AUG/DEC 12

Welcome We have a number of exciting new strands to our programme this season. I’ve asked an external company to curate some of our season for the first ever time and Action Hero, a Bristol company that is justly feted across several continents, have responded by programming four startling shows for us (p26). We are producing more than ever before including two brand new lunchtime shows co-produced with Òran Mór’s a Play, a Pie and a Pint scheme (p09 & p17) and a brand new Christmas show for smaller children in the Brewery, The Lost Present (p32). We are also going to co-produce with one of my favourite theatre companies in the country, New International Encounter (NIE). I saw a short version of their Hansel and Gretel last year and instantly asked them to come and create a new version of this wonderful story with us this Christmas: I’m looking forward to it enormously (p31). Alongside these we have superb companies returning to us including: Gare St Lazare’s Moby Dick (p13); our favourite opera company Opera Project with Eugene Onegin (p19); Rannel, with a brand new show 2Deep (p15) and Volcano with a classic from their canon L.O.V.E. (p25). We have new companies discovered by our scouting network including Original Theatre (p05), Bootworks (p28) and Red Dog (p21). We have theatre, film, comedy, opera, dance and family shows. New writing and classics. Workshops, classes and talks (p38-39). I hope you find lots to love this season and we look forward to seeing you here.

THREE MEN IN A BOAT

JIGSY

THE ORIGINAL THEATRE COMPANY

Jerome K Jerome’s classic novel in a brand new adaptation by Craig Gilbert and performed by the award winning Original Theatre Company. Keeping audiences laughing for well over a century Jerome K Jerome’s classic tale of boating misadventure has become the quintessential example of the charm and wit of Victorian England. Originally intended as a guide to boating on the Thames, Jerome’s ripping yarn of youthful friendship, mischief and folly celebrates the very essence of Britishness inspiring many of our comic legends from Morecambe and Wise to Monty Python. In an attempt to escape the stresses of city life three friends J, Harris and George, accompanied by their faithful canine companion Montmorency, decide to take to the river in order to relax and rejuvenate. The holiday, however, quickly unravels and descends into chaos...

In this our Diamond Jubilee and Olympic year the award winning Original Theatre Company take this classic tale of British misadventure and folly by the scruff of the neck. Equipped with a working pub, live piano accompaniment, some ale, music hall singing, a dog and a feast of physical comedy, settle yourself in for a night out to remember. “Alastair Whatley’s full blooded revival” The Times (on Our Country’s Good)

STARRING LES DENNIS jigsy productionS ltd

Written by Tony Staveacre Directed by Hannah Chissick Designed by Harriet De Winton Lighting Designed by Douglas Kuhrt

Following sell out performances in 2011, Les Dennis returns to the Tobacco Factory Theatre in Tony Staveacre’s blisteringly funny and moving play. ‘So cheerio, you’ve been a grand audience, it’s always nice to play to yer own. See you again after the bingo.’ Jigsy is a jobbing comic. Over the last 30 years he’s worked with them all – and he’ll tell you the stories to prove it. With sweat, smoke and failure clinging to his faded dinner jacket, Jigsy relives his tale: the glamour and grit of his younger days, the horror stories of when it all goes wrong, and the success he might have had. Les Dennis lays bare the highs and lows of a northern comic mining the last laughs of the working-men’s club circuit. “Gold... very funny, very warm and very thoughtful... make sure you catch it”  Whatsonstage.com “Compelling… a remarkable achievement” 9/10 Bristol Reviews Running time 1hr 10mins

ROSE

RED KETTLE THEATRE COMPANY

THE DEEP

Martin Sherman’s acclaimed play Rose tells a remarkable and sometimes harrowing tale of endurance, tolerance and spirit through its protagonist.

Directed by Iain MacDonald Designed by Halla Groves-Raines

Rose is a survivor. Her remarkable life began in a tiny Russian village, took her to Warsaw’s ghettos and, via a ship called The Exodus, to the boardwalks of Atlantic City, the Arizona canyons and salsa-flavoured nights in Miami Beach.

A young man wakes early one morning and bids farewell to his parents as he heads off for another season on the trawler boat. Once aboard the ship we meet his friends, and hear of their lives at sea together. But as they await arrival on fishing grounds, disaster strikes and all the men are then at the mercy of the sea.

Red Kettle is one of Ireland’s foremost theatre companies, with a mission to create vital, vigorous and exciting theatre, including the recently successful world première of Edna O’ Brien’s The Country Girls.

Rose

Tue 04 – Sat 15 September 8.15pm (no show Sun & Mon) Venue Brewery Theatre

Starring Fiona York and directed by Ben Hennessy, this play is a sharply drawn portrait of a feisty Jewish woman and a moving reminder of the events that shaped the last century. “Cannot fail to move you... Martin Sherman’s spectacularly well written play... Fiona York acts brilliantly... the moving stories told to the audience bring a tear to your eye and a smile to your lip” Unlimited / Three Weeks Edinburgh “Fiona York... is outstanding in a compelling production... Rose received a rapturous reception and standing ovations... the audience was spell-bound” Irish Examiner

“A skelping smashing noise and I open ma eyes and ma world is upside doon. All three hunner tones oh steel.”

Based on a true event, The Deep is directed by Iain MacDonald. Originally an Icelandic story by Jon Atli Jonasson, it tells the story of how the sea will take as readily as it gives. Here relocated to Scotland, it was translated and adapted by Graeme Maley. The Deep is a one-man show full of humanity, humour and an aching beauty that will speak to all who have ever admired the power of the sea. “His direction is invisible and his ideas are realised with clarity and integrity” The Public Reviews (on Knives In Hens, directed by Iain MacDonald) Running time 55mins Age recommendation 15+ Part of the TFT mission statement is to incentivise theatrical talent to stay in Bristol and we are proud to offer an annual Graduate Director’s Slot for an exceptional graduate from Bristol Old Vic Theatre School to direct a show in The Brewery.

THE ROOM IN THE ELEPHANT

A PLAY, A PIE AND A PINT Òran Mór and Tobacco Factory Theatre Written by Tom Wainwright

A Play, a Pie and a Pint, Glasgow’s renowned lunchtime theatre experience comes to Bristol for the very first time, with brand new plays from top playwrights. Last year in Los Angeles the graffiti artist Banksy scrawled “THIS LOOKS A BIT LIKE AN ELEPHANT” on a worthless water tank and turned it into a priceless work of art. Those in the know rose in unison to salute the artist’s latest comment on homelessness – the metaphorical ‘elephant’ in the room. An inevitable land grab followed and the water tank was taken away. But someone had been living there. For 17 years. And in a cruelly ironic twist of fate this man was now homeless. Because of Banksy. Or so the story goes. Bristol-based Tom Wainwright has written for Bristol Old Vic, Theatre Bristol, the egg and Hull Truck; previous works including Muscle and Buttercup. The show is directed by Emma Callander, whose recent work includes Supply (a Play, a Pie and a Pint), Digits (Tobacco Factory Theatre) and Truth About Youth (Travelling Light). “One of the most magical theatre initiatives of the last decade” The Scotsman (on a Play, a Pie and a Pint) Running time 45mins Bristol Beer Factory and Pieminister are delighted to support a Play, a Pie and a Pint

CASABLANCA: WHAT YOU WILL THE GIN JOINT CUT FILTER THEATRE

GILDED BALLOON & TRON THEATRE COMPANY

Casablanca: The Gin Joint Cut, written and directed by Morag Fullarton, is a lovingly disrespectful homage to one of the classic films of all time. A superb multi-tasking cast whisk you back to Morocco 1941, a Nazi infested hotbed of corruption, teeming with refugees and the flotsam and jetsam of war-torn Europe. Cut to Rick’s bar where the émigrés gather, desperate to get hold of the all-elusive exit visa, when who should walk in but the beautiful Ilsa, Rick’s long lost love... Casablanca: The Gin Joint Cut is a gem of a play, starring comic actor Gavin Mitchell – impersonating Humphrey Bogart playing Rick Blaine – alongside a brilliant cast of Clare Waugh and Jimmy Chisholm. Casablanca: The Gin Joint Cut

Set in a tiny gin joint, this fast-paced, action-packed comedy is a smart and lovingly disrespectful tribute to an all time classic film. So raise a Bogart-style eyebrow, shed a Bergman-like tear, and drown out the Nazis with a rousing chorus of the Marseillaise as you revisit one of the greatest films of all time. “Pure theatre magic... the secret of the show’s success lies in its combination of anarchic stage send-up and real passion for the essence of one of the great screen love-stories”  The Scotsman Running time 1hr 15mins Excerpts from Casablanca granted courtesy of Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. In a season where Tobacco Factory Theatre are co-producing with Óran Mór for the first time, we are delighted to present this magical show that was originally produced at a Play, a Pie and a Pint.

Moby Dick

TAKE ME WITH YOU

Gare St Lazare

Considered one of the great American STARVING ARTISTS THEATRE COMPANY novels, Herman Melville’s Moby Dick is a work of immense detail, charismatic The poignant, funny and heartbreaking story of three characters, revenge and promethean dreamers adrift in Los Angeles. challenging of the Gods.

Moby Dick

In this production by Gare St Lazare, adapted by Conor Lovett and Judy Hegarty Lovett, Captain Ahab’s ruthless pursuit of the whale Moby Dick is presented as a solo performance to a live musical accompaniment by Caoimhin O’Raghallaigh. Since its première in Ireland in 2009 it has received a fantastic reception on tours including Ireland, the South Bank Centre and festivals in the USA and Shanghai.

In search of the Californian Dream, enraged movie publicist Nikolai drives Sunset Boulevard at the very edge of the richest country in the world. Meanwhile, standing in the neon-soaked Hollywood rain, a forlorn evangelist has deserted his congregation in search of the great movie fantasies of yesteryear. And then there’s Bradley, movie make-up artist and dispenser of Tinseltown wisdom, stranded on the Hollywood Freeway...

Gare St Lazare create theatre that keeps the relationship between the audience and the actor at the very centre of each production, and were last at the Tobacco Factory Theatre with the Beckett Trilogy, one of the most unforgettable tour-de-forces seen in Bristol in recent years. We’re thrilled to welcome them back this season.

And in the midst of these dreamers and the funny and moving tales they have to tell, an extremely large and boisterous dog is bounding across the eight-lane freeway…

“Lovett’s capacity to hold an audience is remarkable. His voice control and subtle shifts of expression and movement seem effortless” The Guardian “I felt as if I should be sitting at somebody’s fireplace enjoying a storyteller tell me his story” Kate O’Toole (The View RTE TV) “Gare St Lazare players’ vision of theatre is of the ‘empty space’ variety made famous by Peter Brook... It is a theatre that exists entirely in the relationship between the audience and the actor, and this is the type of theatre that Conor Lovett – a phenomenal, almost artless, performer – was born for” Irish Theatre Magazine

The acclaimed internationally touring company Starving Artists was founded by American actor Mark Pinkosh and British writer Godfrey Hamilton. The company has won two Edinburgh Fringe Firsts, The Stage Award for Acting Excellence and the Manchester Evening News Award for Actor of the Year. Now, in collaboration with director Jonathan Best, Starving Artists present a new version of their hit show Take Me with You. “A seductive treat for everyone... vivid and extraordinary” Time Out (on Starving Artists) “Brilliantly skillful, utterly compelling” The Independent (on Starving Artists) Running time 1hr 10mins Age recommendation 14+

MR MAUGHAM AT HOME Bridging Oscar Wilde and James Bond, this is the amazing secret life of William Somerset Maugham, who wrote to 92 and his death in 1965. Fabulous wealth flowed from Maugham’s books, from Hollywood, Broadway, the West End and television. The Razors Edge, Of Human Bondage, The Painted Veil, The Letter and Rain – just a handful of his classic novels, plays and short stories. But behind popular acclaim lay tragedy. Orphaned by eight, within a lonely boyhood, his reserve, stoicism, stammer and even his sexual ambivalence found seed. After a notorious marriage and bitter divorce, he made his luxury home on the French Riviera, entertaining the great and good, royalty, prostitutes, the literati, and his one great love. Mr Maugham at Home

Adam:

Anthony Curtis, a Maugham biographer, brings the extraordinary panorama of his life to the stage; the stricken child, the student in Heidelberg, the doctor in Lambeth’s slums, the struggling writer in Paris, the stretcher-bearer on Flanders’ fields, the traveller in Gauguin’s footsteps and, incredibly, the international spy. Finally, after glittering success, the tragedy of a life ending in miserable paranoia and social opprobrium.

When I saw Christina for the first time, I felt, well, lust. I wasn’t thinking about healing or God. I was thinking about sex.

Under the direction of Chris Garner, Anthony Smee (The English Patient, C4’s The Queen) lays bare the remarkable drama of Maugham’s life and work. “Anthony Smee gives a superb performance as the worldly expatriate” The Times “Rare for a one-man performance, the evening is a theatrically satisfying whole – thanks to an almost symbiotic collaboration between writer, actor and director” The Stage

FAITH FALL

A PLAY, A PIE AND A PINT Òran Mór and Tobacco Factory Theatre Written by Frances Poet

The second lunchtime play direct from Glasgow’s a Play, a Pie and a Pint, is a dark emotional thriller from an exciting new voice, writer Frances Poet. Christina is dying. Adam knew she was dying when he met her at a faith healing where they were paired together to pray for each other. But she didn’t know that he was a reporter, attending the healing under false pretences, his faithless prayers hollow. Months on, Adam loves this woman whose body is failing, but still hasn’t told her of his deceit. He is convinced that he let the devil in that day and now the devil is following him. Frances Poet has spent over ten years working in a literary capacity for some of the UK’s foremost new writing houses. Through her previous roles as Literary Manager of the National Theatre of Scotland and Associate Director (Literary) of Hampstead Theatre before that, she has had the good fortune to commission and develop work with some of Britain’s most exciting established and emerging playwrights. This is Frances’ debut play. “Arguably the best-value cultural event in the country” Sunday Times (on a Play, a Pie and a Pint) Running time 45mins Bristol Beer Factory and Pieminister are delighted to support a Play, a Pie and a Pint

TCHAIKOVSKY’S

EUGENE ONEGIN OPERA PROJECT

Based on Pushkin’s masterpiece of Russian literature, Tchaikovsky’s great opera tells of the fated love between the innocent Tatyana and the worldweary cynic Eugene Onegin. The opera includes the famous ‘letter scene’, a tour-deforce of the soprano repertoire, in which Tatyana declares her true love for Onegin, a love that is tragically rejected. The ensuing maelstrom of emotions ends in a duel between Onegin and his best friend, the poet, Lensky, which leaves Lensky dead. Years later, at the St Petersburg Ball, Onegin, by chance, meets Tatyana once again and realises his mistake, but now the married Tatyana is unable to accept Onegin’s love. For their tenth year at the Tobacco Factory Theatre, Opera Project presents a delicious exploration of life, death, love, convention and passion with this lyrical masterpiece. The brilliant Australian baritone Grant Doyle sings the title role, Michael Bracegirdle (Cavaradossi, Tosca 2008) returns to take on Lensky and the superb Lee Bisset sings the role of Tatyana. Sung in English, with orchestra, Eugene Onegin is brought to you by Opera Project’s Richard Studer and Jonathan Lyness, the creative team behind last October’s fantastic La bohème. This promises to be an absolute highlight of the season. “Opera Project + Tobacco Factory = Heaven” Venue “One of the best small-scale opera companies in Britain” New York Times “Truly touching if not pretty damned heroic... This is a tale of pride and passion, generosity and greed, of human foibles and the society which breeds them. A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM BRISTOL OLD VIC THEATRE SCHOOL

“Something familiar, something peculiar, something for everyone: a comedy tonight!” So says the song that begins this award winning musical comedy. A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum is Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart’s bawdy tale of Pseudolus, set to the music and lyrics of the fantastic Stephen Sondheim. Pseudolus, “the lyingest, cheatingest, sloppiest slave in all of Rome” attempts to win his freedom by helping his master woo the girl next door. But in the ensuing mayhem, will he succeed? Directed by Jenny Stephens and inspired by the comedies of Plautus, this is an irreverent romp filled with slapstick humour, mistaken identities, zany characters and the infectious energy of classic vaudeville. “A show that has strong claims to being the funniest musical every written” The Guardian (on A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum) Originally produced on Broadway by Harold Prince. The BOVTS production is presented by arrangement with Josef Weinburger Ltd on behalf of Music Theatre International of New York.

L.O.V.E.

A RADICAL CLASSIC TM VOLCANo THeatre

A play concerning a farmer’s radical attempt to restore his land to its supposed former glory, and the differing reactions of his children: Or Bunnies (for short). Devon is being destroyed. The once beautiful land is blighted by non-native species, including the grey squirrel, the Chinese mitten crab, the Siberian chipmunk, the Topmouth Gudgeon and, even, the European rabbit. They are wreaking havoc. Fortunately Stamper, a local farmer, has a solution. This darkly comic new play from extraordinary young writer Kieran Lynn, mixes poignancy and satire to devastating effect. Winning a Peter Brook Empty Space Award in 2011, this production comes to Bristol following its world première at the Bike Shed Theatre in Exeter. Bunnies

Contains swearing, violence and lots of taxidermy. “The enterprising Bike Shed is keeping theatre alive in Exeter” Lyn Gardner, The Guardian “Tremendous, amusing dark comedy” What’s On Stage “Thought provoking... and very funny” Devon Life Running time 1hr 35mins (inc. interval) Age recommendation 16+

Based on Shakespeare’s sonnets, L.O.V.E. is an immoderate Shakespearean ménage à trois, with a touch of Shirley Bassey. It is about passion, spirit, beauty, jealousy, manipulation, lust. Three lovers – recalling the poet, the dark lady and the lovely boy – perform the Sonnets, bringing to the texts a vigour, passion, tenderness and desperation to match the range and depth of emotion lurking below the surface of their elegant verse. Volcano grapples with one of the greatest collections of classical poetry in English, sweeping aside dusty academic appreciation in favour of a red-blooded entanglement. The texts are alive with possibility and an athletic cast wrestles breathlessly with their language, and sweatily with one another. Bringing together Volcano’s Paul Davies and Fern Smith with DV8’s Nigel Charnock and the sumptuous design of Andrew Jones, L.O.V.E. represents a historic collaboration of some of the most distinctive pioneers of British physical theatre in the 90s. The show’s irrepressible energy, savage passion, exquisite language and arresting design make it one of Volcano’s most enduring and memorable works. “From the tender to the obscene, from the erotic to the crude, the triangle stroke, kick and kiss and convince us that love hurts” The Guardian 1993 “It is rare, as a regular theatre-goer in a western country, to see a taboo aired, broken, stamped on and thrown away in the space of a few lusty seconds” The Financial Times 2003 Running time 1hr 15mins Age recommendation 15+

With exquisite music, genuinely funny comedy, an edge of darkness that calls to mind Twelfth Night, and the disgracefully incontinent dog, Crab, The Two Gentlemen of Verona will surprise and delight. “A revelation. This early play is more than a comedy... Unmissable”  The Sunday Times (on The Comedy of Errors) www.sattf.org.uk Tickets From £12 to £22

PROTOTYPE

Experiments in theatre Tobacco Factory Theatre & Theatre Bristol

Sunday 28 October 8pm Venue Factory Theatre

Prototype is quite simply one of the most exhilarating nights out in Bristol’s theatrical calendar. Prototype audiences love theatre. They care. They want theatre to be the best it can be, and that’s why they’re the most supportive, engaged and generous champions of live performance around. They’re rewarded by being given the opportunity to be amazed on an almost obscenely regular basis by the groundswell of talent in this here city. I’m betting that if you’re not one of these people already, you definitely want to be, so here’s a step-by-step guide: 1. Watch what five artists/companies are working on right now – rough, ready, risky and quite possibly The Next Big Thing. 2. Grab a drink from the bar. 3. Head back into the auditorium to answer the artists’ questions on what you’ve just seen. 4. Return to the bar to talk some more. Simple. We’ll see you there.

In 2011, we welcomed nearly 90,000 people to over 600 performances at the Tobacco Factory and Brewery Theatres, plus 16,000 more to classes, talks, workshops and other events. To do this costs £1.5m a year. We are proud that we earn 85% of this directly, including through box office, bar sales and hire of our spaces, and that we directly spend over £900,000 on the work. 6% of our turnover comes from public funds but we need to raise 9% more, or £135,000, every year. It is the enthusiastic loyalty of our audiences and generous support from individuals, trusts, foundations and businesses that sustain the Theatres. We are grateful to them all. Please consider becoming a Fan or Fanbassador today and benefit from regular communication from the theatre, advance booking periods, special offers and the knowledge that you are helping to support a vital part of our cultural landscape. Business Club members and fans who join by Direct Debit can get 2 for 1 tickets on certain dates (see calendar) to shows with this symbol. 40 Box Office 0117 902 0344
