Second in command: Janney joins new season of ‘The Diplomat’
This conspiracy goes all the way to the top. The political thriller “The Diplomat” is back for a second season on Netflix Thursday, Oct. 31, with Keri Russell (“The Americans”) returning as American ambassador to the United Kingdom, Kate Wyler. This season, Kate struggles with the realization that the British government was behind a deadly bombing of one of its own ships in the Persian Gulf — the attack that led to her reassignment in the series premiere.
Burdened by the knowledge of possible treason, Kate fights to find the truth and prove who ordered the strike. But in a world like Kate’s where information is currency, who can she trust? The ambassador is never truly alone, and as evidenced by the events of the first season, even her most personal secrets become public knowledge without ever having to spill them herself.
Also returning this season are David Gyasi (“Carnival Row”) as U.K. foreign secretary Austin Dennison; Ali Ahn (“Agatha All Along”) as CIA station chief Eidra Park; Ato Essandoh (“Chicago Med”) as Stuart Heyford, deputy chief of mission of the U.S. embassy; Celia Imrie (“Better Things”) as campaign manager Margaret Roylin; Rory Kinnear (“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”) as Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge and Miguel Sandoval (“Sugar”) as Secretary of State Miguel Ganon.
A career diplomat, Kate proved to be an unpolished gem in the more forward-facing role as ambassador to the U.K. during the first season of “The Diplomat.” Though she arrived ready to work, Kate quickly learned that there was more to her reassignment than what was on the surface.
President William Rayburn (Michael McKean, “Better Call Saul”) and his chief of staff, Billie Appiah (Nana Mensah, “Presumed Innocent”), sprung the more public position on the very no-frills Kate as a means of vetting her for the soon-to-be-vacated VP seat. Now caught up on the plan, Kate faces down Vice President Grace Penn, portrayed by new cast member Allison Janney (“Palm Royale”), who is not about to back down.
Debora Cahn (“Grey’s Anatomy”), creator of “The Diplomat,” shared with Tudum a bit about her fellow “The West Wing” alum, Janney’s, role in the new season saying, “the VP thinks Kate’s after her job ... and she’s not entirely wrong. Kate thinks she understands the VP. She is mistaken.” After getting the lay of the land on the other side of the pond, Kate is more ready than ever for a fight — whether it’s for the title of VP or holding a government responsible for murders it tried to pin on other nations.

Festive finish lines: ‘Outrageous Pumpkins’ and ‘Halloween Wars’ prepare for big finales
Double, double, toil and trouble … Food Network’s Halloween programming comes to a boil as “Outrageous Pumpkins” and “Halloween Wars” double up with back-to-back season finales airing Sunday, Oct. 27, on Food Network.
Offering both tricks and treats, these series see talented creatives from across the culinary spectrum dive headfirst into the spooky season, with episodes celebrating ghosts, ghouls and all the supernatural things that go bump in the night.
Hosted by Damaris Phillips (“Southern at Heart”), “Outrageous Pumpkins” takes one holiday tradition to an extreme, inviting some of the country’s best carvers to try their hand at crafting elaborate masterpieces on pumpkins big and small. Joined by judges like Terri Hardin (“Food Network Challenge”), Dan Langan (“Bakeaway Camp with Martha Stewart”) and SFX makeup artist J. Anthony Kosar (“Candyman,” 2021), Phillips has upped the ante during this fifth season, so far asking her competitors to carve everything from spooky crime scenes to mad scientist labs and horrifying hybrid beasts.
Now, for its final episode, Food Network shares: “The final all-star teams looking to be named rulers of the pumpkin patch find out not every fairy tale has a happy ending, as host Damaris Phillips tasks them with turning a classic children’s story into a scary tale. Judges Terri Hardin, Dan Langan and Duff Goldman [‘Duff Takes The Cake’] decide who lives happily ever after, earning one team the title of Outrageous Pumpkins All-Stars Champions, the hallowed prize belt and $50,000.”
While the carvers get to work, sculptors of a different breed — cake sculptors, sugar artists and confectionery masterminds — fight to win the 14th annual run of “Halloween Wars.” Led by host Jonathan Bennett (“Mean Girls,” 2004), this competition asks its bakers and makers to produce over-the-top Halloween-themed displays

worthy of the game’s $50,000 grand prize. So far, Bennett has asked to see scenes of monsters going trick-or-treating and vampires going on dates, with last week’s semifinals seeing the competitors tackle the question: what would happen if nature fought back against humans?
For their final challenge, the remaining two teams will be asked to create their largest displays yet, shining a spotlight on Earth’s spookiest hotels for judges Shinmin Li (“Holiday Wars”) and Aarti Sequeira (“Aarti Paarti”). With $25,000 on the line, contestants hope for plenty of treats and very few tricks.
Enjoy some festive frights when the season finales of “Outrageous Pumpkins” and “Halloween Wars” air Sunday, Oct. 27, on Food Network.

BEST MOVIE MONSTERS
Boris Karloff in “Frankenstein”
Frankenstein: Though Boris Karloff established the legend of playing Dr. Frankenstein’s monster, the screen incarnation pre-dated him, going back to 1910 – and actors from Lon Chaney Jr. to Robert De Niro would succeed him. Turner Classic Movies shows the 1931 Karloff version during the concluding day of a two-day Halloween “Terror-Thon” Thursday, Oct. 31.
Dracula: Here’s another situation where one actor (Bela Lugosi) made a frightening role his trademark, but others actually played it before he did, including in the unauthorized adaptation “Nosferatu.” Christopher Lee and Frank Langella also would become noted for their interpretations of the character.
The Mummy: Karloff also got to do extra monster duty with a part he got all wrapped up in, quite literally. Arnold Vosloo inherited the role (and the bountiful bandages) in a modern retelling and its sequel, and another remake starred Tom Cruise.
King Kong: The mightiest ape of all first reigned supreme in a 1933 stop-motion-animation milestone, in which he famously carried a shrieking Fay Wray, then returned in a 1976 version (with Jessica Lange in his massive palm) and director Peter Jackson’s 2005 version (featuring Naomi Watts as the apple of Kong’s eye).
Godzilla: Originated in Japan and brought to America in a 1956 version of the initial movie that added scenes featuring Raymond Burr, this giant sea monster has been revived on film numerous times in projects of varying quality, the most notable of which starred Matthew Broderick (1998) and Bryan Cranston (2014).
The Fly: First played by Al (later David) Hedison and later by Jeff Goldblum and Eric Stoltz, this character derived its terror from generating thoughts of what could happen if man tampered with nature.
The Alien: Based on designs by H.R. Giger, the intergalactic enemy that first terrorized a space crew in “Alien” (1979) — then had friends and relatives who continued that campaign in the sequels — surely gave astronaut Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and others much opportunity to test the famous tagline, “In space, no one can hear you scream.”
