Medieval Merriment 4th & 5th August

Medieval Market 4th & 5th August

Enjoy living history as you shop for unique gifts and home-wares, plus enjoy traditional wine and ales at the bar. Barley Hall is a stunning medieval townhouse, located on the doorstep of York Minster. Once home to the Mayor of York, the building has been lovingly restored to its original splendour with stunning high ceilings, beautiful exposed timber frames and possibly the only horn window in England. Royal Gateway Exhibition 4th August onwards

10.00 – 16.00 daily Micklegate Bar | Normal admission prices apply New for the year of the Diamond Jubilee, this exhibition looks at the ceremonial role played by Micklegate Bar in welcoming ruling monarchs and other members of the royal family to the city over the centuries. See archive video footage, hear dramatised accounts and explore some of the extraordinary tales of pomp and pageantry witnessed at the Bar over the years. Behind the Scenes: Digging for Secrets! 6th – 10th August

FREE to York City Residents As part of the very first archaeological dig at York’s Guildhall, the Medieval Festival will offer visitors the chance of a behind the scenes tour of this important and significant site. Visitors will get the chance to tour the exploratory dig at Common Hall Lane with a member of YAT, meet the archaeologists, see recent finds as they are documented and enjoy digital visualisations of the ‘secret street’ before it became buried beneath the city! York Libraries’ Big City Read: Jester Laugh 7th August

Accompanied Children under 16 FREE Join us on a stroll around the city of York with archaeologist and author Gareth Dean and military historian Russell Marwood. We will be looking at the great religious houses and Guild Halls of York, together with the dwellings of the rich and not so rich inhabitants of the medieval city – with the odd ghost story thrown in for good measure! Living History at the Hall 8th August

10.00 – 14.00 | Barley Hall Normal admission prices apply Barley Hall volunteers will be offering an extra treat for visitors today with living history showcasing the life of servants from the late-medieval period at the Hall. With characters to meet, demonstrations to see and crafts to participate in, this is a rare glimpse of social history brought to life in a fantastic setting.

York Guildhalls with Dr Kate Giles 9th August

FREE to York City Residents In the first of our lectures accompanying the first archaeological dig at York Guildhall, Dr Kate Giles a buildings archaeologist with a specialism in the recording, archival research and theoretical interpretation of historic buildings, will be giving a talk about the York Guildhalls. As Director of the MA in Archaeology of Buildings at the University of York, and York Minster Archaeology Research Fellow, Kate is passionate about the potential of buildings archaeology and history to enhance understanding of the significance of historic buildings, and to inform their management, interpretation and display to the wider public, and this is sure to be an illuminating talk on a very apt subject matter in this 800th year of the freedom of the city. Medieval Church Open Day with Dr Chris Tuckley 10th August

11.00 – 15.00 | St Helen’s Church, Bilton-in-Ainsty FREE, donations to the Church are welcomed A rare opportunity to see inside this beautiful church, home to treasures of pre-conquest sculpture, mysterious Anglo-Norman carvings and the ‘Bilton worm’, a strange relic of the Battle of Marston Moor. ‘A Panorama of mediaeval York’ with Peter Stanhope 10th August

FREE to York City Residents In the second of our two lectures accompanying the very first archaeological dig at York Guildhall, popular local historian Peter Stanhope gives an illustrated talk on A Panorama of medieval York by the Victorian/Edwardian Artist Edwin Ridsdale Tate. Using digital imaging technology Peter will explore the medieval City through this epic work by this well-known York artist and tell the story behind its creation almost 100 years ago. The talk will also be supported by other images of York’s medieval buildings by “ERT” from Mr Stanhope’s extensive collection. Pre-booking essential: 01904 615505

The Society for Creative Anachronism at Barley Hall 11th August

10.00 – 16.30 | Barley Hall Normal admission prices apply The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is an international organisation aimed at recreating elements of life during the Middle Ages. Members’ interests and skills cover a variety of fields such as combat, cooking, art and entertainment. The SCA was set up for group mentoring and support in medieval research up to the 17th century and today is a great opportunity to see the group in action, demonstrating their many skills for the public. Come along to Barley Hall to see them in this superb medieval town house setting and have a chat with the local branch.
