‘The Umbrella Academy’ siblings face the final timeline

Stripped of their powers and facing new foes that want them dead, the Hargreeves siblings are back in the fourth and final season of “The Umbrella Academy,” premiering Thursday, Aug. 8, on Netflix.

Stuck — for now, at least — as mere mortals with no powers and feeling enemies encroaching upon them, there’s no telling just what is about to happen to the Hargreeves in this final 10-episode season. On top of past time jumps and their resulting paradoxes affecting the timeline the siblings now find themselves in, a new group, calling themselves The Keepers, don’t believe their own reality and see a day of reckoning on the horizon.

The formerly estranged superhero siblings, brought together by the apparent death of their father, are now just strange, as they have spent the past three seasons joined at the hip, taking on a world out to get them. Spontaneously born on the same day to different mothers all over the world and adopted and raised by Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore, “For All Mankind”) at the Umbrella Academy, each of the seven siblings possesses a unique power.

Elliot Page (“Tales of the City”) is Viktor, who can control soundwaves; Tom Hopper (“Black Sails”) is Luther, an astronaut with super strength; David Castaneda (“Most Dangerous Game”) is the telekinetic Diego; Emmy Raver-Lampman (“The Beekeeper,” 2024) is Allison, who controls reality with her well-placed rumors; Robert Sheehan (“Misfits”) is Klaus, who is able to speak to the dead; Aidan Gallagher (“Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn”) is the time-jumping Five; and Justin H. Min (“Beef”) is Ben, whose trusty tentacles are always at the ready.

Joining this season is David Cross (“You Hurt My Feelings,” 2023) as Sy Grossman, a family man on a desperate hunt for his daughter. Returning this season is Ritu Arya (“Feel Good”) as Lila Pitts, another superhuman with the ability to mirror anyone else’s power. Lila wasn’t raised with the Hargreeves as a member of the academy, but she’s joined the crew of reunited siblings in adulthood.

Ben is back from the dead this season, having died during one of the siblings’ missions years ago. At first appearing only to Klaus as a ghost, the rest of the Hargreeves encountered him again in an alternate timeline where he was a member of a different superhero family at the Sparrow Academy. In the final season, all of the siblings are reunited on the same timeline, though Ben still has no memory of the Umbrella Academy, and it’s revealed in an official trailer that the siblings cannot recall any concrete memories about Ben’s death.

They all have a lot to catch up on while some new enemies are hot on their tails. New cast members include a real-life married couple, portraying what else but an on-screen married couple. Nick Offerman (“Parks and Recreation”) and Megan Mullally (“Party Down”) are Drs. Gene and Jean Thibedeau, two seemingly normal Midwestern community college professors teaching a radical curriculum.

Somehow, the Thibedeaus have pieced together the puzzle constructed by the Hargreeves’ time-jumping chaos and are keen to share their theories with others who are open to believing their reality is a lie. “That tentacle boy is the key to understanding all the timelines,” Gene lectures in the trailer for the upcoming season, training all eyes on Ben.

Netflix has teased fans with Easter egg-filled posters, a full set of episode titles, thrilling trailers and even a peek at a page of the season premiere’s script. But so far, cast and crew have remained tight-lipped about what’s to come during the show’s final season. In an interview with RadioTimes in March, Page shared all he could about the upcoming season, saying, “I’m not allowed to say anything, but it’s gonna be, as per usual, very fun, classic Hargreeves chaos and hijinks.”

Most significantly, this will be the first year that any adult woman can compete in the Miss USA pageant, regardless of age, marital status or parental status. Prior to this 2024 competition, all contestants were required to be younger than 28, and 2023’s competition was the first in which Miss USA would accept divorced, maritally annulled, married or widowed women and mothers to compete in the pageant. This modernization acts as an important step forward for not only the Miss USA organization but for the universal pageant circuit as well, seeing as the new Miss USA titleholder will go on to represent the United States at the Miss Universe 2024 competition at the end of this year.

“The Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants have captivated audiences for decades with their unwavering commitment to making a positive impact in their communities,” explains Laylah Rose, president and CEO of the Miss USA Organization. “Through our exciting partnership with The CW, a blend of nostalgia and innovation, we are excited to showcase this prestigious competition and remain a beloved staple in family homes everywhere.”

Proud to crown “some of the most successful and influential women in the world,” Miss USA modernizes its legacy with this 73rd annual pageant, airing Sunday, Aug. 4, on The CW.

‘Blue’-worthy

bakers: Fair-fanatics compete in all-new baking competition

Sprinkled with sugar, spice and everything nice, the brand-new series “Blue Ribbon Baking Championship” premieres with an eight-episode debut Friday, Aug. 9, on Netflix.

“For over 100 years, the American state fair has been the proving ground for the most wildly talented bakers across the United States. Now, for the first time ever, blue ribbon-winning bakers from state fairs across the nation get the chance to compete against each other in the Blue Ribbon Baking Championship,’’ Netflix shared in a recent news release.

This exciting new culinary competition invites 10 award-winning pastry makers from across the United States to leave their local fairs to come and compete against each other in one final, masterful bake-off — one that promises its winner the biggest blue ribbon in the country, alongside a $100,000 prize.

Hosted by actor and comedian Jason Biggs (best known for his appearances in the American Pie film franchise) and his right-hand woman, Emmy-winning food expert Sandra Lee (“Semi-Homemade Cooking with Sandra Lee”), this blue ribbon bonanza will see the best of the best competing to make history as the series’ first winner, with creativity applauded just as thoroughly as talent.

Throughout the trailer, fans are offered glimpses of some incredible feats of culinary creation, from cookies made to look like intricate works of embroidery, to tiered cakes stacking

bestof ...

layers of unique flavors. “We’re talking cakes, pies and anything else they can dream up,” Biggs can be heard explaining over footage from the upcoming episodes.

However, “beating the best in the nation isn’t as easy as pie,” Netflix warns, as the competition will not only be judged by Lee herself, but also by award-winning artisan baker Bryan Ford and the White House’s former pastry chef, Bill Yosses.

“Each contestant already has a blue ribbon to their name, but to win this competition, they’ll have to ‘make like dough’ and rise to the top to be the best in the nation,” Netflix explains. Only one baker will take the cake, offering the most delicious, inventive and “fair-worthy” treats.

The big blue ribbon hangs in the balance as “Blue Ribbon Baking Championship” premieres its first season Friday, Aug. 9, on Netflix.

BEST JULIE ANDREWS MOVIES

“Mary Poppins” (1964): The role that brought Andrews from Broadway to the screen also earned her an Oscar, as the Disney incarnation of novelist P.L. Travers’s literally high-flying English nanny.

“The Sound of Music” (1965): Well, of course. The Rodgers & Hammerstein classic gave Andrews a milestone movie role as Maria, the novice nun turned novice governess to the Von Trapp children.

“Hawaii” (1966): Andrews’s acting is solid in this epic based on the James A. Michener best seller, with fellow “Sound of Music” alum Heather Menzies and Bette Midler also in the cast.

“Thoroughly Modern Millie” (1967): The genre’s leading lady then, only Andrews — along with co-stars Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Channing — could sell a musical about white slavery in the Roaring ‘20s.

“Star!” (1968): While this wasn’t as successful as other musicals of hers, Andrews gave the role of performer Gertrude Lawrence her all in working again with “The Sound of Music” director Robert Wise.

“10” (1979): In a film she made with husband Blake Edwards, Andrews became the romantic rival of Bo Derek (who was made a pop-culture icon by the film) for Dudley Moore.

“S.O.B.” (1981): Famous largely for Andrews’s highly uncharacteristic nude scene, Edwards’ satire of Hollywood made many pungent points about the movie business.

“Victor/Victoria” (1982): Working again with Edwards, Andrews pulled off a tricky role — a struggling performer posing as a female impersonator - though co-star Robert Preston nearly steals the show.

“The Princess Diaries” (2001): Andrews was in fine, properly regal form in director Garry Marshall’s comedy as the royal grandmother of a teen (Anne Hathaway) who didn’t suspect her lineage.

“Shrek 2” (2004): The unmistakable sound of Andrews informed the character of Queen Lillian, a voice role she would reprise in two more sequels in the popular animated franchise.
