If there is a country, it’s probably had a king at one point or another. This week Tidbits delves into the world of monarchs and gives you some kingly facts on royalty. • As a precaution, Prince Charles and Prince William never travel on the same plane. • Marie Antoinette was the fifteenth of the sixteen children. • Queen Victoria is often called the Grandmother of Europe because eight of her nine children married into other European royal families. There are several current monarchs in Europe who are her great, great grandchildren, including Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip, King Harald V of Norway, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, King Juan Carlos I of Spain, and his wife Queen Sofia. • Queen Victoria was also the great grandmother to the Russian Grand Duchess Anastasia, more commonly known as “Princess” Anastasia. • The only king in a deck of cards without a mustache is the king of hearts. • King Sobhuza II of Swaziland (1899-1982) reigned for a whopping eighty-two years and nine months, the longest of any monarch in recent history. • Other lengthy reigns include those of Louis XIV of France, with seventy-two years, three months, and Queen Victoria, with nearly sixty-four years. • Henry VI of England was only eight months old when he became king in 1422. • Elizabeth II has currently surpassed any record for long life held by a reigning British monarch. She is eighty-three as of April 21st. • The oldest British monarch to begin reign was William IV, who came to the throne at the age of sixty-four. Prince Charles will surpass this record if he becomes king after February of 2013.

Last week, we learned about clearing debris from the rooftop and noting damage to be taken care of. This week, let’s go into more detail about the gutter system -- a critical component of a healthy roof and a healthy house. Gutter dams -- buildups of leaves, twigs, nests and other debris in one or more spots along a gutter run -- can cause a lot of damage to the gutter, and left unchecked, can cause problems in other parts of the house. For example, water spilling over the top of a gutter or through a torn gutter seam can cause leaks or cracks in the foundation directly beneath that spot, in a much shorter time that one can imagine. So inspecting and cleaning the gutter system twice a year -- spring and fall -- is important. You can do A S E ASY A S some of this inspection from the rooftop, but for a more thorough look, set up a ladder (with a helper on ...... 1, 2, 3! the ground to brace the ladder and to take notes for you) and move along the run. To clean the gutters, wear sturdy work gloves and carry a couple of tools in your belt -- particularly a - Lifetime Warranty - Scratch Resistant long screwdriver or sturdy rod to break up stubborn dams. Once these debris piles are loosened up with - Stain Resistant a long tool (which also scares off any critters that might be nesting in said debris pile), grab the debris G RANITE - Heat Resistant and throw them down to the ground. C OUNTERTOPS Once all these dams are cleared away, take the garden hose up with you, set it at the highest end of the run, and have your helper turn the water on full force. The water will wash remaining leaves and debris $200 O FF G RANITE S INK to the top of the downspout, where they will pile up on the downspout screen -- from which you can with the purchase of a full kitchen project remove them. The water flow also will reveal leaks in the gutter system that can be patched up after the (Must present coupon at time of estimate • Expires 5/20/09) cleaning is complete. Installed in 1-day! Most leaks appear at the seams where sections of the gutter run meet up. (This is also where most Granite counter that fits over dams tend to build up, as there is a little lip at the seam on which debris can get caught.) Loose seams existing countertops can be reconnected fairly quickly by drilling a new hole through the upper side of the gutter sections FREE In-Home Consultation where they overlap, and inserting a screw and washer (with the head inside the gutter and the screw (509) 931-1115 protruding outside it), tightening with a wingnut. www.granitetransformations.com/spokane Gutter sections with rips or holes in the middle, rather than the seams, should be replaced if possible. If a hole is not too big, however, it can be patched using a gutter patch kit.

HOME TIP: Newer gutter systems sometimes come with, or have available, patching or replacement kits. Check with the gutter manufacturer or at a home-improvement store. He was crowned king one year later. They had no children. • Isabella Valois, Princess of France, was the second wife of Richard II of England. She was nearly seven years old when she became queen in 1396. Richard was nineteen. Purely a political move, the marriage ended four years later with the murder of Richard II. • Henry I of England had the most acknowledged illegitimate children of any British monarch. He had, at least, twenty-four known children outside his marriage. • The current youngest ruling monarch is Druk Gyalpo (Dragon King) Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk of Bhutan. Both are daughters of Henry VIII. • Queen Anne of England, Scotland and Ireland had eighteen children, though only one survived infancy. RULERS & MONARCHS (continued): • Queen Elizabeth II sent her first email from a Army base in 1976. • Prince Phillip, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, was present in Tokyo harbor when Japan surrendered in World War II. • Prince Charles’s second wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, will never become queen. When Prince Charles accedes the throne, she will be officially titled Her Royal Highness, The Princess Consort. • Lady Jane Grey is known as the Nine Day Queen. She was the grand niece to Henry VIII, and when his son Edward VI died from tuberculosis at age fifteen, he willed the crown to Jane to prevent either of his sisters, Elizabeth I or Mary I, from claiming the throne. Despite Edward’s will, Mary had the backing of Parliament and when she took the throne, she had her seventeen year-old cousin Jane beheaded. However, Mary asked that it be a private execution – it is said to be out of respect for her cousin. • The Duke of York, Queen Elizabeth II’s second son, served in the British Royal Navy for twenty-two years. • King Edward VII, born November 9th, was the first British sovereign to mark his official birthday on a separate day of the year, choosing to celebrate it in May or June. Aten was the sun god of Egypt and had been part of a monotheistic effort by the prior King. Tut changed his name to Tutankamun after the Egyptians stopped worshipping Aten and reverted back to polytheism. • James VI of Scotland, son of Mary, Queen of Scots, had been ruling Scotland since he was one year old – nearly thirty-six years – when he also became King James I of England after the death of Elizabeth I in 1603. • The Great Pyramid of Egypt was built during the reign of King Khufu around 2560 B.C. and was the tallest man-made structure for nearly 4,000 years. • Prince Charles was not officially titled The Prince of Wales until 1958, when he was nine years old. Dear Dave, I’m 19-years old and living at home while I go to school and work part-time. I make about $400 a month. My parents have started your plan, and I feel like I should do something to help out with expenses. I could do this by paying my expenses, or paying them rent each month. What do you think? Ruth Dear Ruth, I love your attitude! If you’re in college, getting a good education is your first responsibility. You’re not making a lot of money, so you wouldn’t be able to contribute much. I think $100 a month would be very fair, but sit down with your parents and talk this over. You’ll need money to live on, and they’ll need to feel good about this. A plan that does both is a winner. What you give them at this point really isn’t going to change their lives. It’s a symbol of your character and your respect for your parents. A willingness to contribute and help out is a great thing, Ruth. There are lots of people out there who are twice your age, who still can’t seem to grasp these concepts. Way to go! - Dave (small hassle or big idea?) Dear Dave, I own a small business that produces niche products. Lately, we’ve been getting calls from prospective customers who want to use our products in different ways. How do you advise handling an “outside the box” request? Sean

(worried about the agreement) Dear Dave, I received an offer in writing from a credit card company. It’s vaguely written, and it makes me nervous. It sort of leaves a back door open for them to go back on their word. I asked for another letter and they sent it, but now I wonder if I’m really okay in this situation. Dale Dear Dale, If you’ve got a document, and the language in it can convince someone in the future that you’ve both agreed to the specified terms, then that’s enough – even if it’s just three or four paragraphs long. Staple a cashier’s check or money order for the agreed-upon amount to that letter, and send it back certified mail, return receipt requested, as fast as you can. Also, make sure you keep copies of the cashier’s check or money order – along with the letter – in a safe place for the rest of your natural life! This is for your own protection, Dale. You never know when something like this will rear its ugly head again. This kind of thing can be a problem with credit card companies. It can be difficult to be certain that you’ve reached an agreement with them, because lots of them will lie to you in a heartbeat. Some of them lie to my team when we call them, and we don’t even owe them money! - DaveDave* For more great financial advice, please visit www.davesays.org.

He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live to please themselves. Instead, they will live to please Christ, who died and was raised for them. Dear Sean, Ask yourself three basic questions: Can the product be produced in the needed quantity for a fair price? Will it be something you’ll want to hang your reputation on? Do you really want to do this? If you answer “yes,” additional questions arise. Can the product be used the way they want to use it? Must it be modified, and at what cost? Can you supply it on time? I know I’m giving you questions, not answers, but in the end, providing a quality, functional product in a timely manner for a fair, profitable price is the key to a small business’ success. An unusual request just might be a great entrepreneurial opportunity. It’ll probably take some work, because when great ideas show up they’re usually wearing work clothes. But do some research, and make the same basic manufacturing and economic decisions you would with a new item. Remember, this could open up a whole new market for you! - Dave

Are You Due $250? The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2008 has a little something for seniors: a onetime payment of $250 for all 55 million of us. Here are a few things you need to know: Who will receive the payment? Nearly everybody who collected Social Security, SSI, Veterans or Railroad retirement benefits during November or December 2008 or January 2009. If you didn’t start getting benefits until February, you don’t qualify for the payment. When will I get my payment? Sometime during the last week of May or first week of June, or sooner. Will the amount be added to my regular payment? No, it will be a separate payment. If you have automatic deposit or Direct Express, you’ll receive the money in the

same way. Will I and my spouse both get a payment? Yes, if you’re both getting benefits already, you’ll both receive a payment. Do I have to do anything to get the money? No, it’s automatic. Therefore, if someone contacts you and says they can “help” you get your payment if you’ll give them your personal information, or if you see an ad offering help, it’s a scam. If you suspect a scam, contact the Social Security fraud hotline at 1-800-269-0271. If I receive multiple benefits, for example Social Security as well as Railroad benefits, will I get multiple payments? No, it’s one payment per person. What if I don’t get my payment? If you haven’t received your payment by the end of May, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 AFTER June 4 and let it know. Or you can call your local Social Security office. If you only receive VA benefits and don’t get your payment, contact the VA after that date.

Insulin Shots Botched at Two Army Hospitals It seems fairly simple, giving an insulin injection. People do it safely at home all the time. How then is it possible that trained professionals at two Army hospitals managed to pass illnesses among their patients by not using insulin pens correctly? The hospitals were William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas, and Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital at Fort Polk in Louisiana. The insulin pens in question were the disposable type with multiple doses in each one. They were to be used by one patient over the course of multiple injections, with a fresh needle at each use. Instead medical staff took those multi-dose pens and used them on other patients. It’s said that the needles for the pens were changed between doses, but that didn’t stop the cartridge from being contaminated, allowing risk of transmission of hepatitis C between patients, and HIV and “other blood-borne pathogens” as well.

This wasn’t a short-term deal, either. It apparently went on for two years. Of the nine facilities that used the same type of pen, only two managed to do it wrong. At this point, the hospitals are hunting for the more than 2,000 patients who are now at risk and offering them blood testing. Staff at the two hospitals are being retrained on the correct use of the pens, which includes labeling each pen with the name of the one patient who will use it. There is information on the Food and Drug Administration Web site (www.fda.gov). Type “insulin pen” in the search box. Meanwhile, if you are a diabetic who receives injections via an insulin pen at any kind of hospital, Army or otherwise, be sure the pen stays with you and has your name on it. Hi there my name is Joey and I’m 1 1/2 years old. Currently I belong to the Humane Society but a nice family is fostering me because I didn’t like being locked up all the time. I am very gentle and love to be a lap dog. Yup, me the big bad pit bull loves to play with you and sleep in your lap. I’m house trained, walk well on a lead, not much of a barker, love kids and other dogs. So if you think I’m the guy you’re looking for please call my foster mom at 465-4655 to come see me.

Zuzu - Shepherd mix, Pet ID 7443033

Zuzu is a bit shy at first, and since she’s young, she still finds the world a little scary. She’s still a pup and she will need plenty of exercise, attention, and basic training to help her adjust and show her true potential. She is very loving, cuddly and sweet. Petting and cuddling make her feel much better about everything.

zipsdrivein.com PAWS CORNER By Sam Mazzotta Renters Should Respect Landlords’ Pet Rules DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I own two townhouses, which I rent out to tenants. In the lease I specify that no pets are allowed; however, I will sometimes let a tenant keep a small animal such as a cat or toy dog, as I understand it can be hard to find affordable housing that accepts pets. I will be stopping that practice after my current tenants leave. Why? Because almost every time I have given permission for a pet to be kept, the tenant has abused my kindness by either bringing in additional pets, or by not cleaning up after their pet and causing hundreds or thousands of dollars in damages. I hate to turn pet owners away, but from now on I will have to -- I can’t keep spending money to remodel these damaged and stinky townhouses. Please tell your readers that if they are renting, they need

to be responsible tenants and follow the rules set out in the lease! -- Grumpy Landlord in Boulder, Colo. DEAR GRUMPY: Well, you told ‘em, and I agree. I know it can be difficult to find a rental home or apartment that accepts pets, but it is important to be upfront and honest with landlords or property managers. Sometimes a compromise can be worked out, but pet owners must keep their end of the bargain. Some issues can’t be avoided, such as pet fur collecting in the corners or a dog that barks occasionally. But keeping the unit clean and odor-free, making sure pets are well-behaved and healthy, not keeping more pets than are allowed -- these are essential elements to maintaining a good relationship with the landlord, and in the long run, increasing the number of landlords willing to rent to pet owners. Don’t mess it up for other pet owners by failing to follow rental rules. Send your tips, questions and comments to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Do Rusty Nails Cause Lockjaw? DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please talk about lockjaw. I grew up on a farm, and it was something I heard about all the time. You were supposed to be careful when you were in a barn to spot any rusty nails you might step on. Is that so? I don’t hear much about it anymore. Why? -- L.S. ANSWER: I heard the rusty nail/lockjaw story as a kid too, and I didn’t grow up on a farm. Frankly it’s a seldom-seen illness since routine immunization against it has been in effect for many years. The real name of lockjaw is tetanus, and just about everyone has gotten a tetanus immunization. The tetanus bacterium, Clostridium tetani, is found throughout the world in soil and in animal feces. A number of cases develop after a puncture wound when the bacterium is introduced deep into tissues. Rusty nails are only one way the germ gets into the body, and they are not the most common way. The tetanus germ makes a poison that causes muscles to go into violent and painful spasms. Spasms of the jaw muscles are how tetanus came to be known as lockjaw. Patients can’t open their mouths. Tetanus also causes generalized muscle spasms, with the patient awake during the spasms. The slightest stimulation -- a loud noise, for example -- can trigger muscle spasms, so tetanus patients are kept in darkened, quiet rooms.

Penicillin, human tetanus immune globulin and medicines that control muscle spasms can get most patients through this harrowing illness. I don’t want to scare people about tetanus. It is uncommon. However, everyone, at every age, should keep their tetanus immunizations up to date. They have to be obtained every 10 years. Only one-third of the adult population of the United States and Canada is adequately protected against tetanus. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Every spring I have hay fever so bad that I am virtually housebound. I have used antihistamines, nasal sprays -- including steroid nasal sprays -- cleansing my nose with saltwater flushes and many, many other medicines, but I do not get any relief. My primary care doctor suggests I see an allergist for allergy shots. Do they really work? Would you advise them? -- H.M. ANSWER: Allergy shots, also known as hyposensitization, work for most. An allergist first has to determine exactly what a patient is allergic to and then has a serum compounded that contains the allergic materials. The shots are then given in a series of weekly and in increasingly concentrated doses until a maintenance dose is reached, and that dose is then injected monthly. The shots stop mast cells from emptying themselves of chemicals that spur allergy symptoms like sneezing, itching and running nose when allergic material lands on them. I would advise anyone with severe allergy symptoms that do not respond to medicines to have allergy shots. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. The Torch Has Passed MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- It’s a familiar scene: Jimmie Johnson, Chad Knaus and Rick Hendrick, enjoying a victory. At Martinsville Speedway, it’s become the norm. Johnson has claimed five of the past six Sprint Cup races at the oldest track still active on the Sprint Cup Series. Johnson has won with ease and difficulty, joyous triumphs alternated with wistful remorse stemming from the Hendrick Motorsports plane tragedy near here in 2004. He’s been both counted out and presumed too early. At the end of long, taxing days at one of NASCAR’s more exhilarating tracks, Johnson repeatedly emerges victorious. Thus, the victories have begun to run together. Martinsville winners receive $11,000 grandfather clocks for their achievements. Johnson must have ringing in his ears. Not many drivers learn the nuances of winning at Martinsville. Only two active drivers have won more than twice at the paper-clip-shaped oval. Jeff Gordon, Johnson’s teammate, has won

seven times here, but it’s taken him 33 tries. Johnson’s six victories have all come in a span of 15 Martinsville races. That’s enough to convince Gordon. “He really has just dominated and taken a hold of this place,” said Gordon of Johnson, who has risen from 19th to fourth in the points standings in just three weeks. Gordon still leads the points, but it will take more than repeated top-five finishes to keep Johnson, who is going for a fourth consecutive championship, at bay. Gordon knows this. The 142 points separating them might as well be fog or mist. Everything starts over with the Chase in the fall. Even at this early point in the season, it’s obvious that Gordon and Johnson are going to make the Chase. Gordon needs to see Victory Lane, too, and it’s been 47 races now. It doesn’t help that they’re friends. Not anymore. Gordon remains the greatest driver of his generation. Forty-seven races without a victory is a drought, a famine and a pestilence combined for a man who has won 81 times in his career. What Gordon must prove is that this is still his generation. ***
