ABOUT ME
Hey There. woodworking, aquascaping, and a plethora of other subjects. I find myself obsessed with the quality of materials and how a medium can shape meaning. I feel that this makes me a more confident designer, and all of these skills not only broaden what I am capable of, but also enhanceand inspire my design work. I have a childlike sense of fascination of the world around me.
I’m Jordan - Maker of Things. Just your typical carbon-based life form who has a love for design. I’m currently based out of Lincoln, NE while I work on my undergrad degree and am loving every second of it. I’m constantly fascinated by all facets of life, and am perpetually creating. Graphic Design may be my primary focus, but I feel that I have a wide variety of other skills. I like to consider myself a ‘Maker of Things’. Web design, printmaking, guerrilla marketing, copy writing, photography,
I hope this collection of made things helps you better grasp who I am, and who I am as a designer. C’est la vie,

WORK 01 2014 HAPPINESS SUMMIT An interactive exhibit promoting the idea that plants generate quantifiable amounts of happiness. My research for this project focused on how we, in the modern world, interact with houseplants. I wanted to examine what effect they have on our mood, and what type of relationship we have with them. With the help of Professor Asher, I came to the conclusion that it would be extremely interesting to curate plants from professors and faculty
around campus. The results were a little underwhelming – I emailed 208 faculty members, of which only 5 had plants. Regardless, I worked with what I had. I took this information and created an infographic from the data, plotting where the professors were on campus and including a personal anecdote about their plant. I found that Professor Sandra Williams in the art department had many plants, so I decided it would be interesting to provide a particular spotlight on her. She had plenty of interesting and intriguing anecdotes. Additionally, I included another

poster that detailed how to create a terrarium. Terrariums have always been a (albeit strange) hobby of mine, and I wanted to share how to create one with others. I think that it’s a great creative outlet. I created a hierarchy instruction list for creating one. I wanted to provide those who do not have many plants an excellent avenue to begin caring for plants. For the final panel, I put out a survey for people to take, asking them several questions about their personal experiences with houseplants. I curated about 50 responses, selected the best ones, and displayed them in a grid.

Basil, mint, thyme, sage, succulents, cactus
Once I killed all of them by going on vacation for a week (during the hottest week of the summer) and not getting a plant sitter. I returned home, devastated that they had almost all perished (except the basil--he's a rockstar). Over time, however, all but one came back to life! PLANTS ARE SO RESILIENT. They are currently thriving on my porch and in my kitchen (though I am out of town again for the week, so we'll see how they're fairing when I return).

Lemon plant was cold because nebraska winter, started dropping leaves because not much sun. I warmed him up and positioned him for better sun, now doing great. Wilson is the spider plant that I initially stole from my high school english teacher [Ms. Wilson] (i stole one of the offshoot baby plants, put it in my pocket, planted it at home). Winston is like 1000 times larger now than when I planted him. He will live 4evr. I turn to wilson for literary inspiration

ANDERSON HALL “This is a picture of my Christmas cactus plant. I got the original cutting from my mother's plant and it was just small. It's grown considerably! I love it that it flowers in November, not quite Christmas, but loaded with flowers. Now that my mother has passed away, I enjoy thinking about her when I see the plant.”

“Flapjack kalanchloe - This was a gift from a student. It was funny, because I had really wanted one, but I couldn't find one. Then someone gave this to me. I really love it, I'm looking for a fancy pot for her.”

MANTER HALL “I know this is not completely related to what you are doing, but I was wondering if you have ever been to that little space on the east side of Manter Hall (behind Hamilton, I believe) where they have all these indoor plants. I go there quite often to relax, eat or read. It is quite a magic place.”

WORK 02 DESIGNED EXPERIENCE A piece that connects participants with nostalgiac memories. This project tasked me with creating a designed interactive experience with my semester-long research topic. As a refresher, my topic is studying how we interact with commercials and what tactics they use over time to get us to consume a product. So far the trend that I am noticing is that, well, there’s nothing new under the sun. The past 70 years have mostly been the same persuasive tactics, with a few updates along the way to keep with technology and the faster pace that it brings. The goal with this was to actually get real-world feedback. I wanted to interact with random people on the street and see what they think makes a successful advertisement. It was a study examining which television commercials stick with us through the ages and why. I thought it would also be fun to document the users while they interacted and tried to come up with examples. I created four chalkboard for them to create their memory on.

WORK 03 BETTA FISH STARTER KIT A Package design built from the ground up. The Betta Fish Starter Kit - a venture into the world of package design. I wanted to explore the nuances of creating a product from the ground up, but I also wanted to create something that I myself would buy at a store. I noticed a lack of general knowledge amongst people about caring for fish - a lot of people are too intimidated by fishkeeping to attempt it. I wanted to create a simple solution that involved one single purchase containing everything a person could possibly need to delve into the hobby. Thus, I came up with a Betta Fish Starter Kit. I decided to theme it around a hybrid stylization combining old apothocary/vintage packaging and more sustainable design (Think watercolor meets Cooper Black). A lot of market research went into the project, as one of my goals was to make something that could be not only environmentally friendly, but also producable in a large volume and high quality. It was also a great opportunity to learn about how cardboard interacts with printers and how to correctly finess a laser cutter.

WORK 04 UNL Design Portal A Social Platform for UNL Design Majors Under the leadership of Professor Colleen Syron, another student and I received a UCARE research grant to develop a virtual space to tighten UNL’s student design community. We provide a place where students can learn from upperclassmen, trade techniques, engage in online critiques, and hear about upcoming events and internships in the Lincoln/Omaha area. We decided that the best delivery mechanism would be Wordpress. Along the way, I became a Wordpress master (lots and lots of customization) and picked up a decent amount of coding skills. www.unldesign.com/portal

WORK 05 Hundred Acre DMZ A Twisted Childrens Book About Social Responsibility For this project, I wanted to showcase the impact our society has on our planet. I firmly believe that the only possible way of improving our waste consumption and disposal habits is by educating our children from the start. If they grow up with proper education and have a sense of environmental responsibility instilled in them, then perhaps we can correct our current trajectory. I thought it would be an interesting approach to take a children’s book, something extremely innocent, and tarnish it. I feel like it is an accurate parallel to what we are doing with our planet. Also, because it is a children’s book, it could be a possible opportunity to educate our youth of the world. For me, this was a great opportunity to hone my illustrating skills. It was extremely challenging matching the illustration style of the original Winnie the Pooh. I also added actual photos to the illustration to invoke a sense of surrealism. This was an extremely fun project at the same time, and I feel like if I had a few extra months to work on this, I could take it to some pretty extreme lengths. In the future I want to extend it to other children’s books and create an entire series. If I could go back and change this project, I would make it a complete book and add the rest of the original book to it.
