Modern Easter is a blending of multiple cultures and religions, with roots dating back several millennia! This Spring, Tidbits celebrates some fun facts you might not have known about Easter, spring, chickens, eggs – and yes, even that big, ol’ Easter Bunny. • Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Actually, it was neither. Modern ducks and geese appeared in China 6,000 years before chickens appeared in India. • Easter Sunday is the 1st Sunday after a Paschal full moon, which is the first full moon after the Spring equinox and is specifically used to determine the date of Easter. Paschal comes from the Greek pascha, which comes from the Hebrew pesach, both of which mean Passover. • Some theorize that the word Easter comes from the early church, which celebrated hebdomada alba, or “white week” (because of the white baptismal garments at Easter.) The plural of the word white was later misunderstood as the plural for the word dawn, which was translated into Old High German as eostarum, and later became Easter in English. • Another theory, that of Benedictine monk Bede, suggested that the word ‘easter’ comes from the Old English word Eostre, which dates as far back as the 8th century. • Eostre, Eastre, Ostara, Eostur, etc. all refer to the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring, who was celebrated at the spring Equinox. The name probably derives from the word and direction East, which suggests that she might have also been the goddess of dawn. • On Western calendars, Easter always falls on a Sunday within a 35-day period between March 22nd and April 25th. says Mary Magdalene visited Tiberius of turn the page for more!

THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta
Cleaning Area Rugs Q: My mother gave me two very nice Oriental rugs for my apartment, which has old pine-board flooring. What’s the best way to clean them? Can I steam clean them? -- Megan, via e-mail A: Steam cleaning is not recommended for antique Oriental rugs, for a number of reasons: The threads could be damaged by the water, colorfastness may be an issue and so on. So stay away from the rental steam cleaners in your local supermarket, as they are more suited to wall-to-wall carpets. Vacuuming is fine for most rugs, though you’ll want to set the height of the vacuum about a notch higher than the “carpet” setting on the machine. Vacuuming will pick up dust and small debris and is the best way to keep the rugs clean through the year. But what if the rugs are really dirty? Pick up a corner of one of the rugs and kick the underside. If a cloud of dirt flies out of the rug, it’s time for a more thorough cleaning than a vacuum can provide. At this point, you can either have them cleaned professionally -- something you may want to do if they are really antiques -- or you can clean them yourself, if you have the space to hang them up. You’ll need: a vacuum cleaner, cold water, mild rug shampoo, a soft natural brush and a window squeegee. Lay the rugs out on a garage floor or clean driveway. Vacuum the top and underside of each rug to remove surface dirt. Fill a pail with water and rug shampoo. Test one spot on each rug for colorfastness first with the soapy water. If the colors don’t run, begin cleaning by dipping the soft brush in the soapy water and brushing in the same direction as the nap. Wet the nap thoroughly. Wash the fringes as well, and brush out dirt. Rinse the rug thoroughly with cold, running water and squeegee in the direction of the nap until no more water is forced out. Let the rugs dry flat, turning over when the nap feels dry. Once dry, vacuum or brush one last time to fluff out the pile. HOME TIP: Spot-clean Oriental rugs by adding 1/4 cup white vinegar to two cups cool water; add one squirt of liquid dish detergent and clean the spill or stain with a brush or sponge. The vinegar prevents dyes in the rug from running. Send questions or home-repair tips to homeguru2000@hotmail.com, or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. HAMPTON, Ga. -- It’s always hard to compare the greats of different generations. Stock car greatness has a lot of levels. For instance, at Atlanta Motor Speedway, a 1971 Mercury Cyclone sat in the media center as if it were on a showroom floor. Although David Pearson didn’t drive it until 1972, it’s a car he actually drove. One he drove as well as anyone who ever drove a stock car. The occasion was the promotional prelude to the 50th Coca-Cola 600, scheduled for Lowe’s Motor Speedway on May 24. Pearson, 74, won the pole for 11 consecutive races, though the track was then known as Charlotte Motor Speedway and the race the World 600. The Mercury sitting a few feet from Pearson wasn’t the one he drove in all those qualifying sessions. Nor was it the one he drove in four victories and 14 poles. Having David Pearson and the No. 21 Wood Brothers Mercury of the 1970s in the same room is an apt celebration of excellence. Pearson, who quite possibly was the best stock-car racer who ever lived, looks fit enough to give the cars of today a decent shakedown. He doesn’t have the desire though. In the blunt, unvarnished simplicity of language that has marked his career, Pearson said simply, “There ain’t nothing about racing now that I like.” He said he had a conversation with old chum Jim Hunter, now a NASCAR vice president, in which he expressed that view. According to Pearson, Hunter asked him what he didn’t like, and Pearson reiterated the first point, telling Hunter, “There ain’t nothing I do like.” Leonard Wood, chief mechanic during the glory days, is from a family that still competes in NASCAR. He wanted nothing to do with Pearson’s rant, though he was sitting right next to him. Pearson, of course, lives comfortably but not ostentatiously in his hometown of Spartanburg, S.C., and no longer relies on imperial NASCAR for his livelihood. Asked if he’d like to go out and mix it up with the stars of today in Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500, Pearson said the only thing he wished was that the money being made now was the same being made back then. Pearson, who won 105 Cup races in 574 tries, won $2,836,220 in his entire career.
www.spokanetidbits.com That’s more than Matt Kenseth has won this year, but just barely. Pearson isn’t an angry or bitter man. He’s almost dispassionate when discussing the racing of today. It’s not like he’s wearing a sandwich board and picketing the racetrack. He’s just listening to questions and answering them. He doesn’t have much need to think one way and talk another. Referring to the ultra-technical lingo of today’s drivers, Pearson said, “About half the time, I don’t think they know what they’re talking about. Whoever heard of putting a quarter pound of air in a tire and being able to tell the difference? All they’ve got to do is move up the race track or come down three or four feet, and it’d be the same thing.” Pearson doesn’t like the routine nature of how fields are set, with 35 locked in before the first car takes the track, and the very idea that a driver gets a free pass on the lead lap after dawdling his way off of it is anathema to this product of the Whitney mill village. He’s from a different age and doesn’t much care for the one now. But this age would be a lot more fun if Pearson was in it. *** Monte Dutton has covered motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette since 1993. He was named writer of the year by the National Motorsports Press Association in 2008. EASTER TRIVIA (continued): Rome to tell him Christ had risen – and to symbolize this, she gave him an egg. Tiberius replied that Christ had no more risen than the egg was red – and, according to tradition, the egg immediately turned red in testimony. • One of the earliest references to the celebration of the Christian Easter was in the mid-second century. Even then, it was listed as an already well-established holiday. • In Eastern Christianity, dairy products are prohibited during Lent. Eggs are considered a part of this food group, so another symbol of the use of eggs at Easter is the return of eggs to the daily diet of Easter Christians. • The Spanish dish hornazo is traditionally eaten on or around Easter and contains hard-boiled eggs as a main ingredient. • In ancient times, the cross was a symbol of the four elements or directions. Crosses that run diagonally, like an X, are called a saltire. • The Easter Egg Roll (not the food) is an annual White House tradition that dates back to President Rutherford B. Hayes, when he opened the White House Lawn to Easter egg rolling in 1878. • The cracking together of two Easter eggs is said to symbolize the cracking of the tomb in the resurrection of Christ. • The Easter bunny, or Oschter Haws, first came to America on the lips of German immigrants in the 18th century. • The use of a bunny or rabbit as a symbol of Easter is said to have originated in Germany around the 1500s. • Modern egg decorating is said to have originated from ancient Persia and the festival Nowruz, which celebrates the spring equinox. One Nowruz tradition involves the painting of eggs. This holiday also marks the first day of the Iranian New Year. turn the page for more!

EASTER TRIVIA (continued): • One fun Easter game is the tapping of eggs. Players take turns tapping their eggs against the egg of another player. The last player with an intact egg wins. • In some cultures, colored eggs are said to represent the return of spring because their bright colors represent the sun or the Northern lights. • In some parts of the world, it is customary to prepare baked goods in the shape of a lamb at Easter. The lamb is both an ancient pagan and a Christian symbol for spring and Easter. It represents the newness of life and spring, and it also represents the “Lamb of God.” • The century egg is a Chinese delicacy. While they aren’t literally one hundred years old, the eggs are cured and preserved over the course of several weeks. • You can’t think of an egg without Fabergé eggs coming to mind. A true fabergé egg is one of the sixty-nine jeweled eggs created by Carl Fabergé and his assistants around the turn of the 20th century. • Fabergé presented fifty of the eggs to Tsar Alexander III and Nicholas II of Russia. Alexander III commissioned the first egg for his wife, Maria Fyodorovna, grandmother of “Princess” Anastasia. • Only sixty-one of the original fabergé eggs have survived to present day. • Early Christians celebrated Easter on the 14th day of Nisan, which was the day of preparation for Passover. • The egg, along with rabbits, has long been a symbol of rebirth for numerous religions. The egg represents birth, while rabbits, with their large litters in early Spring, symbolize propensity and fertility – and both are representative of the growth of spring. • As for the origins of Easter baskets, one theory suggests they trace back to early celebrations of the Christian church. After Lent there was a great feast. Foods would be brought to the temple in large baskets, hence the giving of treats in baskets on Easter. • The lining of Easter baskets with grass is said to have originated with the Pennsylvania Dutch children waiting for Ostcher Haws. Because he would lay his eggs in a “rabbit’s nest”, these children would set out their caps or bonnets and line them with grass for him. • A Pysanka, a Ukrainian Easter egg, is decorated with a method called batik. Designs are drawn onto the egg with beeswax and then the egg is dyed. This is repeated, gradually adding a darker layer of dye, until the egg is complete. The End
Dear Dave, Could you please give us a list of the things people need to think about and deal with if they’ve been laid off? Anonymous Dear Anonymous, What a great question! It’s good to know you’re thinking ahead. Hopefully, you won’t have to face this problem, but if you do, here area few ideas to help hold things together. The first thing you do is take any severance pay, plus all the other money you have, and put it all in an emergency fund. You never know just how long money will be tight in a situation like this. Even if you go out immediately and find a part-time job to tide you over, you’re still going to be facing a significant loss of income in the short term. You know I love beating down debt, but at this point you need to stop paying extra on any debt you have. Yank the plug on retirement planning, too. You don’t need to worry about these things when you’re in the middle of a crisis! A bare-bones, detailed household budget is also a necessity. It’s beans and rice time, so you’ve got no business seeing the inside of a restaurant or buying new stuff for a while. If you had vacation plans, put them on hold. Many times people don’t want to experience the pain of a scaled-back lifestyle while they’re feeling the pain of a job loss. Often they’ll turn to credit cards in this situation, and that’s a really dumb idea! Be on the hunt for life insurance, if you previously had
Page 3
it only through your employer. Everyone needs a good, level-term life insurance policy outside of what’s offered at the workplace. When it comes to medical insurance, consider using a health savings account (HSA). Look for one with a high deductible and low premium. If you have a 401(k), roll it directly into an IRA with a direct transfer rollover. Do not have them send you a check! Don’t ever cash out an IRA in a situation like this, unless it’s absolutely necessary to avoid bankruptcy or foreclosure. Finally, you’ve got to be willing to take any work that comes your way. This means even part-time jobs like delivering pizza or flipping burgers. There’s no shame in honest work, and losing a job isn’t the end of the world. It just might be the opportunity for a great new career change! - Dave
(keep it secret, keep it safe?) Dear Dave, Do you think people should a keep a certain amount of emergency cash on hand at home? It seems like this would be a good in idea in case there’s a national emergency or disaster situation. Rose Dear Rose, Some people do that kind of thing. I know a guy who is a multi-millionaire, and he keeps $50,000 locked up in a safe at his home. I’m fine with that. At the same time, you shouldn’t act like a scared rabbit, and tuck all your money under a mattress, or bury it in a coffee can in the backyard, because you’re afraid the world’s coming to and end! There’s nothing wrong with having some cash stashed away at home. I’m all about being financially prepared. Just remember that the money you hide isn’t growing or earning anything! - Dave * For more great financial advice, please visit www.davesays.org.

Scammers Target the Elderly With the economy slowing down the way it has, it’s no wonder some people are a desperate for money. Unfortunately, some of them are perpetuating scams on seniors. Also unfortunately, it’s not always easy to tell when you’re faced with a scam. Sometimes the fraud involves getting you to help scammers move money out of a war-torn country, and “you” are the one they’ve picked to trust with their millions. Of course, to show good faith, you need to send them money first. Rule of thumb: Anytime a stranger wants you to do anything involving cashing checks or accessing your bank accounts, it’s a scam. Then there’s the scam that tries to get you upset about a grandchild. You get a phone call, and the person at the other end says, “This is
your grandson. I’m in trouble. Don’t tell my parents.” The hope is that you won’t bother to verify that it really is your grandchild, and that you’ll immediately rush down to wire funds to bail him out of his problem. Rule of thumb: Verify, verify, verify. Don’t send a dime until you do. One scam that’s especially sneaky and plays on our wish to be good citizens is about jury duty. You’ll get a call saying you’re about to be arrested for failing to show up for jury duty. When you say that you never got the notice to appear, you’ll be asked to give your Social Security number and date of birth so your name can be verified on the list. Don’t do it. The instant you give that information, you’re in line to become a victim of identity theft. Rule of thumb: Nobody in the court system is going to ask you for that information or intimidate you about jury duty.

Redux “Bonus” Is Anything But When you hit the 15year mark, were you offered a Redux bonus and asked to stay for 20? Is that bonus being offered to you now? Also called the Career Status Bonus, that “bonus” is anything but. Those who accept it are in effect agreeing to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars in retirement pay over the course of their lifetime. Here are a couple facts to consider: • Taxes have to be paid on the bonus, so it’s not even the full $30,000, unless you accept it while in a war zone. • On the alternate High-3 plan, if you stay for 20 years, your retirement will be based on 50 percent of your highest three years pay. On the Redux plan, after accepting the bonus and getting out at 20, you’re locked in at 40 percent, with a one-time catch-up increase at age 62. If you retire at age 40, it’s a long wait until age 62. Your COLAs (Cost of Living Adjustments) won’t equal to those on the High 3 plan, either.
If you don’t stay in as agreed, you’ll have to pay back a share of that Redux bonus. I’ll leave it to others to verify the math, but it appears that to make up for the amount lost over the years, you’d have to take your “bonus” and invest it at a 14 percent to 24 percent return, depending on rank and length of service. Is anybody getting that rate of interest nowadays? Why are so many servicemen and -women taking the Redux bonus, in spite of how much they’ll lose? Bills to pay, most likely, and a bad economy with not too many potential jobs if they get out. To check your own situation, search online for “Redux bonus retirement calculator” and plug in your numbers. Write to Freddy Groves in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail. com. (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

Fleas, Fleas, Everywhere DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The weather is turning warm again, and once more I have to deal with fleas crawling all over my two cats. Is there any way I can get rid of them? -- Clara in Valdosta, Ga. DEAR CLARA: Dealing with fleas, especially in warm, humid areas like the Southeast, is very difficult. It’s nearly impossible to completely eradicate them, but you can lessen their impact in a couple of ways. Tackle the problem before it starts. As the weather warms up, fleas become more active, and their eggs begin to hatch as well. Late winter and early spring are prime time for starting the flea battle. This means a thorough spring cleaning of your home, and treatment of your cats. Send the cats to your vet or a grooming/boarding service for an overnight stay while you clean. While they’re there, have them bathed and groomed and treated for fleas. Even if they showed no signs of

HEALTH by By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.
Be Still, My Racing Heart DEAR DR. DONOHUE: During the night and mostly early in the morning hours, my heart speeds up to 200 beats a minute. There is no pain, but it wakes me up and seems to happen if I am lying facedown. I sit up and take my pulse, which is about 70 to 72. I feel my heart slowly return to normal in two to three minutes. I have worn a Holter monitor for 24 hours. My doctor says not to worry about it. Do you think I have anything to worry about? -- S. ANSWER: For readers: A Holter monitor is a device worn externally that records all heartbeats in a given time period. They can be worn for three or more days. The doctor sees on the recording what kind of abnormal heartbeats occurred. I have to clear something up with you, S. Is your pulse 72 beats a minute when you feel your heart beating fast? The heartbeat and the pulse are one and the same. How are you counting your heartbeat? If the episodes occurred while you were being monitored and did not last long, then the doctor can dismiss it as not being worrisome. He should name the rhythm; ask what it is. If the fast heartbeats occurred at times you weren’t wearing the monitor, you need to wear it longer so that the rhythm can be identified for what it is.

infestation during the winter, eggs could still be embedded deep in their coats. Next, while they’re gone, clean the entire house -- top to bottom. This means moving the furniture and cleaning underneath it, as well as taking down all linens and curtains and washing them. Treat the carpets and upholstery with a nontoxic flea stopper (available at pet stores). Vacuum thoroughly and discard the vacuum cleaner bag once you’re done. Throughout the remainder of the warm months -- well into October -- you will need to maintain a regular flea-prevention schedule. Your cats must be treated for fleas regularly with a treatment recommended by your veterinarian; don’t let this lapse. If the cats spend time outside, you must brush them each time they come in to dislodge anything that attached to their coats. Vacuum the carpets and furniture at least once a week, and wash all linens regularly so fleas don’t settle in and lay their eggs.

The booklet on heartbeat irregularities describes the more common kinds of these beats and how they are treated. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 107W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: None of my 21 grandchildren has had their tonsils out. All of my seven children did. Is this no longer done? I wish doctors would make up their minds about these things. -- B.B. ANSWER: When your children were young, it was almost standard practice to remove tonsils as a way to protect against strep throat. We now know this isn’t necessary, and we now have antibiotics to treat strep throat. Children who have repeated strep throat infections still have their tonsils removed, but the operation is no longer done for prevention. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My husband and I take Lipitor. We take it before dinner in the evening. We eat half a grapefruit after breakfast. Is that OK? -- M.L. ANSWER: You can take Lipitor any time of the day, and you can take it with or without food. It’s one of the statin drugs -- the drugs that are such effective cholesterol-lowerers. Grapefruit and Lipitor are not a good combination. Grapefruit can increase the blood concentration of this drug. It does the same with a few other medicines. This effect of grapefruit lasts for 24 hours, so even letting 12 hours pass before taking the drug after eating grapefruit doesn’t lessen the chance of this interaction occurring.

~SAVED MY LIFE~ This week I had the pleasure of meeting a group of people who demonstrate their passion for enriching the lives of those in their care everyday. In this week’s edition of Making a Difference, I would like to introduce our readers to the people of Evergreen Fountains. Evergreen Fountains offers enhanced senior living in a community environment at their Valley location. But I’ll be honest, this is not just another senior living facility, but instead a group of people dedicated to providing their senior residents a higher quality of life. This past week, the people of Evergreen Fountains were kind enough to allow me a tour of their aquatic and fitness center. Patti Hunter, Evergreen’s Wellness Coordinator, gave me a delightful tour of their fitness center while allowing me to interact with some of the local residents where I witnessed what Patti had shared with me about providing their residents “guided encouragement in exercise to promote healthy lifestyles and a fuller enjoyment of life.” I learned about the many programs Evergreen Fountains offers to their residents in the way of aquatic fitness, regular fitness, and general resident wellness. Programs range from a water fit class, water walking, Sit ‘n Fit, walking club, to a Fall Reduction Series, all of which are geared to meet the goal of “Health-N-Motion” for their residents. What is truly amazing is that Evergreen offers these activities and programs free, as a regular part of their community, as well a fun and safe environment to exercise and improve their overall health and quality of life. During my visit to Evergreen Fountains, I met one of the residents named Leonard. It was at this point in my visit where I truly understood the value of what the staff at Evergreen are doing for their residents. Leonard explained that the programs and exercise facilities offered by Evergreen SAVED HIS LIFE after a recent heart attack. In fact, Leonard’s doctor told him that he believed his full recovery was due to Leornard’s exercise program and commitment to exercising regularly. Equally encouraging was what Evergreen Fountains Certified Trainer, Heather Appleton said: “Leonard was back in the exercise room within 2-weeks of his heart attack.” Quite frankly, Leonard’s experience and the benefits gained by many other residents who take advantage of the wellness center at Evergreen Fountains is due in large part to the caring staff members like Patti Hunter and Heather Appleton. I was witness to how much these two ladies care about the residents, how they desire to get involved in their lives, and how much gratification they gain from seeing the residents improve their lifestyles in the later years of their lives. I was truly blessed by being able to meet the residents and staff at Evergreen and I would personally recommend them to my own family...written by p.jgo.
