INTERVIEW

BÖRNI

New Heights Swiss born veteran recording artist, Börni, drops her highly anticipated track ‘New Heights’, as she gets ready to take flight on an everlasting musical journey that will encompass all that she has learned throughout her career as an artist. Born and raised in Zürich, Switzerland, Börni found her passion for music at just three years old, when she began singing and playing the violin, then soon after turning to the piano and guitar. Throughout her adolescence, she sang in her gospel choir, and wrote and performed her own songs in her first garage rock band. She quickly discovered that she had a talent for performing and entertaining in front of an audience. This included performing on stage at just six years old in the prestigious Zürich Opera House. In 2007, Börni competed in the national Swiss show, “Musicstar,” where her performance led her to ink a record deal with Sony Music. While with Sony, she was able to create and release two albums, Fighter (2008), which was featured in the Swiss music charts’ Top 10, and Plan B, while also working alongside some of the most successful producers in Switzerland, as well as four-time Grammy nominated musician and producer/songwriter Linda Perry. W

hat was your goal when writing 'New Heights'? Do you always approach every song with an intended plan or message for your audience? m Broadway to the TV Screen you have done a lot, more than most people your age. We see that you started acting at a young age. What inspired you to pursue your career so early? To inspire others to dream big, overcome obstacles, always stand up, and push through tough times, enjoying the journey to reach “New Heights” every day. “New Heights” was inspired by the struggles that I, or anyone else who has a dream, goes through. Those struggles either make you or break you, and “New Heights” is about what is possible when you don’t give up. I try to convey a message with every song. Of course, there are more earnest topics than others, but even with the lighter topics, I always have a concept for a song.

the sound that’s right for me now. I also made huge progress on the visuals with images, videos, and style. What encouraged your new sound, and could you talk a little bit about what it is that you personally look for in a song? I’ve always been curious about all types of music and was never afraid to try them. Anything from Rock to Pop to Alt to Urban. I’d find what I loved about it and use that in my own development. That curiosity led me to the sound I have today, which is a fusion of all my favorite inspirations. I’m always looking for a feeling that emits from a song, and most of the time, I care what the lyrics are saying.

“My new single was inspired by the struggles that I, or anyone else who has a dream, goes through"

How would you describe your creative process? Do you tend to go with the flow, or prefer to have an idea already set in mind? For me, the music usually translates a certain feeling. It will decide the mood of what the topic will be, for sure. Most of the time, the lyrics will be about something I’ve experienced myself or possibly others or the world in the current state, and then I’ll go from there. How does the music come along? I would say, that’s definitely depending on how I feel at the moment, or who is in the room with me to create. I usually start with an instrument, add a beat, and then try to come up with a vocal top line right away while It’s still fresh in my mind. I don’t think I’ve ever started with lyrics before I had the melody. But I would write down topics, and when the right music was there, I would pull the ideas back up. What did you learn while taking a break from the music scene? I actually never stopped doing music, but thanks to Synematik, the producer of "New Heights," and The Page Brothers, a producer duo from New York, I found

27

How do you know when a song is complete? What gives you that satisfying feeling? When everybody in the room is excited about it. Most of the time you already know when you’re on to something. I would say I’ve had the best parties in-studio sessions because we were feeling the song we created, and invested a lot of time, thought, and passion into it. That's a really satisfying feeling. What advantages does growing up in Zürich, Switzerland provide for your music? Swiss people are very diligent, perseverant, and humble. These principles are definitely influences in my lyrics and my approach when writing songs. The American lifestyle, on the other hand, taught me to dream bigger and think outside the box. The mixture between both Swiss and American culture would lead me to the music I’m presenting today and am excited about. How did you coin the term, Vava Voom?! Growing up as the cool friend who hangs around with the boys and influenced by three brothers, I also developed a girly side that, most of the time, didn’t shine through so much. In exploring this side more, my alter ego Vava Voom got her time to shine. Finding my true self on both sides makes me Börni, and it illustrates my true character.

Can you talk a little bit about your first trip to New York! What was your exact feelings the moment you touched down in the Big Apple? I fell in love with the American lifestyle and people on my first trip to New York. All the high buildings, the lights, and the speed of this city impressed me. Just a short story: That first week I visited a bar in Times Square. I met a local bartender and shared my signing as a recording artist in Switzerland. He told me that he knew some producers. At this point, I quickly told him that I had heard people say this a few times that week already. He insisted that he was serious and that he would take me to the studio upstairs the next day. Reluctantly, I appeared the next day in front of the bar. Thank God I did because when I got to the studio building, and the doors of the elevator opened on the 10th floor, we entered one of the most famous studios in New York City: QUAD Studio NYC. The studio manager, at the time, Jason Panniell showed me around, and he and I would become a great team from then on, working together on different projects to this day. That trip to New York really let me hit the ground running in the US. What was it like singing in front of thousands for Celine Dion! Has this experience in a way prepared you for what is to come? Being one of six chosen children that got to get on stage with Celine Dion, I was honored and super nervous

back then. It was such a course-setting highlight in my life. It felt surreal but so amazing! Do you still play the violin? How many instruments do you play total, and how often do you try to use real instruments instead of a computer? It’s funny. During the quarantine, I explored playing again when I borrowed my brother's violin. It’s still one of the most beautiful instruments to me. I also play the piano, guitar, and drums. I love live instruments combined with the unlimited options of digital sounds. I do it very often and try to embrace the new sounds, and combine it with the organic instrumentation. What are your plans for the future? After a time of preparing, I am so excited to release now one song after another. We have so much music and visuals ready and are eager to tell my story and inspire people to dream bigger and reach New Heights! What continues to inspire you to create and make music? The beautiful people and their stories in this world, especially when times get a little rougher than before. You will see people rise with integrity and compassion. All of this is so emotional and makes me want to tell their story, or inspire them, or just celebrate life with them.

“I fell in love with the American lifestyle and people on my first trip to New York”

SPRING/SUMMER

2020

THE INSPIRED TRENDS Osunshine range Creamsicles, tropical getaways, 60’s romance movies, and all the one can get - these are some of the dreams that came to life at By SHARON JANE @sharon.js

Spring/Summer 2020 Fashion Week. From a heatwave of short shorts to nostalgic prints, every collection was filled with inspiration and bloomed with the finer and sweeter things in life. As fashion continuously tries to break the mold and follow its heart, this season we saw a slice of every soul in every garment and accessory seen. The wait is over for warmer days, so let’s plunge into some of the inspiring moments of Spring/Summer 2020.

THE ERAS

I believe that we all have an era we romanticize and are fascinated by. Fashion is an art form that I think is most inspired by countless beloved moments of different eras. For this year’s Spring/Summer season, we were gifted with lots of looks inspired by the 70s. Disco is still alive as we saw statement collars, loafers, flatforms, wide belts, bell bottoms, oversized colorful sunglasses, and more. We were also met with the romantic and feminine power of the 60s, bringing back higher waistlines, sweet color palettes, naiveté socks and slingbacks, and wallpaper prints. FENDI

44

The 90s and early 2000s were also very much present as we were struck by nostalgic jelly beaded purses, Cali-surfer girl vibes, bucket hats, and blinged-out fabrics. Although we saw many elements of different eras, their spirits unite with one main concept: freedom. They represent times where we were inspired to express freely, to shift into a time of fearlessness, curiosity, discovery, and self-love -- and that’s what we hope that 2020 will be filled with.

THE MAKEUP

Feathery eyebrows, sunset ombre eyelids, classic cat eyes, bright geometric details, rosy cheeks, glossy lips, glowy skin, glitter under the eyes (like Fendi did) or the classic au natural look: these are some of the makeup looks seen that are perfect for hot nights out or going on spontaneous adventures under the sun.

THE ACCESSORIES

What is Holly Golightly without her tiara and pearl necklace paired with the iconic black Givenchy dress? Accessories are what make an outfit timeless and evidently are used to bring to life the stories designers want to tell. From Margiela’s military pins, Fendi’s tropical printed bucket hats, Gucci’s larger-than-life chained colored sunglasses, Chanel’s pearl chain necklaces, McQueen’s recycled-material wide belts: just like these accessories have a backstory, it was made intentionally for those of us that express our stories with our accessories.

THE SHOES

Shoes for spring and summer were positively made for walking. As designers now opt for lower-heeled shoes for shows, they saw the positive reactions of observers and decided to give us an enormous variety of flatter shoes and fun ways to use them. Fendi’s candy-colored socks and block-heeled slingbacks, Alexander McQueen’s artsy locally-made wedges, Simone Rocha’s espadrille flatforms, Givenchy’s square-toed sandals, Loewe’s romantic detailed loafers, Miu Miu’s paint-splattered boots, Prabal Gurung’s neon streaked white sneakers, Carolina Herrera’s bright fuchsia Mary Janes, and Bottega Veneta’s woven mules all showed us what’s trending for this season in shoes: quirky and eclectic shoes specially made to carpe diem. THE FABRICS

Just like our beloved grandmothers warmed us with hand-made knitted and crocheted clothes, we saw designers reinvent and incorporate the coziness of crochet into ultra-feminine garments. Quilted and plush throw-like fabrics were also seen so we don’t miss our favorite blankets and snug into stylish outfits that take comfy and fashionable to a whole other level. Some more fabrics we saw were immensely varied: locally made linen, leather, vinyl, lycra, suede, tulle, sheer, woven, acid wash denim, lingerie-inspired silk, lace, pleather and earth-friendly, upcycled fabrics like organic cotton or recycled organza. The fabrics used all have a story behind them from Margiela’s added puffy fabric to simulate parachutes as an ode to the brave ones that sacrificed their freedom for ours, Bottega’s woven beach-ready hobo bags, McQueen’s endangered flower organza, to Fendi’s quilted flower power printed sets. In summary: this summer we are prescribed to relax and enjoy the magic of summer vacation, bask in the sun, smell the roses, stay inspired and to simply have fun.

THE PRINTS

The prints seen this season evoked the utmost sincerity, stimulated a feeling of joie de vivre and nostalgia, and set out to bring people together. Alexander McQueen’s collection has perhaps the best example of a print’s sincere form of creation and purpose. Sarah Burton (creative director of Alexander McQueen) gathered line art drawings from Central Saint Martins students in a class that was given at a McQueen store in London. Inspired by the Stitch School in London, Sarah gathered McQueen’s entire staff, from HR to the seamstresses, to hand-embroider over the students’ line art. Sarah focused on revisiting Alexander McQueen’s past and brought back to life old patterns and recycled fabrics. It was also so interesting and moving to know that she focused on working with locals like using linen made from 3 Irish persons: a female farmer, and the only linen weaver and beetler of Ireland. We also saw watercolor flowers, 60s wallpapers, nautical stripes, flirty polka dots, and a wide range of brightly colored patterns inspired by nature. Black and white patterns were also greatly seen but even the most elegant and demure prints had some of the same sense of light-hearted joy spring brings us.

THE COLORS

Chocolatey Browns, creamy oranges, and strawberry milkshake pinks: one of the palettes seen this season was inspired by the sweeter things in life. The colors seen also took us to a tropical escape, inspired by the golden sun, summer sunsets, bright floral and fauna, fresh citrus fruits, aromatic spices, and birds of paradise. Some colors reminded us to have inner peace and balance by featuring quiet mossy greens, calming peachy tones, and vibrant purple auras. With Upcycling in mind more than ever, collections are increasingly conscious in showcasing colors that can be used year-round like the unfailing black and white. The colors seen this season were made for the wanderlusters, nature lovers, curious crafters, free spirits, aspiring artists, zen masters, elegance conservers and those that fully understand the joy and art of living.

The Agency TOTEM is pleased to announce its collaboration with the talented South-Korean designer YIE KIM. YIE KIM sets out to personify her appreciation of modern art and design through the brand in 2019. As a Korean-rooted designer and a graduate of Parsons School of Design, New York, she is able to capture the global world of modern art from every aspect while residing in Europe. Her expanded vision is delivered in the collections with quiet, yet bold, sophisticated sculpted design pieces. Materials have been carefully selected with fine fabrics to ensure a timeless design in this fast-evolving fashion world. The collections cater to the modern person who perceives fashion as a form of art. Intertwining of modern art and fashion is the founding philosophy of the brand, YIE KIM.
