WELCOME
THEATRE STAFF Theatre Manager David Dewhurst
This season is always structured around three mighty planks – our Christmas show and two productions from Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory (SATTF). This Christmas we’ve assembled a fantastic cast and crew to create a Cinderella that I’m sure will be talked about for many years to come. It is twelve years since Lear has been seen in Bristol and for SATTF to return to one of the greatest plays of all time is a glorious prospect. They also bring us The Cherry Orchard, their third excursion into Chekhov, following a legendary Three Sisters here in 2005 and a wonderful Uncle Vanya at Bristol Old Vic. It’s not just about these three though and I am thrilled to present such a strong programme in both spaces. As well as top-drawer comedy in the Factory Theatre we present a timely adaptation of a classic, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, alongside one of Bristol’s favourite visiting companies, Little Bulb; anyone who has seen them before will be racing to The Marvellous and Unlikely Fête of Little and Upper Downing. The Brewery programme is the strongest it has ever been. Alongside some of Bristol’s best companies we are presenting Blind Summit, Third Angel, mala voadora, Paines Plough, Show and Tell and Idle Motion. It’s an absolutely stellar season and I really hope we see you down here often.
This season, some Brewery show opening night tickets are £5! See show pages for details and get booking. The majority of our shows fall under the Theatre category, covering everything from classical productions to new writing; puppetry to devised and physical shows. We present work in both our theatre spaces, so check the venue name to see where the shows are playing.
As well as our brilliant Christmas shows – Cinderella: A Fairytale (p04-05) and Bath Time (p07) we’ve got a whole selection of family shows for big and small people aged from two up. PLUS we now do children’s parties – see page 22 for details.
Year in, year out we are proud to present excellent comedy line-ups and many continue to come back to the TFT even when they can fill out stadiums because they just love it here! Book early – many comedians often sell out well before they play.

CINDERELLA: A FAIRYTALE CHRISTMAS 2011
TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRE AND TRAVELLING LIGHT Director Sally Cookson Designer Katie Sykes Musical Direction Benji Bower Dramaturg Adam Peck
We join forces once again with the brilliant Travelling Light for a Christmas delight for all the family. The creative team behind Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves and Bristol Old Vic’s Treasure Island bring you a brand new version of one of the oldest, best loved fairytales of all time. When a rich man’s wife dies, his daughter Ella mourns her beloved mother with a grief as deep as the snow on her grave. Before the spring sun has time to melt it, her father takes a second wife and their peaceful life is taken over by a host of new and unpleasant relations. Her only friends are the woodland birds who roost in the tree that grows over the grave, but they are no ordinary birds... With their quirky visual style, crystal-clear storytelling, original live music and pitch-perfect ensemble acting, director Sally Cookson and team bring this classic tale of fortunes reversed startlingly and imaginatively to life. “The Factory’s Christmas shows are a firmly established and rightly-loved Bristol institution” Venue “A terrific family night out that will have everyone leaving the theatre with a spring in their step” **** The Guardian (on Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves) “Cookson has created a Treasure Island that grabs you by the doubloons and carries you along on an unashamedly swashbuckling adventure” **** The Independent (on Bristol Old Vic’s Treasure Island) Age recommendation 6+ Running time 2hrs (including interval)

HENRY VIII & THE ROYAL WEDDING PLANNER
THE MARVELLOUS AND UNLIKELY FETE OF LITTLE UPPER DOWNING
The true story of the Tudors – through the eyes of Henry’s wives.
After the sell-out success of Crocosmia and Operation Greenfield Little Bulb, one of the UK’s most exciting theatre companies for years, return with a season highlight and a traditional English fête.
JULIA GWYNNE & ANDY BURDEN
The story of the greatest of royal weddings – all six of them. Henry VIII caused a constitutional crisis because of his serial marriage disorder, caused misery to five of his wives, but created a celebrity out of his wedding planner. This stunning new historical performance takes a hilarious, dramatic and touching journey through the lives of Henry’s jilted brides, from the eyes of longstanding lady in waiting, Jane Parker. Jane marries Anne Boylen’s ill-fated brother and becomes Jane Boylen, Lady Rochfort, building an intimate knowledge of the tos and fros of the royal bedchamber. With each wife brilliantly portrayed, Jane tells us the real story of the Tudors, all performed brilliantly by Julia Gwynne under the direction of Andy Burden (The Adventures of Pinocchio). This stunning new historical performance takes a hilarious, dramatic and touching journey through the lives of Henry’s jilted brides, all performed brilliantly by Julia Gwynne under the direction of Andy Burden. “A small masterpiece... a brilliantly witty, constantly absorbing and increasingly emotional portrait of a woman seated at the top table during one of England’s most gripping and turbulent times” ***** Venue
LITTLE BULB THEATRE
The Little Upper Downing Folk Society is in town and as well as wanting to share some cracking tunes, there’s a severe hole in the history curriculum that desperately needs to be rectified. As if it wasn’t bad enough that most people haven’t even heard of Little Upper Downing, no one even seems to realise that it was home to the greatest folk duo of all time! Fear not though, as Seth, Peter, Charlotte and Mary have brought just enough props and passion to tell you the tale of the villages’ two unlikely heroes, Derek Badger and Christopher Roaring, both on a journey of self discovery through fog, friendship, folk music, and the odd ribbon dance. “An all-singing, all-playing cast work their socks off, display genuine musicianship and invest every single second with total sincerity... One of theatre’s most cherishable young companies” The Guardian Running time 2hrs

Take a seat in the Belleville Rendez-vous, a 1950s cabaret bar and witness the fantastical and touching story of orphaned cycling fanatic, Champion, his grandmother and their corpulent dog, Bruno. Inspired by the film, Belleville Rendez-vous tells the charming tale of Madame Souza’s fight to rescue Champion from the mysterious crooks that kidnapped him during the Tour de France. Joining forces with the ageing jazz trop Les Triplettes de Belleville, they hatch an ambitious plan to rescue him from his seeming state of peril. Spanning countryside to metropolis, FellSwoop’s original stage adaptation uses puppetry, physical theatre, live jazz and bespoke sound effects to tell this touching comedy that has enthralled audiences around the world. THE RAGGED TROUSERED PHILANTHROPISTS TOWNSEND PRODUCTIONS
This adaptation of Robert Tressell’s famous novel is a hilarious fast-paced show that shares with its audience a year in the life of a group of painters and decorators, as they renovate a threestorey town house for Mayor Sweater. It traces their struggle for survival in a complacent and stagnating Edwardian England. These workers are the “philanthropists” who throw themselves into back-breaking work for poverty wages in order to generate profit for their masters. This vibrant, lively story is brought to life by two hugely talented and experienced performers using comedy routines, entertaining songs and live music from the Music Hall and uplifting hymns from the Chapel sung in graceful harmony. This not to be missed story is brought to life using live music, mayhem and mirth. This production has been made possible by the excellent support and sponsorship from the TUC and many individual Trade Unions. “...a finely-paced production which packs plenty of food for thought into an entertaining and accessible evening” WhatsonStage Running time 1hr 45mins

KING LEAR
THE CHERRY ORCHARD
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE SHAKESPEARE AT THE TOBACCO FACTORY
One of the pinnacles of world drama, and Shakespeare’s greatest masterpiece, King Lear is the most complete account we have of what it is – and what it is not – to be human. The play launched Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory on an unsuspecting world in February 2000; the company is delighted to offer this new production to a much larger audience in 2012. John Shrapnel plays King Lear. “Andrew Hilton’s commanding production... is once again a revelation” The Guardian (on 2011’s Richard II) “One of the finest productions of Shakespeare – or any other playwright for that matter – seen in Bristol in years” The Independent (on the 2000 production of King Lear)

ANTON CHEKHOV
SHAKESPEARE AT THE TOBACCO FACTORY Translated by Stephen Mulrine
In his final tragi-comic masterpiece Chekhov portrays an aristocratic family bewildered and impotent in the face of financial bankruptcy and the huge social changes sweeping Russia in the early years of the twentieth century. This will be Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory’s third excursion into Chekhov, following its 2005 Three Sisters, and the 2009 SATTF/Bristol Old Vic co-prodution of Uncle Vanya. Julia Hills plays Ranevskaya. “A marvellous blend of heartache and hilarity… This truly is the most wonderful production” The Times (on Uncle Vanya) “I don’t think that I’ve ever seen a Three Sisters that is quite as funny, quite so gloriously human” The Guardian Keep in touch with SATTF: Facebook: Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory Twitter: @ShakespeareatTF www.sattf.org.uk

THE TABLE BLIND SUMMIT THEATRE
WHAT I HEARD ABOUT THE WORLD
A visual romp through French New Wave style and puppet existentialism.
A theatre piece with two songs: one original, one karaoke.
Following a sell-out run at the Bristol Festival of Puppetry, puppet innovators Blind Summit Theatre return with their award-winning, brand new adult puppetry show.
There’s a place where you confess your sins to voicemail.
Join them on a visual journey that takes in a ballet of disembodied heads, a story told entirely by pictures emerging from a briefcase and a tiny Moses with a cardboard head full of lonely wisdom. Told with beautiful puppets and Blind Summit’s trademark performing style this story combines dark humour and flat-pack technology. No man is an island... but sometimes a puppet can be a table. The company that created the puppetry in Anthony Minghella’s award-winning Madam Butterfly, Simon McBurney’s A Dog’s Heart, Complicite’s Shunkin, as well as their own genre-breaking productions including 1984 at BAC, return to their Low Life roots as the “front men of rock’n’roll puppetry” (Time Out) in a brand-new show about a puppet stuck on a table. “Absolutely sublime, the best thing this excellent company has ever done” Time Out “Astonishingly accomplished puppetry from the excellent Blind Summit” **** The Telegraph Running time 1hr 10mins www.blindsummit.com
THIRD ANGEL AND MALA VOADORA

There’s a place where, if the army send your Dad overseas, they give you a life-size cut-out version to keep you company. Join Third Angel and mala voadora as they attempt to describe the world. As they try to hold an accurate picture of the whole world in their heads. A world that seems to get bigger by the day. How on earth can you know all the places you’ve been, let alone the places you haven’t? “The great thing about Third Angel is you never know what you’re going to get... heavenly work” The Guardian Running time 1hr 10mins Age recommendation 16+

JOHN PEEL’S SHED A PLEASING TERROR SHOW AND TELL
Direct from a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Festival 2011, comes John Osborne’s debut storytelling hour. As broadcast on BBC Radio 4 last December.
In 2002, John Osborne won a competition on John Peel’s Radio 1 show. His prize was a box of records that took 8 years to listen to. This is an ode to radio, those records and anyone who’s ever sought solace in wireless. Inspired by Osborne’s acclaimed book Radio Head (BBC Radio 4’s Book of The Week) and script edited by Joe Dunthorne (writer of Submarine). “Osborne sits somewhere between Tom Wrigglesworth and Daniel Kitson, which is a very good place to sit. I could have listened for hours” ***** The Independent

In Canon Alberic’s Scrap-book, a young Cambridge antiquary discovers the devil in the details of an old book in a medieval town in the French Pyrenees… In The Mezzotint a ghoulish revenge is enacted within a work of art, before the helpless eyes of a museum curator in Oxford... “Wonderful, magical storytelling” ***** The Daily Mail
“Beautifully-written, funny and poignant... Just as John Peel’s records changed his life this lovely, simple, beautifully executed show has enriched ours” ***** The Scotsman

SCRIPT SPACE V NEW WRITING CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Back for a fifth year running, Script Space is an open competition that invites submissions of new, unperformed one-act plays from UK-based writers for tailor-made development opportunities. It’s very simple, really: we’re looking for exciting writing from exciting writers whom we’d like to work with further. We will select up to three plays to take forward for development. What form that development takes will depend on the plays themselves; it’ll be bespoke, to ensure maximum benefit to the writing and the writer. Previous development work has included: dramaturgical advice, R&D time with actors and a director, a rehearsed reading or small-scale production. Submission guidelines We’d much rather receive your play by email. Please send a single Word or PDF attachment (no CVs or synopses, please) to scriptspace@tobaccofactory.com, putting the play title in the subject box. NB Entries will be judged anonymously, so please don’t include your name on the play itself. We anticipate a high volume of submissions, so do bear with us.

We are extremely grateful for this assistance and would love to welcome you into our wonderful community of friends.
