head up the Fragrance House 3 years ago.

She now leads the team that creates fragrances for many well-known Global consumer brands and having joined the IFRA UK Executive in 2014, was voted in as Vice Chairman last October.

Speakers Dr Claire Guest, Medical Detection Dogs Claire obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology in 1986, followed by a MSc in Psychology by research. In 1992 Claire became a full member of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors, and subsequently became Chair for three years. From 1987 Claire worked full-time at the charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, leaving her final post of Director of Operations and Research in May 2007.

Claire has been involved in the training of dogs for tasks involving scent for over twenty years. Since 2002 she has been professionally involved in training dogs in the detection of human disease through scent. In 2003, Claire was training director of the first programme in the world to train dogs to identify cancer by odour. The findings of this study were published in the British Medical Journal in September 2004.

Currently Claire is Chief Executive and Director of Operations for the charity Medical Detection Dogs, an organisation that trains dogs to identify human disease by odour. We are currently working on a number of pioneering research projects involving canine olfaction, including the training of dogs to detect cancer, blood sugar changes, and Addison’s disease.

Professor James Logan, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine James has more than 10 years of experience in the laboratory and the field – both in the UK and overseas - of controlling insects of medical and veterinary importance. James has a first-class honours degree in Zoology from the University of Aberdeen and an award-winning PhD investigating why some people are bitten more than others by mosquitoes and midges, which was based at Rothamsted Research.

James then led his own research group of researchers within the Chemical Ecology Programme at Rothamsted, before joining the Department of Disease Control at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2010 where he runs his own research group as well as ARCTEC – which is a world-leading independent test centre for consultancy, and the evaluation and development of arthropod pest control technologies.

Dr Christina Bradstreet, The National Gallery Christina is Courses and Events Programmer at the National Gallery.

She has taught 19th-century painting at Birkbeck College as well as guest lectures at Sotheby’s Institute, Royal Holloway College and the Courtauld Institute.

Christina is in the process of publishing her book Scented Visions: Smell in British Art 1850-1910. Her PhD on this subject was awarded Birkbeck’s Anne Humphrey’s Prize for 19th-century studies.

She was Director of Career Services at Sotheby’s Institute of Art and Acting Head of Art History at Godolphin and Latymer. She has served as Honorary Secretary of the Association of Art Historians.

Speakers Kate McClean, Canterbury Christ Church University Kate is a British artist and designer and mapper of urban smellscapes and is Programme Director for Graphic Design at Canterbury Christ Church University, UK. She is a PhD candidate at the Royal College of Art, researching fine-grained, human-centred olfactory perceptions of cities worldwide and the methods by which this information can be rendered visible.

She runs smellscape mapping workshops and leads smellwalks around the world and co-edited a book, Designing with Smell: Practices, Techniques and Challenges (2017). Kate’s design and theoretical work features in broadcast, print and electronic media as well as academic journals.

Dr Daniele Quercia, Bell Labs, Cambridge Daniele leads the Social Dynamics group at Bell Labs in Cambridge.

He has been named one of Fortune magazine’s 2014 Data All-Stars, and spoke about “happy maps” at TED. His research has been focusing in the area of urban informatics and received best paper awards from Ubicomp 2014 and from ICWSM 2015, and an honourable mention from ICWSM 2013.

He was Research Scientist at Yahoo Labs, a Horizon senior researcher at the University of Cambridge, and Postdoctoral Associate at the department of Urban Studies and Planning at MIT. He received his PhD from University College London. His thesis was sponsored by Microsoft Research and was nominated for BCS Best British PhD dissertation in Computer Science.

Dr Clare Jonas, University of East London Clare is a lecturer in psychology at the University of East London, where she does research on human perception and synaesthesia.

At weekends, she can often be found on countryside walks or attempting to guess the names of dogs on Hampstead Heath.

Sarah Hyndman, Type Tasting Type Tasting founder Sarah Hyndman is a graphic designer, author and public speaker, known for her interest in the psychology of type.

Her main area of expertise is multi sensory typography, she works on collaborative research studies with the Crossmodal Research Laboratory at the University of Oxford.

Sarah gained a distinction for her Master’s degree in Typo/Graphics at the London College of Communication (University of the Arts). She worked for agencies such as Hill & Knowlton and Ammunition before running design company With Relish for ten years.

She is a guest tutor in colleges both in the UK and abroad, most recently at the Ecole Intuit Lab in Mumbai, India. She taught the yearlong Experimental Typography evening course at the London College of Communication for six years alongside her commercial practice.

IFRA UK – Information Booklets

FRA United Kingdom has published a new booklet entitled ‘Fragrance - enriching our lives every day’.

The eight page booklet looks at the different ways that fragrance can improve the quality of our lives and also its positive contribution to the economy.

It joins two previously published booklets - ‘IFRA UK - The Benefits of Membership’ and ‘Fragrance Matters’, which outline how IFRA UK helps promote Standards and creativity.

We hope that these publications will be of interest to existing and potential members of IFRA UK and to customers engaged in retailing or manufacturing finished goods.

As Lisa Hipgrave, Director of IFRA UK, says in the foreword: “Working in the fragrance industry engenders a passion for the power of perfume that few want to leave. Our members provide the invisible but vital ingredient that makes the difference to fragranced products of all kinds”.
