Times are tough. A deadly game with a life-changing purse awaiting the winner entices people surviving on the edge to risk it all for a chance at prosperity. The Emmy-winning global sensation “Squid Game” returns Thursday, Dec. 26, for a second season on Netflix. If you’re ready to hang on to the edge of your seat during the intense, emotional action after the holiday cheer, then get settled in for a binge.

Lee Jung-jae stars in “Squid Game”
Back in the game: A returning player tries to bring down the ‘Squid Game’

The first season of “Squid Game” depicted the 33rd annual secretive event in which 456 carefully chosen players, secluded on a private island estate, competed in a series of children’s games — with lethal consequences for failure. The last player standing collected a grand prize of 45.6 billion South Korean won — 100 million won for each player who died in the game — more than enough to start over with if they can get over the brutality of the games.

In a trailer for the upcoming season, last season’s winner, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae, “The Acolyte”), requests to return to the island for entry into another round of killer schoolyard games. This time, however, he intends to put an end to the exploitative games forever. A nearly impossible task on its own, Gi-hun’s quest is made even more difficult as he tries to convince a new batch of desperate players to fight back when the glowing, golden piggy bank hangs over their bunks.

Returning alongside Lee Jung-jae is Lee Byung-hun (“The Magnificent Seven,” 2016) as the Front Man, the director of the games. Gi-hun and police officer Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon, “Little Women”), another returning character from the first season, have the Front Man in an uncomfortable position with their knowledge of the games and desire to destroy them.

While other officers initially brushed off Gi-hun’s wild tale of being abducted to the games in the first season, it was Jun-ho who set off to investigate. He sneaked onto the island and found that his long-lost brother, In-ho, was not in fact missing all of these years but had become the Front Man. The two faced off and Jun-ho was shot in a literal cliffhanger but managed to mysteriously survive.

Also returning is Gong Yoo (“Train to Busan,” 2016) as the Salesman. New cast additions this season include Yim Si-wan (“Road to Boston”), Kang Ha-neul (“Insider”), Park Gyu-young (“A Good Day to Be a Dog”), Lee Jin-wook (“Sweet Home”), Park Sung-hoon (“Queen of Tears”), Yang Dong-geun (“Moving”), Kang Ae-shim (“A Virtuous Business”), Lee David (“The Fortress,” 2017), Choi Seunghyun (“Secret Message”), Roh Jae-won (“Daily Dose of Sunshine”), Jo Yu-ri (“Mimicus”) and Won Ji-an (“Heartbeat”).

If you missed all of the hype around the show’s debut season the first time around, here is a quick primer on the events that took place. A critical commentary on class structure and capitalism in South Korea, the first season of “Squid Game” was about a group of people who were all living under the weight of massive debts. Significant gambling debts had made Gi-hun an unreliable father and son, leaving him little to lose when the Salesman offered him a chance to win his way out from under through the mysterious games.

Accepting the offer, Gi-hun was drugged and abducted to the games’ grounds, waking just early enough to get a few glimpses of his surroundings and the uniformed game enforcers transporting them. Clad in numbered tracksuits, the 456 players soon began participating in the gruesome games. One wrong step, a shaky hand or a bad toss of a marble led to instant death for those unfortunate players, their portion of the prize dropping into the piggy bank after the game. Skeptical from the beginning, Gi-hun uncovered a conspiracy within the games that, even after his win, urged him to seek revenge.

Series director and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk (“Silenced,” 2011) confirmed that “Squid Game” will end with its third season, planned release in 2025. However, that’s not the end of the games on Netflix. Reality competition series “Squid Game: The Challenge” was one of the most talked-about series of 2023, replicating the games themselves and ethos of the scripted series without assassinations.

Squid Game: Unleashed, a new mobile game from Netflix, lets players compete in digital versions of the games from the show. Finally, there are rumors around Hollywood, reported by Deadline, that director David Fincher (“The Killer,” 2023) is in talks to adapt an English-language version of the Korean series for the streamer. Get ready for more dystopian thrills when a new season of “Squid Game” premieres Thursday, Dec. 26, on Netflix.

Big name bakers: Actors tackle the tent in the ‘Bake-Off’ holiday special

Grab your seat at the table: the third annual special “The Great American Baking Show: Celebrity Holiday” is available to stream now on Roku.

Riffing off “The Great British Baking Show,” this festive event turns the high-stakes competition on its head, offering a more relaxed vibe — at least for some contestants — as some of Hollywood’s top celebrities take their turn in the famed “Bake-Off” tent.

Hosted by “Severance” actor Zach Cherry and comedian Casey Wilson (“Adult Best Friends,” 2024) — who are, of course, joined by the incomparable Paul Hollywood and Pure Leith, two esteemed judges from “The Great British Baking Show” — the special keeps quite close to the show’s normal format, with competitors asked to compete in three rounds: a signature bake, a blind technical challenge and a showstopper surprise.

“Like those who have come before them, the quintet will descend upon the show’s iconic white tent in the English countryside to compete in a series of festive baking assignments to win the coveted Star Baker crown,” People magazine explained in an exclusive article regarding the show.

This year, Emmy nominee Anthony Anderson (“Black-ish”), comedian Rob Riggle (“Step Brothers,” 2008), “SNL” cast member Vanessa Bayer, award-winning host Loni Love (“The Real”) and actor Susie Essman (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) step in as the bakers in question, each bringing their own “spice” to the competition, despite lacking the skills held by most “Bake-Off” competitors.

As veteran Leith explains in a trailer for the special: “The great thing about American celebrities is they’re there to enjoy themselves.”

bestof ...

“I have no idea what I’m doing,” Essman says, proving the judge’s point only seconds later. “I’m not winning this one, I’m telling you right now.”

Others, however, are angling for a win. “I have been practicing,” Bayer insists. “At the end of the day, I’m not here to bake friends.”

Previous years of this holiday special have seen the likes of D’Arcy Carden (“The Good Place”), Liza Koshy (“Work It,” 2020), former NFL player Marshawn Lynch (“Bottoms,” 2023), Nat Faxon (“The Way Back,” 2013), Chloe Fineman (“Saturday Night Live”), Joel Kim Booster (“Fire Island,” 2022), Arturo Castro (“Broad City”), NBA player DeAndre Jordan, Joel McHale (“Community”), Heather McMahan (“Love Hard,” 2021), Ego Nwodim (“Saturday Night Live”) and Phoebe Robinson (“Everything’s Trash”) compete.

But once again, only one can win the 2024 edition of “The Great American Baking Show: Celebrity Holiday,” now streaming on Roku.

BEST SCREEN SANTAS

Edmund Gwenn, “Miracle on 34th Street” (1947): Arguably the ultimate screen Santa — who has a tough time proving he’s the real deal — Gwenn won an Oscar for his performance in this perennial holiday favorite, which Paramount+ and Peacock are currently streaming.

Stan Francis, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’’ (1964, TV): It wouldn’t be the season without the sound of this Santa who asks outcast Rudolph to guide his sleigh. The success of this program launched a whole set of “Animagic” stop-motion-animation specials from the Rankin-Bass studio. Freeform gives the special telecasts on Sunday, Dec. 22, Tuesday, Dec. 24, and Wednesday, Dec. 25.

John Call, “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians’’ (1964): Even when spirited away by aliens — with a young Pia Zadora among them — Santa keeps an upbeat demeanor in this cult classic.

Jeff Gillen, “A Christmas Story” (1983): He’s on the screen only briefly, but this department-store Santa is memorable for the way he sends an overanxious Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) sliding down backward out of his presence. The picture will have its traditional 24-hour marathon on TBS and TNT starting Tuesday, Dec. 24.

Ken Hudson Campbell, “Home Alone” (1990): Given what he goes through when his vacationing family accidentally leaves him behind with thieves, resourceful young Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) deserves a session with Santa. ABC airs the movie Tuesday, Dec. 24; Freeform also shows it Sunday, Dec. 22, Monday, Dec. 23, and Wednesday, Dec. 25.

Tim Allen, “The Santa Clause” (1994): Morphing into the new Santa proves complicated for a divorced dad whose belief in Kris Kringle has a payoff he never expected. The film gets an ABC run Sunday, Dec. 22.

Richard Attenborough, “Miracle on 34th Street” (1994): The aforementioned Gwenn is a very hard act to follow in the role of the man who claims to be Santa, but skilled actor-director Attenborough puts his own effective spin on the part. Peacock is also streaming this version.
