On the case: A teenager searches for answers in ‘A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder’
The classic British crime drama takes a young adult turn in the thrilling new series “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder,” premiering Thursday, Aug. 1, on Netflix. Starring Emma Myers (“Wednesday”) as 17-year-old sleuth Pip Fitz-Amobi, the six-episode series follows Pip as she reinvestigates the murder-suicide of a popular high school senior and her boyfriend that shocked her hometown of Little Kilton five years previous.
Always fascinated by the case, Pip uses a school project to pick at the seams of the police work that quickly determined that Andie Bell (India Lillie Davies, “Bridgerton”) was killed by her boyfriend, Sal Singh (Rahul Pattni, “Casualty”), who then killed himself after being named a suspect. Something has always told Pip that there was more to the story of their deaths, and her independent research project happens to be the perfect opportunity to explore her hunch.
Pip finds herself entangled in the dark, dangerous side of her small town as she looks into what really happened to Andie and Sal. Poking around in the shadows and talking to people who would much rather be left alone makes the teenage detective a target, and while she makes headway with her project, she puts herself in danger’s crosshairs. Tracing the strings of evidence Pip finds as she investigates reveals a violent drug scene full of secrets and ties to Andie.
Like Holmes and Watson or Cagney and Lacey, great detectives work best in pairs. Pip recruits Sal’s younger brother Ravi (Zain Iqbal, “All Crazy Random,” 2022) to help her get to the bottom of the case and clear his brother’s name. Ravi was the last person to see Sal alive, and both he and Pip share the belief in his innocence and concern that the real killer is still free, lurking around town.
Also starring in “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” are Anna Maxwell Martin (“Good Omens”) as Pip’s mother, Leanne Fitz-Amobi; Gary Beadle (“The Gentlemen”) as Pip’s stepfather, Victor Amobi; Mathew Baynton (“Ghosts”) as teacher Elliot Ward; Henry Ashton (“My Lady Jane”) as Sal’s friend Max Hastings; Carla Woodcock (“Such Brave Girls”) as Andie’s sister, Becca Bell; Yasmin Al-Khudhairi (“Rye Lane,” 2023) as Mr. Ward’s daughter, Naomi Ward; Jude Morgan-Collie (“Here We Go”) as Pip’s friend Connor Reynolds; Raiko Gohara (“Red Rose”) as Pip’s neighbor Zach Chen; Asha Banks (“The Magic Flute,” 2022) as Pip’s best friend, Cara Ward; and Yali Topol Margalith (“The Tattooist of Auschwitz”) as Pip’s friend Lauren Gibson.
The series is adapted from the 2019 novel of the same name by author Holly Jackson. The first in a trilogy of novels, there is room for further seasons of the show, though executive producers Matthew Read and Frith Tiplady (both formerly producers on Netflix’s hit gangster drama series, “Peaky Blinders”) confirmed in an interview with Variety last October that the first season covers the events of the first book and has a real ending. Rest easy, no maddening cliffhangers to be expected here.
Speaking with BBC, Jackson shared what she thought made the novel a hit with so many readers now waiting for the series to drop, saying, “We have lots of teenage angst and antics and those laugh-outloud moments ... and then, suddenly, you’re slapped around the face with the dark adult world of a crime thriller.”

Cue the ‘cue-ers: ‘BBQ Brawl’ goes full-speed ahead in fifth season
Sunny Anderson, Bobby Flay and Michael Voltaggio in “BBQ Brawl”
It’s summer, which means that steaks, skewers and smokey brisket are all sizzling on the grill — and that “BBQ Brawl” is back, with this exciting season continuing Monday, July 29, on Food Network.
This season, Bobby Flay (“Beat Bobby Flay”) is joined by returning host Sunny Anderson (“The Kitchen”) and newcomer Michael Voltaggio (“Young & Hungry”), as the trio coach a roster of the best barbecue wranglers from across the country, putting the pitmasters through a series of increasingly difficult challenges in an attempt to determine who really is the “Master of ‘Cue.” Each dish is judged by a panel including Carson Kressley (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”), Rodney Scott (“Young Americans”) and Brooke Williamson (“Beachside Brawl”). At the end of the competition, only one cook can come out on top — and earn bragging rights for their given coach — and now, halfway through the season, the game is getting hotter than ever before.
Back during the season premiere, Flay, Anderson and Votaggio welcomed 12 new contestants to the Lonestar State, where the cooks were split into teams, each given a mentor to guide them through the season. After some flavor-packed sliders hit the grill (and then the judges table), the teams dove in for a challenge highlighting surf and turf. While some hit
bestof ...
the mark right off the bat, others floundered in the waves of competition, leading to dry mouths all around.
The following week, the contenders lucky enough to continue forward were introduced to the coveted “PIG-asus” trophy — a “BBQ Brawl” tradition — the reward up for grabs at the end of a “Texas-sized” relay race, in which judges Kressley, Scott and Williamson “cooked up some fun and games” (per Food Network), leading to a team brawl packed with advantages for the next grill-off.
Once the race began, it never truly stopped. Last week, we even saw the team’s mentors — Food Network stars Flay, Anderson and Voltaggio — jump into the game, getting their hands dirty as they took part in an advantage challenge “designed to keep the judges fueled ‘on-the-go,’” according to the network, inspiring the brawlers before they faced their own feat, crafting feasts inspired by the countless regions of American barbecue.
Now, with shocking ingredients offered in their advantage challenge, the team captains must step up their game and face the fire, with contestants depending on their expertise — and only one piece of equipment — during an all-new episode of “BBQ Brawl,” premiering Monday, July 29, on Food Network.

BEST FRANK SINATRA MOVIES
“On the Town” (1949): Sinatra, Gene Kelly and Jules Munshin live it up energetically as sailors who pack in all the fun they can while on a 24-hour leave in New York City.
“From Here to Eternity” (1953): Sinatra’s fight to land the role of Maggio in this military drama about the Pearl Harbor attack paid off big, since he won a supporting Oscar (as did co-star Donna Reed).
“Guys and Dolls” (1955): Sinatra is gambler Nathan Detroit in the screen version of the famously sassy hit musical.
“The Tender Trap” (1955): A major highlight of this romantic comedy is the opening, in which Sinatra shows off the wide screen by walking toward the camera singing the title song.
“The Joker Is Wild” (1957): Sinatra is terrific in the true story of comedian Joe E. Lewis, who incurred the wrath of mobsters in a drastic way.
“The Manchurian Candidate” (1962): A Korean War veteran’s (Sinatra) hunch that a former comrade (Laurence Harvey) is being prepped to commit an assassination fuels this controversial thriller, which Sinatra also produced. This leads a Sinatra tribute night that Turner Classic Movies will present Wednesday, July 31.
“Robin and the 7 Hoods” (1964): Sinatra introduced his song standard “My Kind of Town” in this highly entertaining gangster spoof featuring much of the “Rat Pack,” plus Bing Crosby and Peter Falk.
“Assault on a Queen” (1966): Rod Serling wrote the screenplay for this crime caper, with Sinatra playing the leader of a gang planning to rob the Queen Mary ocean liner.
“Tony Rome” (1967): Sinatra is suited ideally to the title role of a laid-back Miami private eye who becomes entangled with a wealthy, troubled family. A sequel, “Lady in Cement,” was released a year later.
“The Detective” (1968): In this very adult police drama, Sinatra plays a veteran investigator whose murder probe hints at corruption within his department.
