Welcome We have a number of exciting new strands to our programme this season. I’ve asked an external company to curate some of our season for the first ever time and Action Hero, a Bristol company that is justly feted across several continents, have responded by programming four startling shows for us (p26). We are producing more than ever before including two brand new lunchtime shows co-produced with Òran Mór’s a Play, a Pie and a Pint scheme (p09 & p17) and a brand new Christmas show for smaller children in the Brewery, The Lost Present (p32). We are also going to co-produce with one of my favourite theatre companies in the country, New International Encounter (NIE). I saw a short version of their Hansel and Gretel last year and instantly asked them to come and create a new version of this wonderful story with us this Christmas: I’m looking forward to it enormously (p31). Alongside these we have superb companies returning to us including: Gare St Lazare’s Moby Dick (p13); our favourite opera company Opera Project with Eugene Onegin (p19); Rannel, with a brand new show 2Deep (p15) and Volcano with a classic from their canon L.O.V.E. (p25). We have new companies discovered by our scouting network including Original Theatre (p05), Bootworks (p28) and Red Dog (p21). We have theatre, film, comedy, opera, dance and family shows. New writing and classics. Workshops, classes and talks (p38-39). I hope you find lots to love this season and we look forward to seeing you here.

Bus numbers 25 or 24 from North Bristol, Broadmead, the City Centre and Redcliffe Hill stop outside the Tobacco Factory. Currently the last bus leaves at 10.42pm Monday – Sunday from outside Aldi.

Rose is a survivor. Her remarkable life began in a tiny Russian village, took her to Warsaw’s ghettos and, via a ship called The Exodus, to the boardwalks of Atlantic City, the Arizona canyons and salsa-flavoured nights in Miami Beach.
A young man wakes early one morning and bids farewell to his parents as he heads off for another season on the trawler boat. Once aboard the ship we meet his friends, and hear of their lives at sea together. But as they await arrival on fishing grounds, disaster strikes and all the men are then at the mercy of the sea.
Red Kettle is one of Ireland’s foremost theatre companies, with a mission to create vital, vigorous and exciting theatre, including the recently successful world première of Edna O’ Brien’s The Country Girls.

Based on a true event, The Deep is directed by Iain MacDonald. Originally an Icelandic story by Jon Atli Jonasson, it tells the story of how the sea will take as readily as it gives. Here relocated to Scotland, it was translated and adapted by Graeme Maley. Epic harmony, live sampling, electric guitars, crunky banjos, double bass and hypnotic drums create a vivid landscape on which this twisted tale is told. Dom Coyote (Kneehigh Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company) is joined by award winning song writer Emily Barker (BAFTA), Nat Butler and Adrian Acolatse (Rhythm section for Mercury Prize Winner Speech Debelle). A Play, a Pie and a Pint, Glasgow’s renowned lunchtime theatre experience comes to Bristol for the very first time, with brand new plays from top playwrights. Last year in Los Angeles the graffiti artist Banksy scrawled “THIS LOOKS A BIT LIKE AN ELEPHANT” on a worthless water tank and turned it into a priceless work of art. Those in the know rose in unison to salute the artist’s latest comment on homelessness – the metaphorical ‘elephant’ in the room. An inevitable land grab followed and the water tank was taken away. But someone had been living there. For 17 years. And in a cruelly ironic twist of fate this man was now homeless. Because of Banksy. Or so the story goes. Bristol-based Tom Wainwright has written for Bristol Old Vic, Theatre Bristol, the egg and Hull Truck; previous works including Muscle and Buttercup. MR MAUGHAM AT HOME Bridging Oscar Wilde and James Bond, this is the amazing secret life of William Somerset Maugham, who wrote to 92 and his death in 1965. Fabulous wealth flowed from Maugham’s books, from Hollywood, Broadway, the West End and television. The Razors Edge, Of Human Bondage, The Painted Veil, The Letter and Rain – just a handful of his classic novels, plays and short stories. But behind popular acclaim lay tragedy. Orphaned by eight, within a lonely boyhood, his reserve, stoicism, stammer and even his sexual ambivalence found seed. After a notorious marriage and bitter divorce, he made his luxury home on the French Riviera, entertaining the great and good, royalty, prostitutes, the literati, and his one great love. EUGENE ONEGIN OPERA PROJECT
Based on Pushkin’s masterpiece of Russian literature, Tchaikovsky’s great opera tells of the fated love between the innocent Tatyana and the worldweary cynic Eugene Onegin. The opera includes the famous ‘letter scene’, a tour-deforce of the soprano repertoire, in which Tatyana declares her true love for Onegin, a love that is tragically rejected. The ensuing maelstrom of emotions ends in a duel between Onegin and his best friend, the poet, Lensky, which leaves Lensky dead. Years later, at the St Petersburg Ball, Onegin, by chance, meets Tatyana once again and realises his mistake, but now the married Tatyana is unable to accept Onegin’s love. For their tenth year at the Tobacco Factory Theatre, Opera Project presents a delicious exploration of life, death, love, convention and passion with this lyrical masterpiece. The brilliant Australian baritone Grant Doyle sings the title role, Michael Bracegirdle (Cavaradossi, Tosca 2008) returns to take on Lensky and the superb Lee Bisset sings the role of Tatyana. MoE returns to the TFT with a reworking of their hit show Yes, We Have No Bananas, part of their highly successful wartime trilogy. Based on oral histories collected from those who lived in Bristol, Somerset and Dorset during the war, the action takes place in a grocery shop in Weymouth during the lead up to D-Day. In true MOE fashion, into the shop come a variety of customers, from the indomitable Mrs Fricker to the Yank who will eventually win the heart of Doreen, the shopkeeper’s daughter.

Opening Hours 10am – 6.30pm Monday to Saturday (exc. Public holidays) On days when performances are scheduled, the Box Office will be open until the start of the performance. If there is a show scheduled on a Sunday or during public holidays, the Box Office will be open for 2 hours prior to the performance.
Payment
We accept all major credit and debit cards except American Express. A booking fee of 50p for 1 ticket or £1 for 2 or more tickets applies to all card transactions. We cannot offer refunds, but tickets can be exchanged for another performance of the same production up to 48 hours before the show (subject to availability). An administration charge of £1 applies. Please do be aware that a booking fee of £2.50 per transaction will be charged for online bookings. Bookings made direct with the Theatre either in person or by phone do not incur a fee other than the card-handling fee described above.

Concessions may be available for children (16 and under), over 60’s, registered disabled, equity members, students and benefit claimants. Concessions are available at the discretion of the visiting company, so may not be available for all productions. When collecting concessionary tickets, proof of concession must be provided.

The Tobacco Factory and Brewery Theatre are regularly hired for daytime or evening events and provide a lovely alternative space for parties, meetings and conferences. Using our beautiful auditorium, private foyer or break-out
