This episode also featured the Andy Kaufman Mighty Mouse sketch. • Desi Arnaz was the first person to act as host and appear as musical guest in the same episode back in 1976. • John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd left the show at the same time and both appeared on their final episode together on May 26, 1979. • There was no host for SNL the night of their 100th episode. • Queen gave their first and only American television performance on Saturday Night Live! in 1982. • Former cast member Dan Aykroyd has two unique traits. Despite the somber mood, everyone strove to end the opening on a lighter note. Lorne Michaels turned to Mayor Guiliani and asked, “Can we be funny?” to which Guiliani responded, “Why start now?” • Senator John McCain was the first sitting U.S. Senator to host SNL back in 2002. • Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen missed their senior prom for the chance to host SNL in 2004. They are the only twins to have hosted the show. • British Actor Hugh Laurie hosted back in October of 2006, with special guest appearance from fellow Brit, Sacha Baron Cohen – best known as Borat. Reports later appeared that Laurie and Cohen had gone out together while in New York and interacted with people in character, ultimately ending up in an altercation when Cohen insulted a man as Borat. Dear Dave, We’ve been following your plan, and it’s been a real blessing to us. Last week, my mother-in-law told my husband that they haven’t paid their property taxes yet $3,000 was due in January. I love my in-laws, but they’re big spenders. They’ve got plenty of money and love to take lots of trips. We make good money, too, and could help them out, but we’re afraid this may be just the tip of the iceberg. What’s your advice on handling this? Kelly Dear Kelly, This is a really touchy situation. First of all, you shouldn’t do anything. Your husband needs to handle this, because he’s their son. Even if you make kind, polite suggestions, they’ll assume you’re the one withholding from them. You don’t want to be labeled as the evil daughterin-law! I understand your position and agree that you don’t want to enable their bad habits. Giving a drunk a drink is never a good idea. But this is family we’re talking about. You should try to find a way to help them if you can. If that help includes money, make certain you know exactly where it goes. When you give someone $3,000 (the amount needed for the taxes) you earn the right to have a say in what’s happening. Maybe your husband could go have coffee with them and just talk about things. He could explain how you guys are getting out of debt, and living on a budget to get control of your money. He could tell them how it’s been a fabulous thing for your marriage and your
(safe from foreclosure) Dear Dave, We’re going to be renting a house while we save up to build our dream home. How can we make sure the house is safe from foreclosure? Andy Dear Andy, A smart owner of rental property asks questions and does some research to find out if you’re what he wants as a tenant. You can do the same thing! Ask up front about the situation and about their financial stability. Let them know you’d like some assurance for you and your family that they’re not a foreclosure risk. You also want to be sure your lease allows you to stay in the house if there’s a foreclosure. Check with a lawyer to see if this will help in your state. If the house is worth lots of money, or it’s already paid for, chances are you’ll be fine. If he’s unwilling to talk about this, or he tells you he got into real estate after seeing how profitable it could be during a late-night infomercial, you’ll probably be a foreclosure victim! - Dave * For more great financial advice, please visit www.davesays.org.

finances, and that he’d love to show them how you’re doing it. I’ve got a feeling that mom and dad didn’t raise their son to have dessert first and then eat his vegetables, but that’s exactly what they are doing. They need to pay their property taxes before they go running off on a bunch of fancy trips. From what you said, they’ve got the money to take care of what needs to be done and have some fun, but if they don’t correct their course, they’re liable to have their financial dignity stripped from them. As long as your husband explains things gently, lays out the boundaries in a loving and diplomatic way, yet remains firmly determined not to make things worse by enabling them, I think everything will be alright. - Dave

Living Will Versus DNR Orders Do you know the differences between a living will and a Do Not Resuscitate order? Some people don’t, and unfortunately, some of them are medical and emergency personnel. A living will and a DNR order are not interchangeable. They are not the same thing. The living will is your instructions for end-of-life care when you’re not able to speak for yourself. It is part of a set of documents called Advance Care Directives that might cover things such as who will direct your care if you can’t, and who can admit you for care. The DNR is an order your doctor gives about not providing resuscitation for respiratory arrest or heart attack -- AFTER having discussed your wishes with you in advance. I can easily envision a situation where things could go very wrong.
Let’s say you have a living will and for some reason emer- Saturday Please Arrive gency services personnel are called. They might ask, “Do you & Sunday 5225 N. Freya Before 3PM have a living will?” You answer, “Yes.” Suddenly, they might 1-4 PM ** $8.00 Entry ** decide not to treat your condition appropriately and transport you as quickly. EMTs are not the ones to decipher what you mean in your living will. Their job is to get you to the hospital fast and in the best condition possible. Once there, your wishes in the living will take effect, and the doctors will invoke that ONLY if there are end-of-life concerns. Check with elder legal services in your area to be sure you understand the ramifications of your Advance Healthcare Directive documents. Laws can differ from state to state. Then discuss it with your doctor to make sure there’s no confusion about what you want. Remember, you can change your mind about your living will anytime you choose. How Can Phonies Rest In Peace? An investigation last year by the Chicago Tribune turned up a large number of people who had claimed to be medal recipients but weren’t. Military records were checked, obituaries were scrutinized and information was amassed and compared. Of the more than 300 cases studied, the newspaper turned up approximately 100 each of phony claims for Silver Stars, Navy Crosses, Distinguished Service Crosses, Air Force Crosses and the big one -- Medals of Honor. Worst of all, it also discovered fake information on headstones in military cemeteries. It boggles the mind, this last bit. When I buried my own father at Arlington National Cemetery, paperwork had to be handed over and, I assume, was looked at by the cemetery directors. For a headstone to be inscribed with a bogus valor decoration, it must mean that some fake paperwork was involved, perhaps passed along by the families who believed in the tales of exploit that must have been
told all along by the veterans, along with a fistful of fake medals. That’s the only explanation I can come up with. For those of you who’ve claimed either verbally or in writing that you earned medals when you really didn’t, send me an e-mail and tell me why you did it. I’m curious, I really am. I want to know what makes a United States military veteran lie. Tell me, too, if you’re going to get square with family and friends before you end up in a cemetery with bogus information on your headstone for all eternity. I’ll do another column later, without names, with a summary of the answers -- assuming that anyone is willing to respond. My e-mail address is below. Reply by May 15. Write to Freddy Groves in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail. com. (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

Give Kids Another Chance for Pet
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I am appalled, angered and saddened by the response from Dori to the parent who wrote you after her children’s goldfish died because they didn’t take care of it. She said the children were set up to fail. Wow. I hope this person does not have children. If she believes that a child is set up for failure, the child will believe he or she is a failure and will not try to improve and grow mentally. I cannot see how a parent could feel right by instilling this in a child’s mind! So, a goldfish was not cared for, and died. While this is sad and maybe could have been avoided, it is not completely the child’s fault. For one thing, goldfish are very susceptible to disease and overeating, which can cause death. Parents should always supervise the care of a pet, for sure, but that does not mean taking complete care of it.

Children need to learn structure and respect for living things. A goldfish is a very good start. They mainly need clean water, nutritional food and possibly occasional medicine. Children have to learn about their pet, and a goldfish can be a great start with the proper supervision from parents and a book to read (or parents can read to them) about the needs of that specific pet. As for the parent’s question about whether to get another pet, I think she could get the child a hamster or Guinea pig. This pet would be much more interactive and enjoyable. I know that if the parents supervise and stick to the structure, the child will take care of the pet. -- Lora S., via e-mail DEAR LORA: Great answer. When Legends Meet On a sunny afternoon in the garage area of Las Vegas Motor Speedway, ex-champions David Pearson and Tony Stewart got to know each other. At the time, Pearson was 70 years old, Stewart 33. Pearson’s last championship occurred in 1969, when what is now Nextel Cup was referred to as Grand National and there were no races in Las Vegas. Perhaps more than any of his contemporaries, though, Stewart is a throwback to the days when dinosaurs named Pearson, Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough and Bobby Allison ruled the earth. Earth, at the time, mainly consisted of the South. Pearson, who won 105 races, was leisurely strolling around with another notable resident of Spartanburg, S.C., former car owner and ace mechanic Walter “Bud” Moore. As luck would have it, they happened to be in front of the stall where Stewart’s No. 20 Chevrolet rested, shortly after the end of a practice session and as Stewart was climbing out of his orange car. “Do you know Tony Stewart?” I asked Pearson. “I’ve met him,” he said. “I don’t know him. I know he can sure enough drive a race car.” “I think you’d like him,” I said. “Hang on a minute.” I then walked over in front of the car, where Stewart was discussing various matters of technical significance with his crew chief, Greg Zipadelli. “David Pearson’s out there,” I said to Stewart. “Want to say hello?” “Give me a minute,” said Stewart. I walked back out and started talking with Moore, about whose
teams I used to write, and Pearson, the hero of my youth. Pearson looks as if he could climb right back into a stock car and run 500 miles. He seems far more robust than a man who underwent openheart surgery a few years back. He has the same barrel chest and broad shoulders he boasted when he was winning 11 races in 18 tries in 1973. After a few minutes of chitchat, though, the proud ex-champion was getting a little restless. With a small sense of urgency, I excused myself and returned to the garage stall, where Stewart had been intercepted by someone else. “Hey, Tony,” I said, “the best stock-car racer who ever lived is out there, and I don’t think I’d make him wait much longer.” Stewart looked up. “Don’t let him get away,” he said. “I’ll be right there.” Thirty seconds may have passed before Stewart strode out into the desert sunshine. “Hey,” he said, shaking Pearson’s hand, “I need you to drive my car for me at Darlington. I ain’t worth a damn at that track.” Pearson didn’t flinch. “All you got to do is drive that thing as high on the track as you can get it,” he said. “That’s what I’m doing,” Stewart said, smiling. “You ought to have driven it when it was hard,” replied Pearson, who won there a record 10 times. “It’s easy now.” By this time, a small army of photographers had descended. After a reasonable period of “photo ops” taken while they chatted, Stewart and Pearson walked over to the Joe Gibbs Racing transporter and went inside to chat a while longer. Pearson came out with an autographed photo for his grandson, aptly named David. Say what you want about Stewart, but he is nothing if not mindful of the past and respectful of its heroes. At any given time that he isn’t embroiled in high-level discussions on just how he’s going to manage to win the next race, a visit to Stewart’s transporter will find him
talking shop with a Red Farmer or a Donnie Allison. Stewart feels at home in the company of the hardscrabble men who preceded him. No one needs to remind Pearson of how great he was. He’s a proud man, but he’s not one to elaborate on his great works and deeds. Pearson grew up in a textile-mill village, and when he rose to prominence, he knew well the feeling of being looked down upon by the society folks. I wasn’t kidding when I told Stewart he was the best stock-car racer ever to strap on a helmet. That’s my opinion and it’s unlikely to change.
