THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta

Terminal Connections Q: In a couple of earlier articles you mentioned attaching or tightening wires around their “terminals.” What are terminals, and how do I attach a wire to one? -- Gerry P., Huntsville, Ala. A: A “terminal,” in the parlance of minor electrical repair, is a common term for the position in an electrical device where a connection is made or broken. In short, it’s where you hook the wires up. A terminal in a small electrical item, such as a lamp or a receptacle, is generally a common screw -- you’ll typically see two terminals (screws) side by side. To connect a wire to a terminal, the insulation around the tip of the wire is stripped away (so that the bare wire will contact the terminal, completing the connection). The wire is then bent around the terminal, underneath the screw head, and the screw is tightened just enough to hold the wire snugly. Connecting the wire to the terminal properly is essential to make sure a receptacle works. Wire that is nicked and scratched or that is loosely connected to the terminal can interfere with the flow of electric current (meaning the receptacle won’t work right). Bare wire extending past a screw terminal can cause a short circuit if it touches another metal part. Fixing these problems can be as simple as ensuring a clean, snug connection to the terminal. To do this, always turn off power to the circuit and test, using a circuit tester, to make sure no current is reaching the unit. Then, access the connector area of the unit (in a low-voltage thermostat, that’s behind the control dial; in a wall receptacle, unscrew the receptacle and tug out from its metal box). Locate the terminal screws and inspect the wire ends for damage. Scratched wire can be clipped away; strip a segment of wire behind it and reattach to the terminal. Make sure the bare wire wraps completely around the terminal. The start of the plastic insulation should barely touch the screw head, and no bare wire should jut out from the terminal. HOME TIP: A circuit tester is an essential part of a home electrical kit; always use it prior to starting any electrical work. Send questions or home-repair tips to homeguru2000@hotmail.com, or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. TRY THIS AT HOME (continued): four-inch length of string and tape the center of it to the inside of a jar lid. Then screw the lid onto the empty jar so that the ends of the string are suspended inside. Now go outside and focus the rays of the Sun onto the string with a magnifying glass. Within a few minutes, the intensified heat will burn through the string. • You can also use a string to pick up an ice cube, without touching the ice. Place the ice cube on a flat surface, and then sprinkle some table salt on top of it. Take a length of string and lay it across the top of the ice cube. Wait three to five minutes. The salt will lower the freezing point of the ice and slightly melt the surface, which will saturate the string. After a few minutes, the ice will re-freeze with the string embedded in it, and you’ll be able to lift it by picking up the string. • If you need to drip some non-toxic liquid but can’t find a medicine dropper, a drinking straw will work. Carefully suck up the liquid into the straw, then quickly remove it from your mouth and cover the open top of the straw with your finger. The liquid will remain vacuumed up inside the straw until you lift your finger. With a little bit of practice, you can learn how far (and how quickly) to lift your finger in order to dispense the liquid a single drop at a time. • Lemon juice can be used as invisible ink. Just pour some lemon juice into a small saucer. Add a few drops of water and mix well. Now dip a cotton swab into the mixture and use it as a “pen” to write a message on a plain white piece of paper. Let the page dry. Your writing will be invisible until you heat it (try holding it close to a light bulb). Citrus fruit juices contain carbon compounds which break down when exposed to heat. • You can build a tiny “motorboat” that won’t require batteries. Take a piece of aluminum foil and fashion a boat shape out of it. Slice a small piece off of a bar of soap, cut a small notch in it, and affix it to the back of your boat. Make sure the piece of soap touches the water once you’ve mounted it as an “outboard engine.” Now place your craft in a sink or tub full of water and watch it cruise! The soap disrupts the surface tension of the water, propelling the boat forward. • Got a yen to get back to your pioneer roots? Try making your own bricks! First, place some ground clay (not modeling clay) into a bucket. Add some straw and enough water to turn the stuff into a doughy mixture. Then, place portions of the mixture into molds of some sort – cardboard juice boxes

PAWS CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

When Wildlife Gets Too Close DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My neighbor “Gladys” will put out food for any wild creature that happens by her back porch. I’m not talking about a few songbirds: She is putting out food for raccoons and squirrels, has a big block of salt in the back corner of her yard for deer, and who knows what else. I think this is dangerous because it makes these animals come into her neighbors’ yards looking for food, and they might hurt our pets or our kids! Should I report her to someone, like animal control? -- Anonymous but Annoyed DEAR ANONYMOUS: Here’s a question: Have you talked to Gladys about your concerns? I know the political maelstrom that is modern suburbia tends to preclude this seemingly obvious step, but it is important to find out if Gladys even realizes that her actions could have negative consequences. And by talking to her, I don’t mean standing in her line of sight while she’s outside and yelling “Nyah nyah, I’m telling on you!” Save that for those tension-filled summer evenings after she blames you for the homeowners’ association letter asking her to stop -- but wait, I’m getting ahead of myself. First you have to ask her nicely. It’s the neighborly thing to do. Then you bring it up at the next HOA meeting. If the community agrees with you, a letter can be issued to Gladys by the homeowners’ association. Contacting animal control -- if there is no immediate danger -- should be done only if Gladys does not respond to yours or the HOA’s requests. The department may issue a civil infraction (punishable by a fine) if they receive enough complaints. Animal control should always be called if there is an imminent threat by an animal, or if a pet or wild animal is in immediate need of assistance. Send your tips, questions and comments to Paws Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or e-mail them to pawscorner@hotmail.com. (509) 283-7030 TRY THIS AT HOME (continued): work well – and let them sit overnight in a warm place. Then, gently tear away the molds and let the bricks dry in the sun for several days. Voila! • Eggshells are surprisingly strong, and here’s how to prove it. Take the half-shells of two cracked eggs. Wrap some masking tape around the middle of each and then use scissors to trim the excess shell below the tape line so that the edges are even. (You’ll end up with four little bowl-shaped shell halves.) Then lay the shells out (flat side down) in a square. They should be able to hold up something moderately heavy – like a coffee can. • Here’s a practical way to demonstrate centrifugal force. Take a plastic clothes hanger and loop it over your index finger. Using your other hand, balance a coin on the bottom of the hanger, directly under your supporting finger. Once the coin is balanced, swing the hanger gently back and forth on your finger. You can eventually increase the swing so that the hanger circles all the way around your finger. The coin should stay in place as long as you keep the hanger spinning. • Can you blow up a balloon without using any lung power? Sure you can. Pour one ounce of water into an empty soft drink bottle and add one teaspoon of baking soda. Stir the mixture with a soda straw until the baking soda has dissolved. Keep your balloon handy as you pour one tablespoon of lemon juice into the bottle; now quickly fit the balloon over the mouth of the bottle. The carbon dioxide that forms should inflate the balloon. • Make your own musical instrument with an empty soda bottle and a straw. Pour water into the bottle until it’s about three-quarters full. Insert the straw into the bottle as though you were going to take a sip. Now blow across the top of the straw until you hear a sound. You can even raise and lower the bottle as you blow to make different tones! • If you try any of these experiments, ensure that you have the correct materials and containers before you begin. And use common sense when handling items that could potentially prove hazardous. Scissors can cut, lemon juice can burn the eyes, and drinking straws can be ingested if you draw too hard. (Yes, it’s happened before.) Just stay alert and have fun!

Guard Against Medicare Fraud Starting in November, we’ll have a month or so to make changes in our Medicare Part D drug plans, if we wish to do so. It’s not too early to investigate various plans and ask some initial questions, such as: • Are my drugs covered under the plan? • Is there a Medigap, the period of time where there is no drug coverage? • What does the plan cost per month, and what are the deductible and copayment amounts? A good first stop to compare plans is the Medicare site online: www.medicare.gov. As can be expected, thieves have figured out ways to commit fraud with Medicare. Here are some things we need to know: • It’s illegal for drug-plan companies to call you on the phone to offer drug plans. You must be the one who makes the call. • If someone claims to be from Medicare and wants to give you free services, what they really want is your Medicare number

for their fraud. Guard your number like gold, and don’t give it out to anyone. • No one is allowed to visit your home to sell you a plan unless you’ve invited them. • Plan representatives cannot ask for payment over the phone. They must send a bill. • Literature about plans cannot claim to be endorsed by Medicare, because Medicare does not endorse one plan over another. • If someone intimidates you and suggests that you must sign up with a certain plan, call the police. The plan you select is completely your choice. If you suspect that someone is trying to use you to commit Medicare fraud, report it to the Inspector General’s fraud hotline at 1-800-447-8477 or call Medicare at 1-800-633-4227.

A Shot for PTSD?

At some point in the future, a veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder may be able to walk into a clinic, get a shot and walk out feeling much less anxiety. A second or third “booster” shot might be needed months down the road -- or maybe not. There’s a new procedure called a stellate ganglion block, which is an injection of the same anesthesia that’s used for women during childbirth. In layman’s terms, it works like this: In PTSD, nerve growth factor (NGF) is produced after the initial trauma. NGF then gets carried through the brain to a “junction” where it causes even more nerves to sprout and the brain to become overactive. With the injection of the anesthesia into a certain spot in the neck, the sprouting of additional nerves is halted. It’s thought that the procedure returns the brain to the pre-trauma state. And it happens immediately. That’s not to say this is as simple as getting a flu shot in the arm and going on your way. It’s a medical procedure. As such, it involves hooking up to monitors, a couple of painkiller injections at the site, and sterile draping. While the patient isn’t put completely out, he is given a twilight-type drug such as Versed. Sounds good, doesn’t it? While the procedure has been carried out only a few times, the initial results are promising. All that’s needed now is for funding to be found so that the clinical trials can begin -- and then, hopefully, the treatment will be one that’s routinely used. For more information (especially if you want all the medical lingo and diagrams), go to www.stopptsdnow.com. Write to Freddy Groves in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Roseola Is Common Childhood Infection DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I live in the far north, where deep snow stays until late spring. This past winter my 16-month-old son came down with a rash. We were snowed in and I couldn’t get to the doctor, but I talked with him on the phone. The doctor said it was probably roseola, a herpes infection. The baby was never very sick, but I wonder if this roseola can cause future trouble. Can it? What’s the herpes connection? -- A.S. ANSWER: Let’s get the herpes issue out of the way right at the start. The virus causing roseola is the herpes-6 virus, not the virus of genital infections -herpes-2 -- or the virus of cold sores -- herpes-1. It’s a common childhood infection. By the third year of life, 2 years of age, 80 percent of infants have been infected with it. A sudden rise of temperature -- 103 F (39 C) or higher -- heralds the onset of the illness. Even in the face of this high temperature, most babies don’t look or act sick. The fever lasts three to five days and then goes as quickly as it came. Within 12 to 24 hours of the fever’s disappearance, the baby breaks out in a rash that is light red (rose-colored, the basis of the “roseola” name) and appears on the trunk. It spreads to the face, the upper arms and the upper legs. In one to three days, the rash leaves. Almost all children recover quickly. There are no future consequences from the usual roseola infection. No treatment is given, because no treatment is needed. However, children who have a defect in

their immune system benefit from antiviral therapy. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have had type 2 diabetes for more than 10 years. I can control it by watching what I eat. When I was first diagnosed, I was overweight, and I lost 50 pounds. I have several friends who also have type 2 diabetes, and they are on medicine for it. They say that by taking medicine, they don’t have to watch what they eat. Is this true?

ANSWER: The best way to control any illness is to treat it without medicine whenever possible. All medicines have side effects. Diet is an important aspect of diabetes control. Since weight loss and a diabetic diet have kept your blood sugar in check, stick with them. Only if diet and weight loss cannot bring blood sugar to acceptable levels should a person have to resort to medicine. In point of fact, that happens often enough. Your friends don’t have free rein to eat whatever they want. They need to speak with a dietitian about a diabetic diet. Diabetes is becoming an epidemic disease. The booklet on this illness discusses its many facets and its treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 402W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Marcos Ambrose Is the “Real Deal” Q: Greg, I really enjoyed the weekend, as one of my favorite NASCAR drivers, Marcos Ambrose, won at Watkins Glen on Saturday in the Nationwide race and then drove the Wood Brothers Ford to an excellent third-place finish on Sunday in the Sprint Cup race. It couldn’t happen to a nicer fellow. -- K.L., Michigan A: I agree, K.L., and with his sterling performance, things might be turning around for both Marcos and the Wood Brothers, as the team’s spectacular finish Sunday couldn’t have come at a better time in the Sprint Cup division. Behind the wheel of the Wood Brothers Racing “Little Debbie” Ford Fusion, Ambrose’s practice times were at the top of the chart during Watkins Glen practice sessions on Friday, but the official Sprint Cup qualifying was rained out. Thankfully, the Woods received the last and 43rd starting spot based on owner points. On Saturday, Ambrose posted his first-ever NASCAR win with a victory in the Zippo 200 at the Glen’s tough road course in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Ambrose thus becomes the first Australian to earn a NASCAR victory, and his historic feat on the 2.45-mile road course lifts him into

the top 10 in the NASCAR Nationwide Series standings. Then on Sunday, Ambrose proved he was “for real” (everyone already knows this who follows NASCAR), as the popular Aussie drove his Ford from “down under” last place to third when the checkered flag fell in a brilliant drive. Since leaving Australia to pursue a career in NASCAR, Ambrose has made 83 NASCAR starts: 22 in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, 59 in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and two in the top-flight NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Saturday’s win came in a Ford Fusion backed by STP and Kingsford, and owned by JTG/ Brad Daugherty Racing. In 2009, Ambrose will race full-time in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for the JTG/Daugherty team. The Nationwide win at the Glen in New York was the first since Daugherty, a former NBA star and television racing analyst, bought into the team. Look for big things to come in the future from Ambrose and JTG Daugherty, and a return to form for the Wood Brothers, too. *** Q: I’m really starting to enjoy the IRL races again now that more than 17 cars start a race. Do you favor ovals or road courses? -- Larry C., New Jersey

in tandem with the USAC Silver Crown, Sprint and Midget Series in determining champions. However, the failure of USAC’s Indy Car division late in 1978 brought about the formation of CART, and before you knew it, USAC was out and CART was in. CART road races later became routine along with ovals on the CART schedule. I’d say leave everything alone right now, as ovals and road courses are neat in this day and age of Indy Cars.

A: Larry, I personally love the ovals, but know of the importance of the road courses in attracting drivers, teams and sponsors to this class of racing. Back in the old days, virtually all USAC Indy Car races were held on ovals and worked
