Little Diggers is for all those who like to dig, delve and discover for themselves all about objects and stories from the past. Aimed at children aged 2 to 5 years the session takes place in our dedicated early years’ area and creates a safe and relaxed space for children to play and explore. Sessions begin at 10.30am on Saturday morning and refreshments are available on site. Special discounts are available for children who join our ‘Little Diggers’ club. Saturday 5th April Spring has sprung and we are going on a garden safari! Little Diggers Easter Adventures: Spring Safari DIG | £3 per child Spring has sprung and we are going on a garden safari! This fun Springtime story and play session is aimed at children aged 2-5, and there will be animals to spot, flowers to find and games to play. You can even have a go at some seasonal crafts!

Saturday 12th April Little Diggers Easter Adventures: Making Memories DIG | £3 per child How do you remember the fun things you have done? This session we are celebrating JORVIK’s 30th birthday and looking back on all the exciting things that have happened in our past. As part of our special 2-5 years learn and play session we will be hosting a range of activities exploring how we save our memories using diaries and photographs, and dressing up in the costume of the past!

Saturday 19th April Little Diggers Easter Adventures: Victorian Easter Fair DIG | £3 per child Step back in time and experience all the fun of the fair! Our Victorian Fair will visiting DIG for one day only, for this special Easter play and craft session aimed at 2-5 year olds. Have a go at classic fairground games and make your own Victorian toy to take home. Can you win at the hoopla or bean bag toss?

10:00am - 5:00pm | Wentworth Castle, Barnsley S75 3EN | £30 Join staff from ArcHeritage, the Sheffield unit of York Archaeological Trust, for this hands-on introduction to surveying techniques and other elements of archaeology practice. Please be aware that this event will include a walk of approx. 2 hours. Outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear essential. Bring a packed lunch. Pre-booking essential.

12:00 - 14:00 | DIG | FREE It is an exciting time for Yorkshire as the county welcomes the Tour De France in July, so come along to this artist-led session and contribute to a larger piece! It can be anything at all, from images of rolling hills to embroidered Yorkshire pudding and can be painted, drawn, written whatever you like! Sessions are free of charge but places are limited due to space so please pre-book to avoid disappointment.

Hear from YAT archaeologist Kurt Hunter-Mann on the excavations that uncovered over 60 ‘gladiator’ burials in York and find out how they can tell us so much about Roman attitudes to death and the afterlife.

Wear outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear, and be prepared to walk long distances on uneven surfaces and to cross some busy roads. Wednesday 9th, 16th & 28th The Barley Hall Servants - Living History at the Hall 11 am - 3pm | Barley Hall | Normal admission prices apply Volunteers from the Barley Hall Servants will be offering an extra treat for visitors today, with living history showcasing the life of servants from the late medieval period. Expect to see costumed displays and demonstrations giving a rare glimpse of social history brought to life in a fantastic setting.

Monday 14th Happy Birthday JORVIK! JORVIK Viking Centre | Usual opening hours and prices apply Come and join us for a very special Birthday celebration as JORVIK Viking Centre turns 30! Vikings will be setting up camp in Coppergate and we’ll be marking the day with activities, presents, balloons and Birthday cake! Once you’re inside experience JORVIK Alive! where real Vikings will be inhabiting the Viking streets of York and taking you back in time.

Saturday 19th The Lord Mayor’s Easter Egg Hunt 10:00 – 13:00 (participants to start no later than 12 noon) Collect your treasure sheet from JORVIK | £2 Set out from JORVIK Viking Centre on a city-wide quest for chocolate – solve the puzzles to visit seven locations around York, with a treat at each stop and a special prize when you reach your final destination!

Wednesday 7th & 14th Introduction to Digital Photogrammetry - 2 week course 7:00pm | Walkley Library, Sheffield, S6 3TD | £15 Marcus Abbott of ArcHeritage presents two introductory sessions to the techniques and applications of digital photogrammetry in archaeology, with pointers and advice to get you started on your own projects in 3D reconstruction using a digital camera. Please be advised that you will need to attend both two-hour sessions. Pre-booking essential.

Friday 16th DIG After Dark 18:00 - 21:00 | DIG | Normal Admissions Costs Apply Come and see the wild side of archaeology at DIG After Dark at this Museums at Night event. Grab a trowel and join in with the fun! Explore the dig pits finding clues and secrets that will lead you on an adventure through the attraction; with games and crafts that will take you into our secret DIG garden for some torch lit excitement!

Wednesday 28th Medieval Craft & Mystery Tour 2.30pm | Start from Micklegate Bar | £4 adult, £3 conc. By the late fourteenth century the celebration of the feast of Corpus Christi in York had developed into a series of religious pageants acted out by the guilds of York and drawn around the city on carts. An annual event for almost 200 years, these evolved into the modern Mystery Plays. Join author Nicky Rogers to follow the same route taken by the wagons over 600 years ago. Sturdy footwear and outdoor clothing recommended. Pre-booking essential.

Wednesday 18th Eoforwic to Jorvik: Understanding Anglian & Viking Age Urban Development 19:00 | DIG | £4 adult, £3 conc This talk from Mark Whyman of York Archaeological Trust talk consider what the evident differences in the location, layout and form of Anglian and Viking Age settlement at York from the 8th - 10th centuries AD, might tell us about how these successive ‘urban’ sites functioned, and - perhaps - why one became the other. Project Director, Peter Connelly, presents an illustrated talk on the Hungate dig, the largest excavation in the history of York, and the archaeological evidence that it provided for the extent and layout of the Viking city of Jorvik.

Monday 23rd York In the Reign of Richard 14:30 | Start from JORVIK Viking Centre | £6 Adult, £5 Conc. Join Dr Chris Tuckley for a guided tour of the Micklegate Quarter and part of the city walls, highlighting the sights of the York landscape in the reign of Richard III.
