INTERVIEW
KIERA
CHAPLIN SELF-MADE WOMAN
It’s a sunny Friday morning and we’re on set in Hollywood, Kiera has just stepped off a plane from Switzerland, her energy and enthusiasm at being back in LA post pandemic is electric. Kiera is in fact the Granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin, one of Hollywood’s most notable figures from the film industry, so we haven’t been short on possible shoot locations relating back to Charlie’s movie archives. However, Kiera’s biggest achievements are self-accomplished, having recently launched her own line of NFT’s, as well as a line of scarves and opened a school in West Africa to help underserved children of Sierra Leone and she isn’t stopping there …

aunching a line of NFT ’s i s b y no means an e as y challe nge , ho w d id you ge t into that world , a nd ca n you s hare with us a bit abou t t he m and why yours are s o u niq u e ?
B I had been hearing about NFT’s for the past few months and found that whole world fascinating. It is still so new, and you can be very creative and build whole worlds, not just a piece of art. Then I partnered up with ‘DIGITFULLY’ a platform that does a lot of NFT campaigns, I created a whole around my alter ego, a superhero that fights for injustices around the world. What is unique about my NFT’s is that they will be used to help causes and raise money for different charities. You will be playing a game and giving back to society. Given what you are doing with NFT’s, charity is clearly a large part of your make-up, was this something you were taught growing up in your family? This also naturally brings us onto the school you opened in West Africa, how did this come about and how are the children benefitting?
After working as a model for 20 years you develop a lot of contacts. I believe it’s about finding the right partners. Also, it’s about not being shy to ask for what you want. If you have a concept, don’t be afraid to reach out and ask people if they want to collaborate. What’s the worst that can happen? Like my acting teacher used to tell me: “relax, you’re not a neurosurgeon. No one is going to die if you mess up.” I try to use that philosophy to everything that I do.
“I think I got my love for fashion from my grandmother Oona.”
I think fighting for the underdog was always a very present theme while I was growing up. Be it through my grandfather’s films or simply knowing that I was lucky to be born where I was born, and that being kind and compassionate is a must. Over the years I had met many different charities but when I met Waris Dirie, founder of Desert Flower Foundation, it really hit a nerve. She started her foundation to fight against FGM (female genital mutilation) and being a big supporter of woman empowerment, I couldn’t think of anything more barbaric and messed up to do to a young girl. We had a long discussion about how to fight this in the long run and education is the best way. So, I joined forces and we have started building schools. We chose Sierra Leone to start as 70% of the population there cannot read or write. And there for the cycle of poverty is never ending, and girls will continue to be married off young without any choice.

Let’s talk about business and fashion, you have partnered with countless fashion labels, having created a sneaker, watch and scarf line all of which are available globally. As a businesswoman you must wear multiple hats to get something like this off the ground, please give us some insight into what it takes?
of her?
It’s been a while since you have been back in LA due to COVID, which stores will you be hitting up and what’s on your shopping list? Funnily enough I just went to get some See’s Candies and a Coffee Bean Vanilla Soy Latte … I want to check out Fred Segal, Beverly Hills and Robertson Blvd.
Your grandparents were known for throwing incredible dinner parties to Hollywood A-Listers at their house, and your grandmother Oona was quite the style icon. Did you get your style and love of fashion from her and please share some memories
Yes, I think I got my love for fashion from her. She always looked so glamorous in pictures and even when I would see her at home, she had a relaxed style, but it was still chic and unique. She also had a lot of beauty creams that I loved to try, as well as her shoes.
Ok, confession time, what’s been your biggest splurge on your closet, and we also want to know about your biggest fashion mistake, we’ve all been there! Fashion mistakes, unfortunately I can see many when I look at my old red carpet pics LOL! From racoon make-up to ugly dresses … as for my biggest splurge, it would probably be in bags or jewelry. But to be honest

I don’t buy supper expensive things as I get bored of clothes quite fast. So, I like to mix and match everything. But shoes and bags are my vice …
Fashion has been getting a terrible name for itself due to how pollutive it can be, is there something in the pipeline for Kiera that combines your philanthropic charitable angle that also marries in fashion? Not at the moment. Perhaps further down the line but now all I can do is to give my old clothes to the Salvation Army or consignment stores. I am fully aware about the many issues that surround fashion and what it does to the planet, I can’t single handedly fix this, but I support independent fashion houses and emerging talent instead. Some of my friends are designers and I have walked in their runways at Fashion Week and if I need something special, I will call on them.
You’ve been on the big screen a few times, having featured in “The Importance of being Earnest” amongst other movies, are there plans to do more of this and if so, who would you love to act alongside? I’ve been in a few movies, but it was never a passion of mine. I always preferred the fashion world but nowadays I’ve gotten into producing. I have two projects as an Executive Producer that I can’t wait to announce as they are going to be very cool projects (and I’m working with two of my favorite directors, can’t say more. Sorry!). GQ Magazine voted you the ‘17th Most Eligible Women in The World’, what affect did this have on
your love life and is there anyone special right now?
It was FHM who voted me 17th most eligible woman in the world. GQ voted me 7th sexiest in the world ;-) It’s flattering but most days you don’t feel like that. However, I do like to tease my boyfriends about it. You must see some changes in LA coming back after the last 2 years, what’s the most significant difference you’ve noticed?
I noticed a lot of new restaurants which have popped up in Hollywood as well as edgy artists which I really enjoyed seeing. I have been pretty much in back-to-back meetings and am only here for a short while, I haven’t had the opportunity to explore the city as much as I would have liked. My heart goes out to all the small businesses and family owned enterprises which didn’t make it through the pandemic, it was crushing to watch on the news. Having such famous Grandparents must have exposed you to an extraordinary upbringing, can you share some memories of your grandparents, lessons they taught you and people you met? I never met my grandfather as he passed away before I was born but I grew up in his house that is now a museum. It’s the most beautiful property I have ever seen. And my dad was a sound engineer who worked a lot with Queen and David Bowie amongst many others so that was also cool. But my favorite moments was meeting Princess Diana and Michael Jackson. I even got to go on stage with him during a concert which was very fun!

T
ell us a bit more about yoursel f. . . . Ha ve you always bee n a mo d el ?
No, I actually finished my Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Business Law before I even started my Modelling career. I never saw Modelling as a way to create a living but I’ve definitely proven that is possible now. You moved to the USA and became a green-card holder through your Modelling career. How has that journey been for you? Honestly I’ve loved every second of living in America. It really is the land of opportunity and I’ve been able to really dive into my creative side through Modelling, TV Presenting and Production. I’ve met some incredible people who have given me some great opportunities. I love how easily you can connect with other creatives, and everyone is supportive of each other. And you’ve expanded more into the TV Industry over the last year, how did they happen? I’ve always enjoyed public speaking and being on stage and I’ve taken courses to develop my skills in the presenting arena. Being in front of the camera is something I really enjoy along with communicating with people from all walks of life. I’ve had some great opportunities to travel and host over the last couple of years. And then in the last year I expanded into being behind the camera also and I really enjoy the creativeness. Filming opened another opportunity for me to be a Producer on a up and coming TV Show all around America. I love traveling so being able to be creative and travel is a dream come true for me. What has been your favorite place to travel to? I absolutely love France. Paris is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve been to but just outside of Paris you can visit these incredible countryside places like the Loire Valley which are full of history, beautiful castles, and wineries. The beauty of France really took my breath away - I always try to go back. Is there anywhere you’d like to travel to that you haven’t been to yet?
There are so many places in Europe that I haven’t explored yet and would love to see. Croatia and Italy are on the top of my bucket list. Do you miss home?
Yes, every single day! Australia is such a beautiful place and I really miss my family and friends and the relaxed lifestyle there. The beaches are some of the most spectacular beaches in the world. If you haven’t been you should definitely go! What advice would you give younger girls wanting to follow in your footsteps?
I would have to say never giving up. In any career, particularly Modelling or the television industry you will be turned down more times than not. You really have to focus on your passion and the reason why you are doing what you do and keep pushing and working hard for what you want. Eventually the opportunities will come to you.
“I love traveling so being able to be creative and travel is a dream come true for me.”
79
What do you enjoy most when you have time off?
Usually when I’m working I’m traveling all the time, so I really enjoy relaxing at home and getting back into my training regime at the gym. The ideal day for me is a morning coffee and walk with my little yorkie Tinkerbell, catching up with friends at a spin or kickboxing class and relaxing out the back of my house with a good book.
What do you do to stay in shape?
I absolutely love kickboxing. It’s a full body workout and raises your heart rate the right way. If I’m going to do cardio, I love something that keeps me engaged and with high intensity. If you went back in the past is there anything you would change about your journey? Definitely not! I believe everything you do in life happens for a reason and helps to shape the person you become. Any challenges I’ve faced and overcome have allowed me to grow into who I am today and given me the knowledge I have now on how to continually strive to do things better.
