New Exhibitions this Autumn Valhalla: In Search of the Viking Dead
10.00am – 5.00pm | 10 Coppergate | Admission included in your ticket to any of the JORVIK Group attractions, otherwise £2.50 adult, £1.50 conc, £1 child. Exhibition ends 4th November. Created in association with York Minster and the Manx Museum, Isle of Man, Valhalla explores Viking burials throughout the British Isles. Investigate the commemoration and burial rites of the Viking age, from pagan boat burials, through ornately carved headstones, to Christian inhumations. This brand new exhibition explores the mythology and artistry of the Norse world and, using objects excavated in York, exposes the melting-pot of culture that York became in the 9th to 11th centuries.
From Hamlet to Hollywood: A Royal Celebration
10.00am – 5.00pm (11.00am - 5.00pm from 5th November) Barley Hall | Normal admission prices apply. Barley Hall’s stunning exhibition of historic costumes from the movies now includes clothing worn by Keira Knightly and Ralph Fiennes in The Duchess, Rhys Ifans in Anonymous, and Kathy Bates as Queen Victoria in Around the World in 80 Days. Also on display is the costume worn by Johnny Depp in From Hell and four costumes from The King’s Speech, including that worn by the young Elizabeth II.

10.00am – 4.00pm (11.00am - 3.00pm from 5th November) Micklegate Bar Museum | Normal admission prices apply New for the year of the Diamond Jubilee, this exhibition looks at the ceremonial role played by Micklegate Bar in welcoming ruling monarchs and other members of the royal family to the city over the centuries. See archive video footage, hear dramatised accounts and explore some of the extraordinary tales of pomp and pageantry witnessed at the Bar over the years.
Looking Back at Hungate
10.00am – 5.00pm | DIG | Normal admission prices apply. Visit DIG for a unique opportunity to see some of its archaeological treasures displayed together for the first time. From Roman grave goods and Viking craftsmanship, through to medieval life and Victorian industry, this innovative new exhibition uses artefacts to tell the story of a changing city landscape.
Gladiators: A Cemetery of Secrets

See six skeletons that have excited controversy and debate ever since their discovery by YAT archaeologists. All died a violent death in Roman York. But who were they? It’s up to you to review the evidence and decide! All these exhibitions are free to visit with a YAT Pass. The YAT Pass is a yearly pass that enables unlimited free admission to all of The JORVIK Group attractions.

Join YAT Battlefield Officer Russell Marwood to tour these two evocative and unspoilt sites, the first the place where the rebellious Earl of Hereford met an unpleasant end, the second the scene of the destruction of the ‘White Chapter’ by the Scottish veterans of Bannockburn. Join YAT Battlefield Officer Russell Marwood to tour the site where Harald Hardrada’s Vikings clashed with the men of York on 20th September 1066, in a notorious and bloody encounter that marked the beginning of the end of the Viking Age in England. The Star Carr Festival
10:00am – 4:00pm | Woodend Creative Centre, Scarborough, YO11 2PW | FREE An exciting event for families that will bring Star Carr, Yorkshire’s most amazing Stone Age site, and the occupants of the “oldest house in Britain” to life. The event will include Mesolithic tales from storyteller Ben Haggerty, handling real Stone Age artefacts, activities such as making fish traps and wearing head-dresses and lectures by Dr Nicky Milner on Star Carr and the Mesolithic (www.starcarr.com). Meet the Victorian Cook at Mansion House
11.00am – 4.00pm | York Mansion House £5 adult, £4 concession, £3 child A rare opportunity to gain access to the Mansion House kitchens and witness the Victorian Cook in full swing. Cooking dishes from the Georgian and Victorian heyday of Mansion House, she’ll be demonstrating the arts of cookery, as well as giving tips and tidbits about food in times past. The cook will be portrayed by Annie Gray, a food historian who appears regularly on television as well as acting as a consultant to heritage sites across the UK. Monday 24th September Valhalla: In Search of the Viking Dead

Tuesday 25th September Dr Andrew ‘Bone’ Jones Food Demonstration
2.00pm, | Demonstrations Area - St Sampson’s Square | FREE Join Dr Andrew ‘Bone’ Jones for a ‘nutty professor’s’ view of food through the ages - with his shopping trolley packed with produce, ‘Bone’ is going to look back at the food we could and and could not get in ages gone by. Explore archaeological methods of examining historical diets by investigating poo – this is sure to be a fascinating, if somewhat different, addition to this year’s Food Festival programme!
Thursday 27th September A Taste of History: Jorvik Roaming Supper
Starts 6.00pm | JORVIK Viking Centre | £38 Enjoy a very special evening of sumptuous & hearty locally-sourced food along with exclusive after-hours access to 3 of our fantastic attractions! 1000 years ago when York was under Viking rule, great celebrations and festivities took place in February called ‘Jolablot’ to herald the coming of spring and the survival of winter hardships. These celebrations were long forgotten until the 1980s when York Archaeological Trust revived Jolablot, creating the biggest Viking Festival in Great Britain. Now celebrating its 28th year, the JORVIK Viking Festival is bigger than ever involving partners from across Yorkshire driving over 40,000 visitors to the city of York, Viking re-enactors from across Europe and media interest from around the world.
