SUSTAINABLE I
FASHION By SHARON JANE @sharon.js
ncreasingly, the blue and green planet we call home has been reminding us how important it is to take care of it and what the consequences are when we don’t. Beloved forests are being diminished, oceans contaminated, and species harmed. Therefore, people have progressively begun to take action by living a more sustainable lifestyle that immensely benefits the environment. What is a “sustainable” lifestyle? A sustainable lifestyle consists of making minor changes in our daily routines that can make an enormous impact to the betterment of our planet. Composting, using reusable items, reducing the usage of plastic objects, switching from paper bills and receipts to electronic ones, gardening, and unplugging power strips at night are some of the many things we can do that will surely have a healing effect (and it will be kind to your wallet, as well!). More specifically, in an industry like fashion where the term “fast fashion” exists and is greatly feared, making it more sustainable would be a major step forward for our environment. Amazing brands like Mate the Label, H&M, Reformation, Stella McCartney, and Mara Hoffman have been sustainable fashion pioneers and are setting a grand example of techniques and changes other brands could and should make.
H&M
QP
40
MATE THE LABEL
California-based, they bring the cool factor in the most simple and minimalistic way with comfy sets, timeless basics, and statement tees. This label most importantly values sustainable and ethical production by partnering with nearby factories (within a 5-mile radius), producing each item sold in small batches, and using non-toxic and organic fabrics and materials in everything they make.
H&M
H&M is certainly a global powerhouse when it comes to producing a huge variety of affordable and stylish clothes. It is important to also note that they value sustainability and are so dedicated to being a patron of it as well. Aside from fulfilling yearly improvements in more sustainable production and fabrication methods, H&M also has a collection named “Conscious” that is solely made with a sustainable method. Some of these methods include the use of organic materials like cotton, sustainable production methods that reduce carbon footprint, using recycled materials like polyester, and making garments with materials from the tons of clothes that are donated to H&M. According to www.independent.ie, H&M collected 20,649 tons of clothing in 2018. It’s also pretty cool knowing that when you bring clothes you don’t need anymore to your local H&M, you will receive a 15% discount on your next purchase for every bag you bring in! These garments are then reworn (as second-hand goods), reused (cleaning cloths, etc.), or recycled (fibers are used to make other garments and products).

QP
REFORMATION
This particular brand is straightforwardly and incredibly passionate in creating beautiful clothing that also heals the planet. Reformation is known for constantly creating contemporary clothes that fit the vast variety of shapes and sizes that women wonderfully have. So, not only will you look good but feel good because you will know the amount of care that each garment has for you and the planet you live in.
STELLA McCARTNEY
Stella McCartney has been setting the bar high when it comes to designer brands becoming conscious. This brand has been implementing sustainable fabrics and production techniques into their garments more and more. One of the materials Stella McCartney has mastered is cashmere, which virgin cashmere is known for being one of the most valuable fabrics yet the most environmentally damaging. Therefore, regenerated cashmere is used which greatly reduces the existence of harmful raising environments for animals and increases the existence of healthy grasslands. Additionally, Stella also uses faux fur, vegetarian leather, and cruelty-free wool and silk, which are all animal and environment-friendly. The magnificence of Stella McCartney is that this is only the beginning of the numerous ways this brand operates sustainably and it is dedicated to continue improving and inspiring change.

MARA HOFFMAN
Beautiful, timeless and quality: these were the 3 words that came to mind when I first discovered this brand. Every garment is carefully and consciously made with organic, recycled or regenerated fabrics, materials, and dyes. It is incredibly inspiring to see how dedicated Mara Hoffman is in also creating safe and ethical working environments which are immensely contrary to the working environments fast fashion provokes. They are also dedicated to finding ways on how to decrease carbon footprint, using engineered digital printing, and creating artisan groups support among the many philanthropic actions they fulfill. Additionally, it was interesting to see a helpful guide on how to wash and care for their garments in a most sustainable, quality prolonging, and effective way. This guide can be seen here: https://www.marahoffman.com/world-of/our-approach/wear-more-wash-less/
This is truly just touching the surface of the multiple sustainable fashion brands that exist out there that are fulfilling their social responsibility in taking care of you, nature and the environment. I could honestly go on for hours talking to you about all of these sustainable fashion pioneers. As for now, here are some more inspiring sustainable brands you should check out: Patagonia, Rag & Bone, Misha Nonoo, BITE, Boyish Jeans, Bethany Williams, Tretorn, Allbirds, Alice Early, Kitx, Gabriela Hearst, Amur, Ninety Percent, Lark & Berry, Nak, Bottletop, Tome, People Tree, Good News, Simon Miller, Edun, Veja, Phine, and soooo much more!!

W
hat do you love most about your exciting, yet less than conventional career? I love that I can always follow my passions with support behind me. I am able to try new things and as long as I am being honest, open, and true to myself, I get massive support. It is so much fun being able to make things that are normally seen as hobbies, a real job. When you love what you do, you never work a day in your life.
Your career began on YouTube, what do you value most about your journey to actress/model/entrepreneur now fashion designer? Starting out on YouTube, I was just a girl who had big dreams. I had no idea my YouTube channel would actually get me here, but I always have dreamt of becoming who I am now. I love that I was able to share online all of the things I dreamt of and then actually manifested it into my life. I am now what the little girl who started MakeupbyMandy24 wanted to be when she grew up, not even knowing it was a possibility. I am just so proud of how far I’ve come and how I’m living out my dreams.
Tell us about your clothing line, STEELE: How would you describe the signature style of your collections?
Most people might not know how much you have to design and prep ahead of time. I am always finishing up a collection while I am working on the next two. The process takes a while so you have to always be ahead.
What does fashion mean to you? Fashion to me means a physical representation of a feeling. I love fashion because I can change up my look and style depending on how I feel. Wearing looks that match how I am feeling on the inside is really fun to show the world. Walking out in an outfit that represents how you feel is so empowering to me. It’s a way to set an initial judgment of who I might be to the world. Certain styles radiate a vibe to others that I love having control over.
“I am just so proud of how far I’ve come and how I’m living out my dreams."
I would describe STEELE as an overall sophisticated but cool girl. This brand really embodies the vibe of not just my style, but personality. STEELE makes me and those who wear it feel sexy, confident, and smart. My favorite looks are ones where I feel like a professional but fun girl at the same time. I feel like a lot of my pieces are gender neutral and I think it’s just super sick to feel masculine and feminine at the same time. I notice and embrace those two sides to me and this brand shows you can be both!
47
What is one thing most people would not know about what goes into creating a clothing line?
Tell us about your first encounter with fashion. What about it stayed with you?
I just remember playing dress up as a kid. I am the type of person who likes to stand out and I think when I would put on dress up clothes as a kid I felt like I was playing a character. It was just so fun for me to play with looks that brought out different sides of me. I loved seeing certain looks, imagining what kind of person would wear these things, and decide what style it was I wanted to show to the world.
As an influencer, what would you say is your message to your audience? My message to my audience is to be yourself regardless of social norms and follow your heart. I have always been open about going through phases, finding myself, and just doing what you dream of even if it seems impossible. I believe I am a powerful, successful woman image to my followers encouraging them to be a boss and to live for yourself. I try to express that you can be whatever you want to be and to never give up on your dreams.

What advice would you give to an aspiring influencer and entrepreneur in the fashion industry? The advice I would give to an aspiring influencer and entrepreneur in the fashion industry would be to find what makes you special and embrace it. It is easy to compare yourself and try to follow the path that others have taken, but the only way to make it is to show what makes you different. It is important to find your personal style and embrace that. There are so many influencers and so many fashion brands that if you’re not offering something different, there is no incentive to choose yours. Being able to nail a style that is exclusive to who you are or what your brand is, is key to making success.
Where do you find inspiration for your daily style? For STEELE?
My go-to makeup look is glowy bronzed skin, browns on my eyes, thick brows, and a matte mauve colored lip.
What trend will you never get tired of? I will never get tired of the all black trend! I know wearing all black was a trend but I will always feel comfortable and chic in an all black outfit.
What is your favorite beauty trick? Favorite fashion trick?
“I will always feel comfortable and chic in an all black outfit”
I have always found style inspiration from the internet. I love just scrolling and saving styles I resonate with on Instagram or Pinterest. I know what brands I love and are similar to my style, so always checking those and their archive pieces to inspire me every day. After looking through lots of inspiration photos, I will have them in the back of my mind. While picking out my own looks or creating for STEELE, I can mash together vibes I love from other brands and what I feel most me in. No one’s brand or style will match me completely, so when I am open to taking inspiration from lots of different places and adding my own to it, I feel really stylish and unique.
What do you think are the best and worst colors to wear? I think the best color to wear is black. I believe everyone looks good in black and choosing black over another color will always look best. Black is just clean, simple, sophisticated and also edgy! I can’t say there's a worst color to wear, because I am always open to new trends and looks even outside my comfort zone.
QP
What is your go-to makeup look?
My favorite beauty trick out of the normal would be using a hydrating balm like Aquaphor as a highlighter. It’s a nice way to add glow and shine to your face without having harsh powder or sparkles. My favorite fashion trick is throwing a pair of heels on a super casual outfit. I think its easy and super cool to just add a pair of pumps to even a sweatsuit to look put together in an instant.
What designers most inspire you and why? I am inspired aesthetically by Alexander Wang, Vivian Westwood, Helmut Lang, Celine, YSL, Margiela and many more!
What look do you hate to see at fashion events? Love to see? I can’t hate any look at fashion events because I appreciate everyone’s self-expression through style. I only sometimes don’t love seeing people do too much. A lot of times people are going over the top to be noticed, different, or fashionable when it sometimes comes off tacky. I understand if this is your personal style, I love that! But, if you’re new to the game and throwing on everything that is stereotypical for a “fashion show” you’ll stand out in not the best way. Do you, rock what makes you feel comfortable, express yourself, but fashion is not about trying to fit in. I do absolutely love seeing people wearing things that could be seen as crazy or unusual but you can just tell that is who they are and that is their style! They rock it unapologetically and that makes me so happy to see.

How do you manage your social media personality to your mainstream life?
If you could back, what would you tell your 10-year-old self?
It is a very blurred line of social media personality and my real life especially living in LA surrounded by everyone who does the same. When I am having intimate moments with people I like to keep that private and not have my phone out. But if things make sense for good content, I will capture it to show my followers. The difference in who I am in person versus online is just that online is more filtered. I am aware of who is watching and what content people want to see, so it will at times be a little bit more bubbly and colorful than who I am in person. Sometimes it’s weird when my friends watch my videos in front of me because who I am online is a certain part of Amanda who is talking to a different group of people than my personal friend group. Everything is still me, but online I just know what people I am talking to and a lot of times it is different than those in my personal life.
I would tell my 10-year-old self to not let anyone tell you what you should or should not be doing creatively. I was insecure before and let comments online shape who I was on the internet and where I was headed with my career. If I had just ignored the hate and continued doing what my heart told me to do, I think would be even farther in my career than I am now. I also wish I could tell my 10-year-old self that she is special and unique and that I don’t need to be like anyone else in order to be cool or liked.
What do you value most about your online presence? I value that my online presence is not built around the scandal. I find most people that have a type of following I do sell out a bit in order to get attention. I truly am online as Amanda Steele and those who follow me get that. I love that I am known from my achievements and success over the years rather than dating someone or being friends with someone. I like that I represent a self-made woman.
Final Words: What is one thing you want to say to our readers: I would like to tell QP´s readers to never give up! Anything in this world is possible if you put your mind to it. Life gets discouraging and sometimes you get low thinking there is no way you can ever achieve your dreams. With a POSITIVE attitude and hard work, I promise you will see growth. Nothing will happen overnight, but if you can constantly move forward and always believe in what you’re doing, you’re going to get somewhere. It is important to know what you’re chasing, though. Make sure you dig deep into yourself and find what you really want out of life and stay true to that.

H
ow did you both start in fashion?
Hila: You can say I was born with it! My father was a shoe designer and from a very early age, I was exposed to designs, patterns, hand craftsmanship and the whole world that surrounds the making of a garment from start to end. Kristian: I always had a strong passion for creating things with my hands and imagination. With I a tailoring background I graduated with an MA in Womenswear at the Royal College of Art in London.
What is your favorite part of being a fashion designer? Hila: There are so many elements to the joy of being a fashion designer. The biggest reward is to see the process of how the garment begins to unfold from the initial idea and inspiration to then seeing it walking down the runway when it comes to life. My biggest reward is as a female designer I get to also wear my design, which means that I get to express myself even further by floating my creation, wherever I go. Kristian: I love the process of creation from an idea to the final product and then it makes it fulfilling seeing beautiful women wearing and falling in love with those creations.
What inspires you to create amazing collections season after season?
Hila: To be honest, everyone that we have dressed so far has been such an amazing ambassador of the brand that I couldn’t say I have a favorite!
Who is still on your wish list to dress? Hila: So many…
Where do you see yourselves in the next ten years? Hila: Making AADNEVIK into a big fashion house.
for Addison? If you could go back in time and tell yourself one thing before beginning your career what would it be? Hila: Be Patient! Everything you dream of will come through just wait for its right moment to manifest.
“The AADNEVIK woman is strong"
Hila: For me, the biggest inspiration is LIFE! Taking my upbringing and past experiences, good and bad into who I am today allows me to create depth, softness, beauty and strength in one garment. Having family and children definitely softens the way I look at life and add a dimension of innocence to my creative process.
How would you define the AADNEVIK woman? Hila: For me, as a woman, I would probably have much more to say as it’s a transition through experiences that makes you who you are and what you stand for. When I design something, I always design it first for myself, you must be a strong woman in this world to fight for what you believe you deserve. The AADNEVIK woman is a strong woman who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to move mountains to achieve it. 83
Who has been your favorite talent to dress?
How is working in fashion different today compared to when you started out? Hila: We started the AADNEVIK brand in 2013 which isn’t so far from today. Things have definitely evolved since but not in such a drastic way. For sure, our experiences in running our own label have gotten more sophisticated and knowledgeable. fit in” based on what she was taug ht as a child, but she soon real-

Hila: They don’t look elsewhere! hen did you first know you wanted to become an actress? I knew when I was 6 years old. My parents took me to see Phantom of the Opera and I was captivated. I knew then I wanted to be a performer! What is one of your favorite memories from growing up in Honolulu, Hawaii? Spending every Sunday night with my family at my grandparent's house, eating Hawaiian food and playing in the warm summer nights. Beach days...picnics. I miss my family there the most! What was it like to hear you’d been cast as Mona Vanderwaal on Freeform’s Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists? Amazing. I was so sad to have to leave her behind and so relieved when I learned I didn’t have to. We are having too much fun creating another layer of Mona and the show! What three words would you use to describe your Mona? Intriguing, mysterious, ridiculous. What are your favorite films? Do you have any favorite directors?
How would you say working on the theatrical Broadway stage is different from working in the bustling television industry? How are they the same? The stage is 2 hours happening in real time. Everything, every emotion is live and raw and REAL. You go through the experience right there and you feel the audience’s energy as they’re there with you. It’s unlike any other feeling to perform live! But TV and film are amazing in completely different ways. You get the chance to get the scenes right...to perfect it before you leave and give your all. It’s amazing to feel the energy on set and see how it truly takes a village to construct a show or film before it gets shown. Who was your biggest role model growing up? Growing up they were Broadway legends! Lea Salonga and Barbara Streisand were two that I admired and listened to every day. Barbara did film and musicals which inspired me!
"I want to constantly learn and evolve."
I needed to do to try.
What was it like moving from an island paradise to L.A. at just 14? What’s crazy is it didn’t feel crazy. It felt like something I needed to do. Of course, I missed it when I was gone and I still do. It’s hard leaving family and friends and starting a new life somewhere. But I never doubted it’s what
Oh yes! Baz Luhrmann is my absolute favorite. Moulin Rouge will always be my favorite film! I also love Tarantino films. Inglorious Bastards is one of my favorites and a masterpiece. I just love films, I could go on and on!
What do you do in your spare time to destress?
How have you grown as an actor since you were first cast as Mona in 2010?
How did you meet your husband?
I hope a lot. I like to think with each experience, you grow and add more tools to the toolbox. I want to constantly learn and evolve. It’s one reason I love working on roles completely different from Mona when I’m not playing her. I love the challenge.

Hang with my family, friends and husband. Take trips to quiet and beautiful places. Cook, get outdoors, go back to the things I miss when I’m gone working. We met through our friends who are dating! They both were our childhood friends :)

Do you have any warm-up rituals you do before shooting scenes? I just make Sasha Pieterse go over the scenes with me a lot so I can get out the words haha
What is your skincare routine? Very strict! My husband calls it “goo”. I have a face wash, then a toner, active serum, eye cream and moisturizer!
How would you describe your personal style? Casual chic. I’m usually dressed pretty basic but with some fun boots or purses!
What secrets can you spill about the upcoming sequel to Netflix’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before? You guys are gonna get a good love triangle ;)

TRAVEL
CROATIA BY VALENTINA SOLCI @valentinasolci

C
roatia is a Mediterranean gem filled with clear blue beaches, lush forests, a vast mountain terrain and a rich, historic culture. It can be found east of Italy, across the Adriatic Sea, and it shares borders with Slovenia in the west, Hungary in the north, Serbia in the east, and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the south. The clustered towns and popular areas open for first-time visitors are described by many as having a charming undertone and a medieval flare. Over the decades, Croatia has continued to attract tourists and European travelers its way, however, with the filming of the ever famous Game of Thrones, an HBO television series (where a portion of the show was filmed in Dubrovnik), Croatia has seen an increase in desirability from fans who are dedicated to the TV show. Aside from this series, many other popular TV and film productions have also chosen Croatia as their filming destination. Thus, the country has upheld and preserved its historical roots, all the while, enhancing its global presence across industries, like tourism (Croatia attracts about 10 million foreign visitors per year, according to Croatia.eu) and media.

The main language of Croatia is Croatian, but other minority languages include Serbian, Italian, and Czech. The Croatian Kuna is the official currency. The country has a total of nine airports, with the main airport being located inland. The capital and largest city of Croatia is Zagreb. It is found in the northwestern portion of the country, along the Sava River. Zagreb has a current population of about 1 million people and its geographic landscape is decently flat with a nearby mountain, called Medvednica, located about 10 miles away from the center. Some unique features of Zagreb include: the Dolac Market (or “the Belly of Zagreb”), one of the world’s safest transportation systems (specifically known as the funicular, an old-fashioned street car that connects the Upper Town with the Lower Town), it has been given the nickname of ‘the city of museums’ (because of its large amount of established museums), and the city has a surprisingly high population of street cats that roam around both the busy and quiet areas. Many of the other popular cities, such as Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar, and Pula, are all found along the coastline and in mountainous zones. Therefore, visitors of these cities can plan a hike, walk through the interior bulk of the city, and end the day with enchanting sunset views. Croatia’s high season lasts from June to August. During this summer period, the weather is sunny and
warm making it a great time for swimming, laying under the sun, and simply being outdoors. Most people crowd along towards the coastline in order to get the most of the beach town atmosphere, however, the inland areas of Croatia are also still marvelous to explore and compare to that of the winter months. With that said, Croatia’s low season lasts from October to April. During these months, beaches and water sport activities die down and many people, particularly locals, congregate to the interior areas of the country for ski trips, spa excursions, and other winter-like activities. The forest areas of Croatia are not the most popular regions of the country, but they do make up approximately 47% of the total land area. The forests are partially owned by the state and private organizations. Depending on the ownership, the forest may serve for different purposes such as commercial, protective, or special purpose usages. Plitvice Lakes National Park, however, is open for explorers to visit and is known for its lakes, alpine forests, waterfalls, caves, and hiking trails. Thus, for first-time tourists, and nature fanatics in general, this national park fulfills both a forest exploration and a hiking adventure. The central views of Plitvice National Park will leave you breathless. The vast greenery with the rushing streams of water falling across all platforms to meet in the giant, blue lake is so worth the hike up!

Since summer is soon approaching, one can’t think of having a European beach vacation without the classic cliff jumping spots. Three specific locations to check out for this are: Mala Kolombarica, Punta Verudela, and Galebove Stijene. At the first spot, Mala Kolombarica, which is easily accessible by car, visitors can enjoy the rocks and cliffs, underwater tunnels, and cave. Punta Verudela, the second spot, has diving ranges as low as a few centimeters and as high as 8 meters. It is located in vicinity to Cape Verudica (which has an accompanying lighthouse). All points at this spot are absolutely marvelous and will sure leave you in bliss. Lastly, Galebove Stijene (also known as “Seagull’s cliffs”) are located in a bay called Valovine (which is west from Pula). Galebove Stijene is excellent for adrenalin lovers because of the underwater world waiting to be discovered through its caves, holes, and underwater tunnels. One thing to keep in mind when going to Croatian beaches is the rarity of sandy shores. The majority of beaches consist of rocks and pebbles, adding to the uniqueness of the country’s shoreline. The following are a few beaches recommended by TimeOut. Gornja Vala, Gradac is the largest beach sitting along the Adriatic coast. It is found near the Makarska Riviera and has olive groves and pine trees grown throughout. The Pakleni Islands, Hvar have that “untouched” feel to them, calling the names of all nature and sea lovers. To reach the islands, one must journey over by taxi boat from the mainland. Views of the Pakleni Islands’ beaches from up above consist of light greenery on the hilltops, bright white sand beaches and a fusion of different shades of ocean blue. Zlatni Rat, Brac (also known as the Golden Cape or the Golden Horn) is one of Croatia’s most popular beaches because of its unique triangular shape, which stretches out to the Adriatic Sea, and is an ideal location for windsurfers. Bačvice, Split is a crowded, sand-based beach with a rich local presence. The beach is aligned with shops, cafés, and other dining options. This beach is always filled with activity and is great for those who want to interact with Croatian residents. Finally, Proizd, Vela Luka is an islet consisting of bathing areas. In order to get there, one must take a ferry from Split to Vela Luka, and, from there, take a taxi boat to Proizd. This islet attracts sunbathers, skinny-dippers, and snorkelers because of the four bathing areas (each divided by a five-minute walk) that are tiled with stone and the exclusiveness that the area encompasses. Over the years, Croatia’s nightlife and music scene has sky rocketed and globalized exponentially. That said, Deep Makarska and Aquarius are two well-known nightclubs and bars that have now attract international DJs and musicians from across the
QP
globe. Deep Makarska is located in the beach town of Makarska, which is filled with a nightlife scene. What makes this night club special is the fact that it is built into a natural cave. The bar is open during the daytime and nighttime hours. Visitors can choose to hang out inside the cave or lounge on the sunset terrace. In regards to Aquarius, this nightclub is found on the island of Pag. It is an open-aired club consisting of two dance floors and a pool area. The majority of artists that play at Aquarius focus on techno and electronic. Another major music event that happens yearly in Croatia is Ultra Music Festival (UMF). UMF is an annual festival that travels globally to the world’s top music hubs. UMF typically is hosted during the summer season, and, this year, will be taking place in Split, Brač, Hvar, and Vis. If you are not a big fan of the nightlife scene and would prefer a more relaxing and pampered experience, then I urge you to enjoy the many spas that Croatia has to offer. JEZERČICA and Istarske Toplice are two particular ones that focus on their thermal/mineral springs and saunas as key features of their spas. Regardless of how you choose to spend your time in Croatia, I am confident that you won't want to leave this magnificent Mediterranean country.

GAME OF THRONES - SEASON 8
I can’t wait (actually I have waited like all Game Of Thrones fans for years) for this final season. I am really excited to see how it all unfolds. I am sure it will be what we have come to expect, but I am sad it has not been completed by The Master, George Martin. Maybe it’s better this way because I would be completely crushed if John Snow was killed off. As all Game Of Thrones fans know in the original seasons and books we would all be shocked and destroyed when our heroes were killed off far too early for us to handle. Since HBO Showrunners took more and more control of the script they have thankfully kept our heroes alive. Expect Season 8 to answer many of our questions like, "Does winter finally arrive?" "What happens to Jon and Daenerys's relationship when they find out they are related?" "Will Arya use Littlefingers face?" And, "Will Tyrion ever find love?" Seriously, Season 8 will be awesome and well worth the watch.

HBO - LINEUP
I am really excited about HBO's new lineup and expect them to have a big 2019. Game Of Thrones brings us back, and The Deadwood Movie, Big Little Lies, and some great new shows like Euphoria, Watchmen and His Dark Materials will keep us turning to HBO as our new favorite channel. We can always count on HBO for creative new shows. Many of their original shows become sequels and prequels and movies but you have to give HBO a lot of credit for originality and being one of the first to bring us substantial shows available on television. HBO is not just TV--it is quality. Their shows have depth and class. If you’re new to HBO, make sure you catch up on some of their award-winning series: THE DEUCE BROADWALK EMPIRE CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM OZ DEADWOOD THE SOPRANOS SILICON VALLEY SEX AND THE CITY

RICHARD PEPLER
Other news with HBO is that Richard Plepler, who spent 27 years at the network, the last six at its head, announced his resignation last week. We are sorry to see you go and thank you for keeping HBO up to such a high standard. We understand that there is intense pressure on all networks to compete in this digital streaming world, but we hope Mr. Greenblatt, the new man in charge, will make the same effort to keep the integrity for which HBO is currently known. It was noticed that he is spending some energy in taking cheap shots at Netflix. Earlier this week, the new HBO boss, Bob Greenblatt, said Netflix "doesn't have a brand." Don’t do that. It cheapens HBO. Of course, Netflix has a strong brand. Their brand is that you never know what they are going to do next and they have no fear in their programming. They are exciting and fresh. HBO, you are a brand of substance and quality. HBO is above the fray and stands alone. All you need to do is continue to bring us shows like Game of Thrones and The Sopranos and you are in a class of your own.
NEWARK
One more exciting piece of news is The Many Saints of Newark (David Chase’s Sopranos prequel), which is now going by simply Newark, will premier on September 25, 2020. Another long wait but so worth it. We all want more Soprano adventures. Some really interesting casting too with James Gandolfini’s son, Michael Gandolfini, cast as the young Tony Soprano. This movie will be in the theatres and is sure to be a huge hit.
"It’s time for movie theatres to get creative to win back the movie lover rather than fight to crush creativity and access for all." 137
SPIELBERG VS NETFLIX
You heard it here first! An update on the Netflix/Steven Spielberg conflict… In my last column (a month ago), I mentioned two pieces of Netflix news that are now being reported by Fox. Is this becoming the column to read for the most updated and relevant Hollywood News? Taken from Fox… The Spielberg vs. Netflix Battle Could Mean Collateral Damage for Indies at the Oscars Post "Roma," the Academy will discuss rules that would level the playing field, but adjusting for Netflix could affect indie titles as well. Prepare for a heated battle. Also, while studios may have knives out for Netflix, the streaming behemoth isn’t their only concern. Other streamers are coming. Amazon Studios is changing its release parameters to a more flexible model; Disney +, AT&T, and Apple hover on the horizon. All will live and die on luring talent, and for them, the Oscars will be just as crucial. Fox also mentioned that The Irishman, the new Netflix film I recommended last month as an Oscar contender...was already being discussed as the movie to watch. Look for this controversy to become bigger as actors such as Helen Mirren join the battle. And I still want to understand more what Spielberg is doing with Netflix’s future competitor, Apple, while battling Netflix. Netflix is in for a battle, which I predict they will win. They may be breaking rules and barriers and hurting movie theatres profits but they are doing something good for the people and the entertainment industry in general. All people, not just the ones who have the money and access to go to the movie theater, can now watch great and substantial art at home. This is just competition at its best and competition is always a good thing for the people that the competitors are fighting for. Maybe they should take a lesson from Tyrion and Game Of Thrones: “ Must fight together now or die.” .
