HEY TIDBITS®, READERS, IT IS
(plus tax)
EASY TO BE GREEN! by Sarah Bates Tidbits readers have asked and we’ve answered. In honor of both Earth Day, April 22nd, and Arbor Day, April 24th, we’re happy to give you all the Tidbits you’ll need on going green! • You’ve probably heard this one: switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs the next time you need to replace a light bulb. But, how about some actual numbers? Compact fluorescents use about 75% less energy and produce about 75% less heat than incandescent bulbs. • Look for the ENERGY STAR® logo. Appliances with this logo have met the U.S. Department of Energy’s guidelines. By switching to these approved products, Americans saved nearly $16 billion dollars on utility bills in 2007 alone! • Remember that unused appliances still use electricity. Unplug them whenever possible. • If you can, buy it in paper packaging over plastic and look for brands that use recycled paper. Paper packaging can be used in your compost pile, the plastic can’t! • If you have to get plastic products, make sure they are recyclable. There are many different types of recyclable plastics, all designated by numbers on the packaging. Find out which types your local recycling center can process and try to purchase only those kinds. • Did you know a treadmill gives of approximately two pounds of carbon-dioxide in a thirty to sixty minute workout? • Replace that treadmill or stationary bike with the great outdoors. Walking or riding in the park saves energy and gym fees – what’s more, it’s a breath of fresh air! • Take that workout even greener – buying a used bike, sneakers made with recycled rubber, reusable water bottles and organic cotton work out clothes are a start! • Combine your workouts with your daily routine. Walk or ride your bike to the post office or the pharmacy.

THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta
Spring Switcheroo With April here and winter fast on its way out (and completely gone in some parts of the country), it’s time to set up your home for the warmer months. Spring cleaning can be thought of as a three-stage operation: cleaning up winter damage, switching out cold-weather protection for hot-weather guards, and scheduling additional do-it-yourself projects through the next couple of seasons. Winter storms tend to leave debris and damage on and around a home’s exterior and yard. Start with a walkaround inspection of the roof and gutter system, removing loose debris like A S E ASY A S tree branches and noting areas that need more attention, like torn shingles and dammedWe Also Clean Tile ...... 1, 2, 3! up gutter sections. EASY TO BE GREEN! (continued): • Think about what you want before you open the refrigerator door. Studies show that opening the door and standing with it open accounts for 17% of the refrigerator’s total electricity use each year. • Want more of a reason to recycle? Try the Great Pacific Garbage Patch on for size, a swirling mass of garbage in the Pacific ocean made up of two smaller halves, the eastern lies between California and Hawaii and the western lies between Hawaii and Japan. • It is not a solid mass, but more like a plastic soup – which makes it hard to gauge the exact size. It is estimated to weigh nearly 100 million tons and cover an area nearly twice the size of the continental United States. • Here’s another way to keep your plastic out of the landfills and the oceans: take reusable shopping bags to the grocery store and skip the plastic bags.
*Must present this ad at time of estimate for discount. • Sixty-eight pounds of clothing and textiles are thrown out per person each year in America alone. Donate those old clothes to GoodWill or The Salvation Army. • The United Nations Environment Program estimate that 46,000 pieces of plastic were in each square mile of our oceans in 2006 alone. • Plastic debris kills more than 100,000 marine animals each year. • In 2005, two million tons of plastic water bottles ended up in landfills. • Speaking of water, studies show that often times tap water is more highly regulated than bottled water, as it must pass municipal water system testing for harmful content in the water. The National Resources Defense Council found that approximately 25% of bottled water is really just tap water. • Twenty million tons of electronic wastes are thrown out each year! turn the page for more!

thing pops up where you are? If you end up moving, then you might take $2,000 from savings to fix up the kitchen and get the house sold. Don’t do it unless you’re going to pay cash, though! You don’t want a second mortgage hanging over your heads, making everything even more difficult. - Dave

EASY TO BE GREEN! (continued): • Recycle your old electronics! Electronic devices may contain toxic materials. Keep them as long as possible and recycle them when you’re done. • Fourteen million Americans use public transportation daily. 855 million gallons of gas are saved each year by choosing public transportation. • Have to have a car? While buying a Hybrid is a step in the right direction, consider buying used first. You will save the energy it would take a company to manufacture a brand new car and there are already some great cars out there that get that desired 35 mpg. • Buying fresh food from your local farmer’s market saves packaging, processing and shipping waste – it also keeps money in the local economy! • Take the extra time to search out green and organic products when shopping. Chances are if you want it, someone makes it organic and green – even fingernail polish! • 1.5 acres of rainforest are lost every second. • Finished with that book or DVD? Join an online swapping club. Websites such as paperbackswap.com and its sister sites offer a free way to trade your old books, DVDs and CDs and find that new one you had been wanting to get – for free! • Start your own compost pile for your used paper, coffee grinds, eggshells, yard trimmings and table scraps. • Research shows that if every American composted just their kitchen scraps, we could keep a knee-deep layer of garbage the size of San Francisco out of the landfills each year. • It takes approximately one gallon of water for the average person to wash their hands and five gallons to flush the toilet. • Make a chart for each member of your house and calculate the amount of water you use in one week. Reduce this number by taking shorter showers, always loading the dishwasher full and wearing outfits more than once before washing. • Put a rain barrel beneath your waterspouts or buy a rain cistern. Use the collected water in your garden. Also, always remember to water your plants during the coolest part of the day. This keeps more water from evaporating. • Humans have been cleaning way before the invention of pretty, packaged plastic bottles. Tub need cleaning? Spray the surface with diluted vinegar or lemon juice and let it sit for thirty minutes. Scrub clean! • Using green and organic health care products not only keeps harsh chemicals out of the drains and landfills, but it keeps it out of your body! Studies show that men and women can absorb up to five pounds of chemicals from cosmetics, lotions, creams and other products into their skin each year! The End

Dear Dave, Could you explain, and comment on, investing in Viaticals? I’ve been hearing offers that guarantee 10 percent. Does that sound fishy to you? Lee Dear Lee, Everything about Viaticals is fishy. Stay away from them! A Viatical investment is when you buy a position in a terminally ill person’s life insurance policy. Mathematically, you’re betting on when they will die. A tremendous number of scam artists are involved in these things, and even the ones who go by the book have a lot of trouble, because you really can’t predict when someone’s going to die. Viaticals are a disaster. They’re being slammed by state attorney generals all across the country. Lots of these companies are being shut down, and most of those that are technically legitimate in this area are incompetent. Never put money in Viaticals! - Dave - Dave* For more great financial advice, please visit www.davesays.org.

Dear Dave, The company where my husband works recently told everyone that massive layoffs are coming, and they should start looking for other jobs. Right now all of his options are out-oftown. A real estate agent told us we’d have to remodel our kitchen in order to sell the house. We’ve got $3,500, but remodeling would take about $2,000. Should we get a second mortgage to get the work done? Pamela Dear Pamela, You might want to get another opinion. Sure, a new kitchen would be nice, but is that the end-all, be-all? Either way, there’s no way I’d go into debt to make this happen. Your house isn’t even on the market yet. There’s no reason to fix up a house that’s not for sale, especially when you only have $3,500 to your name! There is, for sure, a financial storm brewing on your horizon. Start right now living on rice and beans and saving up piles of cash to build a bigger umbrella. Wait until he actually lands another job before you make any big decisions. What if some-

Products to Make Our Lives Easier The older we get, the less we care about brand names. We’re more concerned with how easy something is to use and whether it does what we need it to do. Take cell phones, for example. Have you noticed that they’re getting smaller and smaller as technology gets better? And there’s the not-so-small matter of the monthly charge for a cell phone when you sign a two-year contract. The Jitterbug cell phone might not be fancy, but it has some features that are just right for us: big buttons that we can actually see, simple dialing and inexpensive dialing plans that include long distance. If you’re in the market for a cell phone that’s easier to use, check Jitterbug at www.jitterbug.com or call 1-800-918-8543 to ask questions. Be sure there’s service in
your area. I found a great place on the Internet to look for other items that can make our lives easier, too: the Senior Store. Check out the wide variety of just-for-us merchandise at www.seniorstore.com, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at what’s available. Check especially the categories Household Gifts and Low Vision Products. There are large-button TV remotes with good contrast between buttons and the background, making it much easier to easily find the right button. One item I’ve found very handy is a tiny magnifier the size of a credit card that can be put in a wallet. It’s great for reading menus. The large text address book and easy-to-read wall calendars are helpful, too. If a special occasion is coming up and somebody asks you what you’d like as a gift, avoid getting yet another knickknack or shirt and send them to The Senior Store instead.

Veterans Helping Veterans The National Veterans Foundation is a help group staffed by veterans who’ve been there. Its Web site, www.nationalveteransfoundation.org, has a wealth of veterans information, and even if you’ve been a veteran for a long time, it’s worthwhile to take a look. You’ll find veterans news, an events calendar, resource center, employment info, blogs and a chat room. If you call LifeLine, there are mental-health professions on staff who are trained in crisis, trauma and suicide counseling. While you’re on the Web site, check the staff list -you’ll find some impressive credentials there. Additionally, the NVF has a Live Help online feature and a veterans hotline with counselors from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. PST. I tested it, and it took about 3 seconds for someone to respond. But these guys at NVF aren’t just sitting there waiting for the phone to ring. They’re out there working for the benefit of veterans, including testifying at Congressional hearings to help bring about needed
changes. If you want to talk to someone about any veterans issue you might have, call the NVF at 1-888-7774443. Especially helpful on the Web site is the First Step area for new veterans. All your benefits are summarized for you, so you don’t miss any. The group also acts as a go-between with the Department of Veterans Affairs, including helping with the often confusing paperwork. In addition, the NVF has a street team program. Twice a week they fan out (in the Los Angeles area, where they’re based), hooking up with homeless veterans and handing out water, lunches and information. Check the NVF Web site. If you like what you see, consider sending along a few dollars to help the cause. Write to Freddy Groves in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail. com. (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We bought a black-and-white Pomeranian/Chihuahua cross when she was 9 months old. “Sheila” has long legs and is very pretty -- she actually looks like a Papillon. She is now 16 months old and is shedding. Is this common with this mixed breed? -- Marilyn from Canada DEAR MARILYN: Sheila sounds very pretty indeed, though I’m sure the shedding is distressing. While shedding is not that common in purebred Chihuahuas, it is noted in purebred Pomeranians. According to petpom.com, Pomeranian puppies shed their baby coats between three and seven months of age, allowing their adult coats to come in. Adult (or in your case, young adult) Pomeranians are known to shed their undercoat. This sometimes depends on seasonal changes, but some Po-

meranians, particularly indoor dogs, shed lightly all year. Unspayed females may shed at different times, as well. If Sheila is shedding fur so heavily that patches of fur are missing or her coat is so thin you can see her skin through it, take her to a veterinarian and have her checked out. Heavy shedding often indicates a medical problem. If the shedding is not severe, comb Sheila’s coat daily to prevent matting. Do keep an eye on her to see if she is showing any signs of stress or illness, and check her fur and skin closely from time to time to check for any excessive shedding or signs of irritated skin. If she has not yet been spayed, go ahead and schedule this procedure with her veterinarian. As a mixed breed, Sheila should not have puppies and so shouldn’t have to go through issues like heat cycles, which also can cause excess shedding. Many Ways to Treat Enlarged Prostate DEAR DR. DONOHUE: About three years ago, I had a procedure to reduce the size of my prostate. It was Greenlight PVP laser procedure. My doctor did it on an outpatient basis. Since then, I have a normal flow for someone who is 79 years old. I sleep through the night without having to get up to go to the bathroom. Perhaps you could comment on this treatment. -- L.M. ANSWER: Prostate gland enlargement -- benign (noncancerous) prostate hyperplasia or hypertrophy -- is something that happens to just about all men. Fifty percent of men between the ages of 51 and 60 have some gland enlargement, and by age 80, more than 80 percent have it. Not all these men have to deal with its exasperating consequences -- frequent urination, nighttime urination, difficulty starting the stream -- but enough do that it is a quite common problem. Sometimes medicines can relax the chokehold that the big prostate has on the urethra, the tube draining the bladder, and there also are medicines that shrink the gland. When medicines strike out, a large number of invasive
procedures are readily available. The standard operation, TURP -- transurethral resection of the prostate -is done with a scope and instrument passed into the urethra and advanced upward to the gland. The doctor shaves away portions of the gland. TUNA -- transurethral needle ablation; TUMT -- transurethral microwave therapy; and TUIP -- transurethral incision of the prostate are procedures done very much like a TURP, but they employ different techniques for reducing the gland’s size. Some are done in the doctor’s office. Greenlight Laser Photovaporization is a technique in which the prostate gland is downsized by vaporizing the excess with a laser that emits a green light. One big advantage this offers is a reduction of bleeding. The green-light laser seals blood vessels in the process. I am sure many men readers will appreciate your bringing up the topic. The booklet on the prostate gland, both enlargement and cancer of, summarizes treatments for these conditions. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1001W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2009 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Kyle Busch Wants It All Like him or not, NASCAR needs Kyle Busch. Sports in general need him. He can play hero or villain, depending on one’s point of view, but he can’t play
anyone but himself. There are as many corporate spokesmen in the cockpits as there are in the skyscrapers. The Busch brothers are different, and a lot has to do with both of them being raised in Las Vegas. They’re a breed apart. They don’t fall back on the false modesty that characterizes most of their peers. At 23 years of age, Kyle Busch is unafraid of being himself, which is a lesson most racers don’t learn until they are at least 10 years older. Mark Martin didn’t learn it until he was in his 40s. In a forest thick with firebrands, know-it-alls, pretty boys, yes men, weasels, a few too old and a few too young, the Busch brothers are pretty unique. Kurt is approximately seven years older, which means the world has beaten him down a bit more. Kyle Busch is in all his youthful glory, and unlike most, has the talent to back it all up. He’s Jim McMahon under center, Reggie Jackson batting
in the World Series, Andre Agassi patrolling the baseline and Magic Johnson driving the lane. If Kyle Busch were modest, he would also be disingenuous. That doesn’t mean he’s going to be popular. Society, not to mention the grandstands, often frowns on those with the courage to portray themselves just as they are. Kyle Busch wants it all, so much so that he could be a character in fiction, a Jay Gatsby or a Roy Hobbs. At Bristol, he was mad at his pit crew and blamed them for costing him the Nationwide Series race. Few others would go public as he did. Asked if he needed to mend some fences with the oil-stained wretches of pit road, Busch said, “We don’t talk about that. If they don’t know that, they don’t need to be working for me. These guys are great. They appreciate what I do behind the wheel. I appreciate what they do on pit road. That’s a given for any team. “The guys should hang their head for (Saturday), but then wake up the next morning rejuvenated and ready to go, and should’ve thought about all that stuff that happened and not let it get to them (Sunday). There are ways to get better in this sport, and the only way is to jump back out there. It’s basically reviewing your fear. You just get back out there and do it again.”
If there’s a way for Kyle Busch to get better, it’s going to be a long season for everyone else. *** Monte Dutton has covered motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette since 1993.
