James Nesbitt in “Missing You”
Haunted by the past: A detective’s former fiancé reappears in ‘Missing You’

Welcome in the new year with something familiar and reliable, like a good British mystery miniseries, before diving into the deep end of resolutions. Get cozy and settle in for a binge-watch of the latest Harlan Coben adaptation, “Missing You,” premiering Wednesday, Jan. 1, on Netflix.

“Slow Horses” star Rosalind Eleazar is Det. Kat Donovan, a dedicated missing persons investigator who is thrust into a conspiracy that hits very close to home. Kat has spent the past 11 years rebuilding her life after the sudden disappearance of her fiancé, Josh (Ashley Walters, “Top Boy”), and the murder of her father, DS Clint Donovan (Sir Lenny Henry, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”).

Having left without a trace, Kat assumed for more than a decade that Josh’s disappearance from her life had something to do with her father’s death, but could never pick up the thread between them. When her friend Stacey (Jessica Plummer, “The Decameron”) pushes Kat to try out the dating app she signed her up for, Kat receives the shock of a lifetime when she swipes to see Josh’s profile.

Now able to start following the thread, it’s up to Kat to find out just who Josh really is and what he is a part of. Any evidence of Josh’s existence online has been wiped clean, so why has he popped up on a dating app? Is he connected to other missing persons cases?

Is it really him or is it a phantom profile? Over the five-episode limited series, Kat charges forward with her investigation, shedding light on long-buried secrets in dangerous corners of her precinct.

Starring alongside Eleazar’s Kat is Richard Armitage (“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” 2012) as DCI Ellis Stagger. Fans of Coben’s previous Netflix adaptations will not be surprised to hear Armitage’s name among the main cast of the new limited series — the British actor has starred in three series: “The Stranger” in 2020, “Stay Close” in 2021 and 2024’s earlier hit “Fool Me Once.”

Armitage spoke to Yahoo about starring in the Coben Netflix adaptations, joking, “I feel like I’m their lucky underpants now, so they won’t do one without me.” He went on to share a peek into his character in “Missing You,” saying, “It’s a slightly more inverted character than the former ones because we’re very, very unsure of his motives at the beginning.

“The essence of him is nefarious but, actually, he’s holding on to a secret which has a noble cause,” Armitage added.

Rounding out the “Missing You” cast are Steve Pemberton (“Happy Valley”) as Titus, Marc Warren (“Sexy Beast”) as Monte Leburne, Samantha Spiro (“Sex Education”) as nurse Sally Steiner, Lisa Faulkner (“Unforgotten”) as Dana Fells, Mary Malone (“Doctor Who”) as Aqua, James Nesbitt (“Bloodlands”) as Calligan and Matt Jay-Willis (“Wolves of War,” 2022) as Darryl.

In a trailer for the upcoming series, Kat is clearly consumed with the case. Folders, photos and documents decorate the floor of her home, always visible in case inspiration strikes. Two more missing people ramp up Kat’s need to urgently get to the bottom of it all, sending her on a wild ride complete with abductions, car chases and arson. “I don’t know what kind of truth you’re gonna find out there, but I don’t think you’re gonna like it,” a voice tells Kat over a tense scene of the detective investigating, armed with a knife.

“Missing You” marks Coben’s ninth collaboration with the streamer, with the 10th, an adaptation of his 2019 novel “Run Away,” planned next. British mystery thrillers are a perennially popular television genre, but in January 2024, “Fool Me Once” blew viewer expectations out of the water when 61 million Netflix users tuned in during the series’ first two weeks of streaming, starting the new year off with a binge-watch of its eight edge-of-your-seat engrossing episodes.

America and Reese Witherspoon’s (“Legally Blonde,” 2001) Hello Sunshine, this modernized iteration of the legacy series will be led by “Extreme Makeover” newcomers Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin (of “Get Organized with the Home Edit”), who replace former hosts Ty Pennington (“Battle on the Beach”), who hosted from 2004-2012, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson (“Modern Family”), who hosted a 10-episode run in 2020.

“The most widely recognized home makeover show to ever exist returns with Shearer and Teplin’s world-renowned organizational expertise to thoughtfully design and specifically tailor each home from the inside out,” a series description given by the network reads. “Like the original series, this reimagining will showcase heartwarming stories, inspired volunteers and mind-blowing builds for deserving families who give back to their communities.”

While new to “Extreme Makeover,” leads Shearer and Teplin bring plenty of expertise to the job as co-founders of the globally popular lifestyle brand The Home Edit, which later turned into a similarly named series on Netflix. Known for helping homeowners fall in love with organization — and for their one-of-a-kind aesthetic, offering a unique blend of form and function — the duo will meet deserving families in each and every episode of the show, helping families “evaluate and edit every single item they own, ultimately transforming not only their home but the way they live” (per ABC). To make their vision a reality, Shearer and Teplin will be joined by a talented team of contractors and designers from homebuilder Taylor Morrison, who is said to focus on reconfiguring the homes in question based on a family’s lifestyle and specific needs. Also along to help are designers Wendell Holland and Arianne Bellizaire. Holland, who is the Season 36 champion of “Survivor,” is the founder and chief designer at Beve Unlimited, a custom furniture company. Bellizaire, meanwhile, is the CEO and creative director of Arianne Bellizaire Interiors.

Cook or be cooked: ‘Hell’s Kitchen: Head Chefs Only’ returns with all-new episodes

Fend off the biting winter cold with the return of the hot as ever “Hell’s Kitchen,” airing a new episode Thursday, Jan. 2, on Fox.

On the long-running food competition series — with decades of content and a never-ending list of winners under its belt — you either win in a blaze of glory or you burn. Hoping to prove themselves, talented chefs from restaurants across the country enter the kitchen of the world’s most critical cook, Gordon Ramsay (“Kitchen Nightmares”), each hoping to prove their mettle as they compete in an intense culinary boot camp. During this 23rd season — now returning following a brief winter break — Ramsay has asked only the best of the best to complete his test, resulting in a season populated solely by competent and crafty head chefs.

Before the break, the chefs of Season 23 were asked to complete extensive dinner services, utilize secret ingredients, take part in challenging feats of collaboration and even work in harmony alongside the Yale Whiffenpoofs singing group, some crafting hits while others prepared to sing their swan song. As competitors have been eliminated one by one, only the most capable now remain to compete for a coveted position working within Ramsay’s growing restaurant empire.

When first asked about this year’s competition — in an interview given when Fox announced the series would be returning for both seasons 23 and 24 — Ramsay claimed: “This show just keeps getting better and better, and with Fox, ITV and A. Smith & Co.

bestof ...

Gordon Ramsay hosts “Hell’s Kitchen”

as my partners, you can expect even bigger challenges, stronger talent and more intense competition in ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ in the years to come.”

Allison Wallach, Head of Unscripted Programming at Fox Entertainment Studios, added that, “[Ever] since Gordon Ramsay and ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ premiered on Fox nearly two decades ago, they have been mainstays of American television. ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ was our first series with Gordon, marking the launch of one of Fox’s most successful creative partnerships ever and an important cornerstone in what has become global television’s most powerful cooking brand.”

Produced by ITV America’s ITV Entertainment in association with A. Smith & Co. Productions, “Hell’s Kitchen” returns Thursday, Jan. 2, on Fox.

BEST NEW YEAR’S EVE MOVIES

Jack Lemmon in “The Apartment”

“The Apartment” (1960): Director Billy Wilder’s Oscar-winning comedy-drama concludes on New Year’s Eve, as elevator operator Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine) makes her romantic

choice between corporate executive J.D. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray) and his recent employee, C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) — resulting in one of the most famous movie lines ever.

Appropriately, Turner Classic Movies presents the film on Tuesday, Dec. 31.

“The Poseidon Adventure” (1972): Not only does an enormous tidal wave overturn the S.S. Poseidon on New Year’s Eve, the cruise ship’s passengers are merrily crooning “Auld Lang Syne” at the moment the vessel begins to capsize.

Like many other sites, the Poseidon hasn’t yet gotten rid of its Christmas tree, which is lucky for those who climb it to survive.

“When Harry Met Sally ... “ (1989): Although the picture has a postscript beyond it, this comedy’s pivotal scene is set at a New Year’s Eve party where hopeless — and hapless — romantic

Sally (Meg Ryan) isn’t feeling very celebratory, until longtime confidant Harry (Billy Crystal) shows up and finally professes the feelings for her that took so long to develop.
