CATWALK ON FAIRFAX

Catwalk on Fairfax is one of Los Angeles’s hidden gems, but has long been a place of pilgrimage for the fashionistas and the style cognoscenti. It has been featured in Lady Gaga’s own style blog. Kanye, Diddy and Miley are frequent visitors as are many of the great designers such as Tom Ford, John Galliano, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Nicolas Ghesquière to name just a few.

ATWALK was started almost two decades ago by Renee Johnston and Michelle Webb. Renee was a costume designer and Michelle a music video producer, and both shared an absolute passion for fashion. That led to the idea of creating a unique vintage store that would be more focused on curating incredible collections than just selling clothes. After almost twenty years their collection has grown into around 100,000 pieces, and their new goal is to create a fashion and design museum. Andrew Macpherson interviewed Renee and Michelle about their history and the dream of a new fashion museum for this story, which features unique and historic pieces from their archives. AM: How did Catwalk Fairfax start?

AM: Sweet, so Renee, how did you get there?

Renne: The store’s name is Catwalk, @catwalkfairfax is our Instagram handle. We decided to call it that because our landlady is Julie Newmar who was the original Catwoman for Batman TV show. We hadn't signed the lease yet, but when we told her we were going to call it Catwalk she loved it. Of course we wanted to make her happy but we also thought it was appropriate for what we wanted to do with vintage designer clothing.

Renee: I started out as a costume designer. I did Spinal Tap with Rob Reiner and also worked a lot with Guy Bourdin and with Larry Flynt on Hustler. That led to doing a lot of music videos for MTV and the A&R group in New York and LA. Then I started directing.

Michelle: She did our numerology too, and our numbers worked, so she liked that too. AM: What were your numbers? Do you remember?

“We’re close to a hundred thousand pieces now"

Renee: No, that was almost twenty years ago. AM: So what were you both doing before you opened Catwalk? Michelle, you first. Michelle: I was a music video commissioner for Atlantic Records, which is how I met Renee. The producer was trying to embezzle money from wardrobe and I caught him, so then Renee and I went out shopping to style the video and we had an absolute blast. That’s how it all started, then over time we decided to turn our passion for fashion into a business.

AM: Guy Bourdin, that’s amazing, do you have any of that work? Renee: Yes, it’s in a box in the attic somewhere.

nt to see it, please! What t AM: I want to see it, please! What was your fav vid that you directed?

Renee: The one I did for Dawn Penn’s song You Don’t Love Me, which everyone knows as No, No, No! jumps to mind first.

:AM: Such a great a great track and time for music

videos too! Tell us about your vision for creating a fashion museum. I know you've been curating this collection for a long time, and have several thousand pieces here. Renee: We’re close to a hundred thousand pieces now. We’ve curated many collections within the collection, and believe it's important that they get seen, especially by people who love fashion and style.

AM: You've already shown me some amazing pieces, like the Grace Jones Azzadine Alaïa knitted dress, that beautiful Azzedine denim jacket and the Gaultier Junior leopard print jacket we shot here, all of which I remember from my time in Paris. Do you see displaying everything as a permanent installation or as a revolving show? What kind of space do you imagine it being housed in? Renee: I’d love to see it in a classic museum, kind of like the de Young in San Francisco, LACMA or maybe even the V&A. I’d see it as a permanent but constantly revolving collection. Michelle: And I see elements of it going out as a series traveling shows too, but as a part of The Catwalk Collection. I’d love to see it displayed in Art & Design spaces all over the globe. AM: That’s such an inspiring idea, I look very forward to seeing you both manifest it. Thanks so much for opening your beautiful shop up to us, and good luck with the museum. MILAN FASHION WEEK

6 TOP TRENDS THAT REIGNED FALL/WINTER 2019-2020

THE RUNWAYS By SHARON JANE @sharon.js

E very fashion week has its own magic and unique interpretation of what’s to come and trend in the ever-growing and ever-changing world of fashion. Milan’s

translation of this is usually portrayed with the classic luxury and elegance that its fashion weeks are known for. The runways of Milan were filled with its signature opulence but in a most refreshing and daring way. The femme fatale sophistication was remixed with lady boss suits and powerful pants for strutting. Some designers replaced what one expects to see in fall/winter shows with breezy florals, wispy skirts, and colors that were reminiscent of a blooming and warm spring. The fabrics, colors, textures, patterns and shapes usually associated with autumn and winter took an unexpected turn for the better in Italy’s fashion capital. Take a look at the top 6 trends seen in Milan Fashion Week 2019-2020 Fall/Winter that shook the fashion world. Credits for the images: Sergei Korenev, Alessandro Lucioni & Filippo Fior

POWER SUITS The 90s are alive and well for this fall and winter, which delivered boss-worthy suits. Max Mara sure meant business with numerous impeccable looks including one that Bella Hadid wore that featured a pinstriped blazer and skirt set completed with knee-high crocodile-textured boots, black tights and a bagged vest tucked under the blazer. “The Politics of Glamour” collection truly embraced what the brand represents, which is strong and powerful women. Max Mara won its fame of clothing some of the most empowering women when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was seen looking like a winner wearing the infamous red “Glamis” coat after a complex negotiation with the President of the United States. Some more brands that were all work and pleasure were Vivetta, which had a more fun and colorful take, Versace, with a grungy yet sexy interpretation, and the effortlessly cool Sportmax.

WIDE PANTS High-waisted, mega-wide pants that moved strongly at every step commanded the runways of Italy. Designers like Cavalli and Ferragamo combined this trend with the power suit trend by pairing the wide pants with shoulder-enhancing blazers. Max Mara lounged in with soft, neutral colored pants in complete harmony with every piece it was combined with that pleased the minimalist at heart. Including colors like crème, camel, tawny brown, white-freckled charcoal and stormy greys, it was neutral, monochromatic perfection. Emilio Pucci had a more vibrant take by featuring jewel-toned, silky almost liquid-like pants. Versace delivered a 90s flair to the not so 9-to-5 shoulder-stacked grey plaid pantsuit. Alberta Ferretti went for an Equestrian vibe with loose-fitted stark white pants tucked in leather boots paired with wide belts, big-collared button-ups, and strong lapel blazers. Jil Sander featured floor-grazing chocolate-espresso leather pants.

FUN WITH HOISERY Fendi meaningfully included tights with a label logo print but with a typography that not many are used to seeing (that is, the famous double-F modern sans serif logo). “The interlinked double F logo [dubbed “Karligraphy”] that Lagerfeld himself invented in 1981 was reimagined in the copperplate font of his own handwriting and woven into hosiery…” , according to Vogue.

3

Versace had lots of fun with this trend, going all out with colorful tights and over the knee lace-topped socks that were combined with even more vibrant outfits. Some looks also featured youthful fuzzy socks paired with point-toed pumps and crystal-encrusted bowed sandals. In the more monochromatic part of the collection, black on black ensembles featured some intricate lace cut-out designs on black tights.

PRETTY PLEATS Pleats are known for adding freedom of movement and dimension to any garment that chooses to embrace it. Depending on the technique, each pleating creates a unique and kinetic effect. This trend danced to quite a lot of runways at MFW. Marni showed it was serious by opening with an oversized, grey and double-breasted blazer with a maxi knife-pleated skirt that flowed together so well, that one would think it was a one-piece garment. In the heartfelt collection, Fendi presented, you could almost see Karl’s signature in every single pleated skirt that graced the runway. The skirts ranged from flowy, earth-toned, midi-length skirts, semi-transparent ones that played with light and dimension to reveal little but impacting details in every step, to a bold, box-pleated, patent leather, and aquamarine maxi skirt.

SPRING INTO FALL

5

Who would’ve thought that spring and summery colors would be paired with cozy winter coats? Max Mara opened the show with three models, a 90s runway style homage, with monochromatic ensembles featuring colors like cerulean, cyan and baby-chick yellow. Vivetta and Elisabetta Franchi went with bright, floral colors like fuchsia, lilac, emerald green, aquamarine and sky blue that gave the winter coats and capes the warmth that spring and summer give us. Some of their looks even included floral patterns. Florals? For autumn? Groundbreaking (truly). Milan also said that yes, you can definitely wear white after Labor Day. Designers like Alberta Ferretti, Attico, Maison Margiela, and Jil Sander delivered crisp white ensembles that brightened up fashion week.

LEATHER ON LEATHER… ON LEATHER Milan Fashion Week said in bold font that there is no such thing as too much leather. Ferragamo, Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini, Cavalli, Versace, Marni, Tod’s, Emilio Pucci, Fendi, Prada, Max Mara, Gucci, Alberta Ferretti, Jil Sander, Margiela and more all included leather in their designs which ranged from head-to-toe ensembles to adding minute finishing touches. The leather ensembles came in all shapes and sizes, playing with colors like cognac, canary yellow, and a bright blue-green, textures like glossy patent, smooth, satin-like finishes, and 3-dimensional animalistic surfaces featured in all kinds of curvy to sharp-shaped garments. Ferragamo gave us head-to-toe leather looks that had matching colored sets and color-blocked looks as well. Tod’s buttery and boxy coats, Jil Sander’s chocolate colored wide satiny pants, Fendi’s bright-colored patent boots, Gucci’s wide tied belts, and Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini’s youthful semiglossy jackets and miniskirts claimed that the 90s were back again and ready to party. 72

W

hat made you want to be an actor?

Gosh, I used to run around saying I was going to be an actress when I was a little girl because I loved making people happy, making them laugh and putting a smile on their face. Then I took acting classes while I was in school and once I graduated I decided to pursue the dream full time. How did you get discovered? There wasn’t a real discovery moment. I started my career modeling. The work I did modeling gave me an edge, especially the Beach Bunny Contest as they have such a big fan base. I got my start in TV on a pilot for The Saint, so I guess that’s when I was initially discovered. Was it a remake of the old English one? I loved that show when I was a kid. Exactly. What character have you enjoyed playing the most?

So conceptually you're a fan of it, you embrace it. Do you enjoy it? Yes, I do, I love my stories, I have fun with it. At times it can be a little stressful because you literally have to be social on social media, like go around liking, commenting. You need to commit the time to doing it, but I enjoy the window into so many other worlds too. So you take it seriously as a vital part of the business? Absolutely, it’s part of the job Nice. Who's your favorite musician or band? Who do you listen to a lot? I feel like such a dork for like saying this because I always say it, but I love Chris Martin and Coldplay. I think their music is amazing. It's inspirational. It's clean and sends positive messages. I love the Chain Smokers, Imagine Dragons and Panic at the Disco.

"The work I did modeling gave me an edge"

I’ve liked a lot of the different characters I’ve played for different reasons, but I liked playing Mia from Acts of Violence the most. She was really sweet, she loved her fiancé and his brothers, but then she was also super tough, she took no shit and could really defend herself.

Which director would you most like to work with and why? I'd love to work with Martin Scorsese. Of course he’s a legend and I'm a huge fan of his films. I especially loved the Wolf of Wall Street. What do you think about social media and its role in the business? People can say it doesn't matter, but I think it does, especially in this day and age where everyone is their own entity. Social media has become a marketing tool, so if they're deciding between you and someone else, your followers are free marketing for their film. In the entertainment industry they are making movies

79

to make money, so by definition, they need their film widely watched. Social media has become a very important tool for getting it out there.

This magazine is LA based, so let’s talk about our city. How long have you lived here now? About seven years.

So it’s home? Yes, this is home. Tell me, what do you love most about LA? I really like the nature and the clean, healthy lifestyle. It encourages you to be outdoors, to go hiking and take advantage of the amazing topography, the beaches, the mountains, the deserts, and all the amazing parks. I also really enjoy the driving too, though not so much the being stuck in traffic part of it. I grew up in New Jersey, so blasting music with the windows down feels like a slice of freedom. The one thing I do struggle with out here is the lack of really good delis, there’s nothing that compares to the East Coast delis, but that's pretty much my only complaint.

I never realized that weren’t any good delis, never heard that before! Do you like the north beaches or the south beaches? Are you more a Malibu girl or would you go down to the Orange County beaches like Laguna or Huntington Beach? I go even more north. I love the beach in Montecito because it’s dog-friendly, the people are super nice and there’s a real sense of community.

Are you going to do the kitchen, the marketing and distribution from here in California?

Where's your favorite beach up there?

Yes, it would be Cali-based, baby.

It's called Butterfly Beach, it's right near the Four Seasons. I love that one and so do the dogs.

What bones do you use? Chicken, beef, pork, all of it?

Do you spend a lot of time in Santa Barbara and Montecito? A good amount, I go up there several times a year.

What's your favorite hang out here in LA? What's your favorite like restaurant, club? Where do you like going? If you had a friend come to town for a weekend where would you take them? I know it sounds a bit bougie, but I do love the Soho House because it has spectacular views and cocktails. I also really like Élephante in Santa Monica which overlooks the beach and once again has great cocktails and food. What’s your favorite restaurant here? I love Dan Tana's because it's so old Hollywood. I love the staff there, it's just such a fun environment. I love Tower Bar in the Sunset Tower because it's so classic and with the piano it just feels like very 1920s. If you weren't acting, what would you be doing? Selling bone broth, of course. Tell us about your bone broth business. How did that come about? My sister Michele is super into health and wellness. She has a fitness account called @FitForFoodies. I was really trying to get healthy and begging her to train

QP

me. In New York we'd have bone broth all the time together, then when she came out here to visit we went to find bone broth and realized there weren’t many places to go to like in New York. That's why I decided to start it, but also because I have digestion problems and it's really helped me. Besides I always wanted to do something entrepreneurial while I act.

The whole enchilada, all grass-fed healthy bones for the various broths. I'm also going to make one for vegans with Chaga mushroom, seaweed, and collagen powder. Fantastic. How long have you been on the bone broth regimen yourself? I've been on it really since November. It's really, really changed my gut health and I feel way better than I have in ages. Are you using it as a meal replacement? No, not me personally, some people do bone broth cleanses. I drink it just like you would coffee. You should have a cup of bone broth every day, the health benefits are exponential. I have at least one cup a day if not more. Is it like a morning soup, if you will? I've been having it in the morning, but if I'm super busy that morning, I'll come home and have it later in the day. At my place, we will offer it hot in a to-go cup, or if you want to bring there’ll be a fridge full of 32-ounce ones to take home and heat up. Is it like a morning soup, if you will? The meat is all going to be grass-fed?

Absolutely. The bones will be 100% grass-fed. The healthier the animal, the more benefits of the collagen. That's something that's very, very important to me to have these animals happy, healthy, grass-fed and free roaming on the farm. Sounds awesome! I'll bring you guys some!

THE HOLLYWOOD CONSPIRATOR

UPPING THE BUCKET BY LYNN VENTURELLA @lynnventurella Edited by Leigh Keene

T

Whenever I am at a loss for words (which isn’t very often) or have nothing new to write about, I find I can always rely on my favorite streaming channel to be inspirational. Of course, if you have been faithfully reading my column you can probably guess I am talking about Netflix. I simply love Netflix. Why? Because they are always upping the bucket or changing the game.

oday they have a controversy brewing with Steven Spielberg, one of the most amazing and influential directors of all time. They also just penned a brilliant deal with three Japanese production houses to continue to build their animation content and they have once again upped their critical resume with the new Martin Scorsese movie, The Irishman, starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino which is sure to be a huge success and quite possibly the Oscar winner for next year.

the couch and watch movies for hours rather than brave the weather and crowds to see one movie. I understand that certain movies have a bigger impact in theaters but I am thrilled that I have the choice. And choice is really what Netflix’s and other streaming services have given us.

Let’s start with the Steven Spielberg debate... Mr. Spielberg believes that there is a big difference between the experience of watching a movie on television versus a movie theatre: "The greatest contribution we can make as filmmakers is to give audiences the motion picture theatrical experience. I'm a firm believer that movie theaters need to be around forever." It is hard to disagree with Mr. Spielberg as he is absolutely correct and has created some amazing cinematic experiences. But from my own perspective, the experience is not based on where or how you watch, but on the format itself. I can get just as emotionally involved and carried away watching a movie in my bed as I can at a cinema. I am thankful to Netflix that I am able to have this amazing movie experience whenever I want or need it, and that I don’t have to spend an outrageous amount of money to be able to have it. Because of the cost to go to the movie theatre, it is done as a special outing rather than as a regular everyday event. But I, for one, don’t want to be restricted or have to pick only seeing one or two movies a month. I find it much more comfortable to cuddle up on

TRIPLE FRONTIER 118

THE ORDER

Because Netflix is willing to fund and create excellent work, we must give this work a chance to be recognized and compete for all honors including Oscar or we are stifling creative competition. There should be no rules on creativity and competition. Greatness should be encouraged no matter the vehicle through which it is delivered. Interesting new Releases on Netflix to check out: RUSSIAN DOLL, TRIPLE FRONTIER, THE HIGHWAY MEN and THE ORDER . For a while now Netflix has been leading the way putting major stars in their original series such as: Jane Fonda in GRACE AND FRANKIE, Ashton Kushner in THE RANCH, Michael Douglas in THE KOMINSKY METHOD and Drew Barrymore in SANTA CLARITA DIET. Keep watching as they are using the same concept to build their reputation in movie making. Both TRIPLE FRONTIER and THE HIGHWAY MEN are big star

movies with Ben Affleck in TRIPLE FRONTIER and Kevin Costner, Woody Harrelson and Kathy Bates in THE HIGHWAY MEN. Netflix is in the lead but watch out for Apple. Apple is used to being a leader in everything they do And they are planning some major original content with their new TV platforms. No way do they want to play second to Netflix as they compete with the likes of Steven Spielberg and Reese Witherspoon. Wait a minute, why is Steven Spielberg creating with Apple TV platforms when he is debating the Netflix movie experience? Interesting and I am definitely looking forward to seeing how it all develops. All I know for sure, is we all benefit from this healthy competition as we the viewer get to enjoy all this fabulous new creative content from both these amazing companies. Stay tuned, as I can’t wait to see what new surprises will happen tomorrow.
