Ralph Macchio, Yuji Okumoto and Courtney Heggeler in “Cobra Kai”

Rolling up the mats: ‘Cobra Kai’ dojo prepares to close doors after Season 6

After five complete seasons — across two different platforms — “Cobra Kai” may know better than most series what it takes to survive in the business. Back in the dojo to begin its sixth and final season, the Karate Kid franchise spinoff series has big plans for the year ahead. It all begins Thursday, July 18, on Netflix.

“Cobra Kai,” the karate-centric dramedy series from creators Jon Hurwitz (“Obliterated”), Josh Heald (“Hot Tub Time Machine,” 2010) and Hayden Schlossberg (“Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle,” 2004), had audiences and “The Karate Kid” (1984) fans gripped from its very first episode back in May 2018. At that time, the budding series was an original YouTube Red (now YouTube Premium) production, but in 2020, when YouTube opted to sweep the leg on the series, Netflix picked it up and kept the action rolling just as it had previously done with shows such as “Arrested Development,” “Lucifer” and “Manifest.”

An expansion of what fans of the franchise are now calling the Miyagiverse — thanks to the late Pat Morita’s (“Mulan,” 1998) classic role as Mr. Miyagi in the original Karate Kid film franchise — “Cobra Kai” follows the 1984 film’s lead protagonist and antagonist, Daniel “Daniel-san” LaRusso (Ralph Macchio, “My Cousin Vinny,” 1992) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka, “How I Met You Mother”), now grown up and reuniting their spirited feud thanks to their ties to opposing dojos in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley.

Despite the series having been pretty high-octane until the surprisingly tame Season 5 finale, the cast and crew wish for fans of the show to note that there is a lot planned for the coming sixth season.

“With Cobra Kai eliminated from the Valley,” reads the official Netflix description, “our senseis and students must decide if and how they will compete in the Sekai Taikai — the world championships of karate.”

While many of the actors have remained tight-lipped about the details of Season 6, others, like Gianni DeCenzo (“Coop and Cami Ask the World”), who plays Demetri Alexopoulos, have been more open to sharing their thoughts and feelings during interviews — even if sometimes the answer is unexpected. For example, when What’s On Netflix reporter Jacob Robinson asked what’s in store for Demetri in Season 6, DeCenzo replied: “He slips and falls and dies.”

“No ...” DeCenzo soon clarified, “He’s become better at karate. He got a super hot, super popular girlfriend. Things have been going great for him. He ended up in the semifinals of the All-Valley tournament, which was his first tournament ever, and it was terrific. So yeah, I want to see him grow even more in Season 6. And yeah, I can’t give out any spoilers, but it will be a great season.”

“Cobra Kai” also stars Martin Kove (“The Karate Kid,” 1984), Xolo Mariduena (“Blue Beetle,” 2023), Jacob Bertrand (“Ready Player One,” 2018), Mary Mouser (“Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” 2014), Peyton List (“Bunk’d”), Courtney Henggeler (“Mom”), Tanner Buchanan (“Designated Survivor”), Vanessa Rubio (“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”), Dallas Dupree Young (“The Big Show Show”), Yuji Okumoto (“The Karate Kid Part II,” 1986), Alicia Hannah-Kim (“Minx”), Griffin Santopietro (“The Week Of,” 2018) and Oona O’Brien (“Sky High,” 2020).

Soon, a real angel named Al (Christopher Lloyd) shows up in response to Roger’s prayers, and Anaheim’s hopeless coach (Danny Glover) is shocked to see his team on a winning streak.

“Snowpiercer” - Season 4 (AMC/AMC+ — July 21, Season Premiere)

Moving to AMC and AMC+ from TNT for its fourth and final season, this series, set in a near future where the earth has become an uninhabitable, frozen tundra, follows the inhabitants of a luxury train populated with the world’s only remaining humans as it circles the globe. It explores the revolution that takes place when the classes clash on the train, as after several years onboard the never-ending rail journey, the lowest-class “Talies” revolt against their living conditions and the train’s strict class divisions.

ty-defying couple as they “take their relationship to terrifying new heights

considered trespassing — and completed with minimal or nonexistent safety precautions in place. But Nikolau and Beerkus aren’t just climbing buddies — they’re also in love.”

The documentary itself chronicles the couple as they prepare for their most challenging climb yet, scaling all 118 stories of the aforementioned Merdeka, including its 160-meter (524 foot) spire. With over 200 hours of footage — shot across seven years and six countries, featuring many of the couple’s most intense climbs — the film acts as an intimate portrait of trust and teamwork, according to the streamer, who then says: “At other times, it’s a tense, cover-your-eyes thriller that leaves you guessing how a relationship survives this kind of pressure.”

“There’s a danger to romance,” Zimbalist told Netflix’s Queue. “It crushes us. It breaks our hearts. It breaks our hopes. Here, that danger is material. If the love falls apart, if the trust falls apart, it’s life or death. That felt like such a potent way of taking this amorphous sense that we all have in our romance and externalizing it and making it tangible.”

Produced by Nick Spicer (“Seven Veils,” 2023) and Tamir Ardon (“BlackBerry,” 2023) for XYZ Films and Chris Smith (“Tiger King”) for Library Films, “Skywalkers: A Love Story” makes its debut this Friday, July 19, only on Netflix.

Global grub: Chef René Redzepi goes worldwide

Directed by visionary filmmaker Cary Joji Fukunaga (“Beasts of No Nation,” 2015), the mouth-watering and eye-opening new docuseries “Omnivore” premieres on Apple TV+ this Friday, July 19.

Created and narrated by the revered chef René Redzepi — an esteemed culinary mastermind, a leading voice in the modern culinary world and the co-owner of the world-renowned restaurant Noma in Copenhagen, Denmark (recognized as the World’s Best Restaurant five times over) — this eight-part series takes viewers “on an immersive journey into the world of food,” according to Apple TV, “exploring the profound beauty and intricate complexities of the human experience.”

Here, ingredients are the star of the show, acting as a key to connection for us all. Called “a journey into the soul of food culture” by Travel + Leisure, episodes of “Omnivore” follow Redzepi as he begins his global mission to explore culinary traditions, all the while highlighting human ingenuity and local efforts to conserve and protect what our planet has to offer.

Apple TV explains: “Each episode of ‘Omnivore’ celebrates the cultivation, transformation and consumption of eight of the world’s most essential ingredients, including bananas, chilies, coffee, corn, pork, rice, salt and tuna, revealing how they serve as the cornerstones of global cultural heritage.”

Throughout the course of its first season, the series visits endless destinations, including Bali, Colombia, Denmark, Djibouti, France, India, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Rwanda, Serbia, South Korea, Spain and Thailand, along with many locations throughout the United States.

“Through the lens of eight unique ingredients, we traverse our delicious planet and meet the diverse

people who inhabit it. We’ve trekked across five continents, unearthing countless stories along the way,” Redzepi recently told Travel + Leisure. “This journey has reinforced one undeniable truth: food is everything. You can tell any story worth telling through what we cook and how we eat. Because food is never just food; it’s a window into our lives, our history and our world.”

“This show is a testament to what makes food truly remarkable — the ingredients, the people, the stories, the sheer magic of cooking,” he continues, “’Omnivore’ isn’t just a food show; it’s a journey into the soul of food culture and its vibrant community.”

With Redzepi himself acting as executive producer, alongside Matt Goulding of “Anthony Bourdain: Explore Parts Unknown,” “Omnivore” debuts Friday, July 19, on Apple TV+.

BEST PETER BOGDANOVICH MOVIES

“Targets” (1968): The late Bogdanovich moved from film criticism into filmmaking with this melodrama that gave horror icon Boris Karloff arguably his last significant big-screen role. Turner Classic Movies offers this as part of a night of features produced by Roger Corman on Wednesday, July 17.

“Paper Moon” (1973): Tatum O’Neal became the youngest Oscar winner in history by partnering with her father Ryan, under Bogdanovich’s direction, to play Depression-era con artists.

Turner Classic Movies shows the film Friday, July 19.

“Daisy Miller” (1974): Bogdanovich gave Cybill Shepherd another showcase in the title role of Henry James’ 19th-century tale of an independent-minded American touring Europe.

“Saint Jack” (1979): Ben Gazzara is typically excellent as an American looking to make a killing with questionable business activities in Singapore.

“They All Laughed” (1981): Detectives and those they follow are the subjects of this comedy that adds Audrey Hepburn and Dorothy Stratten to such Bogdanovich veterans as Ben Gazzara and John Ritter.

“Mask” (1985): Under a bounty of Oscar-winning makeup, Eric Stoltz does moving work as a youngster whose facial deformity makes his mother (Cher) only more determined to facilitate a “normal” life for him.

“Noises Off ... “ (1992): Though this comedy about a stage troupe ultimately works better on stage, Bogdanovich’s film remains worthwhile for a cast led by Michael Caine, Carol Burnett and John Ritter.

“The Thing Called Love” (1993): A terrific tale of Nashville hopefuls, Bogdanovich’s tuneful tale offers an excellent score and terrific performances.

“The Cat’s Meow” (2001): A Hollywood murder mystery is the basis for this drama boasting another superb Bogdanovich cast that includes Kirsten Dunst, Cary Elwes, Edward Herrmann and (as Charlie Chaplin) Eddie Izzard.

Peter Bogdanovich directed and starred in “Targets”

Tom Hanks.
