An unexpected galactic journey begins in ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’
One kid with a big imagination sends himself and his friends on an unbelievable adventure across the galaxy in the new series “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” premiering on the Disney+ streaming service Tuesday, Dec. 3. Ravi Cabot-Conyers (“Encanto,” 2021) stars in the family fantasy show as Wim, a young student on a peaceful planet whose head is firmly planted among the stars. His desire for adventure sends him and his friends KB (Kyriana Kratter, “Bunk’d”), Neel (Robert Timothy Smith, “Mythic Quest”) and Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong, “Anne With an E”) blasting through space.
Deep in a forest, the four friends discover what appears to be an abandoned Jedi temple. Quick to explore it, one wrong step sends them catapulting across the galaxy. Lost in space and trying to find their way home, the kid crew teams up with a possible Jedi, Jod Na Nawood (portrayed by Jude Law, “The New Pope”). Across the eight-episode series, per Disney, “finding their way home — and meeting unlikely allies and enemies — will be a greater adventure than they ever imagined.”
Also starring in the new series are Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin,” 2022) and Tunde Adebimpe (“Twisters,” 2024) as Fern’s mom, Fara, and Wim’s dad, Wendle, respectively. Nick Frost (“The Nevers”) lends his voice to droid SM 33, who series co-creator Jon Watts (“The Old Man”) described to People in July as “a rusty old, cranky droid that sort of reluctantly helps the kids along the way. ... The other thing about him is that he’s the first mate of a mysterious ship.”
Law also spoke to People about joining the famed franchise with “Skeleton Crew,” saying, “it is a fun place to be, the universe of Star Wars.” He added, “there are great references to old films and recent episodes and series. There’s a lot of originality and I hope that will bring the feeling of fun to those who watch it.”
The key words “fun” and “originality” can also be used to describe a big reveal about the upcoming series. Episode director David Lowery (“The Green Knight,” 2021) told Empire in October that the Teek, creatures only previously seen in the mostly-forgotten Ewok movies from the mid-1980s, make a grand reappearance in the new series. “I was most excited about having hand puppets on set,” Lowery said about the practical magic behind the space critters.
“It’s the most ancient technology being used with the most cutting-edge technology, simultaneously. That combination was absolutely magical,” Lowery shared about mixing media to make both the puppetry and the special effects come to life. About seeing it all come together, he said, “in the final episode it’s just a hand puppet in the middle of this crazy Volume set. The cognitive dissonance of seeing those two things together, live in front of you, is absolutely incredible.”

She teams up with a hot-tempered Bostonian mobster (Chris Diamantopoulos), and a mild-mannered French-Canadian security guard (Guillaume Cyr) to carry out a multi-million dollar heist on Quebec’s maple syrup surplus. Jamie Lee Curtis guest stars.

As each course is served, it becomes clearer and clearer, however, that the chef’s meal may be far more than decadent — it’s deadly as well.
“Hidden Figures” (Available Now)
This acclaimed drama film tells the incredible, untold story of Katherine Jonson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae) — brilliant African American women working at NASA who served as the brains behind the launch into orbit of astronaut John Glenn (Glen Powell), a stunning achievement that turned around the space race. The visionary trio crossed all gender and racial line and inspired generations.

opportunity to work alongside therapists and counselors to “navigate issues of jealousy, anger and intimacy through group therapy and nontraditional approaches, including hypnotherapy, pleasure mapping, sand tray therapy and off-grid excursions into the desert,” the network explains.
Taking part in this season’s so-called boot camp are familiar faces from across the franchise, including Ari and Bini (“90 Day Fiancé”), Brandon and Julia (“90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?”), Gino and Jasmine (“90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?”), Rob and Sophie (“90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?”), Stacey and Florian (“Darcey & Stacey”) and Natalie and Josh (“90 Day: The Single Life”). Once the process is complete, each of the couples will then decide if they plan to stay together or part ways during a final “all-ornothing” commitment ceremony.
Making its debut with the premiere of this second “Last Resort” season, a brand-new companion series called “Last Resort: Between the Sheets” will air Mondays following episodes of “90 Day: The Last Resort.” According to Warner Bros. Discovery, “the new series is an unfiltered, one-hour after-show that dives deeper into each week’s episodes.”
Their description goes on to share that “cast members from this season of ‘90 Day: The Last Resort’ will provide behind-the-scenes commentary and personal reflections on their experiences at the resort. Through never-before-seen footage and unique therapist interviews, viewers will get an exclusive insider look at what really went down when the cameras were and weren’t rolling. This has all the juicy secrets, hilarious anecdotes and emotional moments as your favorite couples dissect jaw-dropping scenes.”
From executive producers Juliette Marais (“Match Me Abroad”), Raquel Gruber (“Loren & Alexei: After the 90 Days”) and Karl Bauer (“Breaking Amish”), “90 Day: The Last Resort” returns with its second season Monday, Dec. 2, on TLC.

Festive fakers: ‘Is It Cake?’
takes on the holidays with series all-stars
From Thanksgiving turkeys to cookies left for Santa, so much of the holiday season is already edible … but not everything can be cake. At least, not until now. Serving up a big slice of festive cheer, the first-ever season of “Is It Cake? Holiday” is now available to stream on Netflix. With “Saturday Night Live” cast member Mikey Day returning as the host of this hyper-realistic baking competition, “Is It Cake? Holiday” opens its doors to nine returning all-star bakers from past seasons of “Is It Cake?,” inviting them to take part in a festive frenzy full of sugar, spice and everything nice — so long as they stay off the naughty list.
According to the streamer, this “truly tinseled-out showdown” follows the show’s usual format, as “bakers will be creating cakes shaped into realistic replicas of common objects, and celebrity judges will be guessing which of them are fondant-covered fake-outs.” The twist, however, is that each and every cake will be made to emulate “festive winter items, such as ice skates, wreaths, nutcrackers and more.”
bestof ...
Contestants joining “Is It Cake? Holiday’s” first season include all-stars Jonny Manganello, April Julian and winner Andrew Fuller from Season 1; Miko Kaw Hok Uy, Danya Smith and winner Elizabeth Rowe from Season 2; and Grace Pak, Jujhar Mann and winner Henderson Gonzalez from Season 3 — each bringing their own flavor, personality and holiday traditions to the mix. Waiting to taste, ogle and rate their creations will be celebrity judges Rachel Bloom (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”), Wayne Brady (“Whose Line Is It Anyway?”), Sebastian Maniscalco (“Green Book,” 2018), Hannah Berner (“Hannah Berner: We Ride at Dawn,” 2024), Tiffany Haddish (“Girls Trip,” 2017), Devon Walker (“Everything’s Trash”), James Austin Johnson (“Saturday Night Live”), Chris Witaske (“The Bear”), Sasheer Zamata (“Agatha All Along”), Terry Crews (“Brooklyn NineNine”), Punkie Johnson (“Bottoms,” 2023), and Randall Park (“Always Be My Maybe,” 2019). “Is It Cake? Holiday” is available to stream now on Netflix.

BEST RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN MOVIES
“State Fair” (1945): Also filmed in 1962, this was the only musical Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II wrote specifically for movies. The plot takes a family to the Iowa State Fair, where “It Might As Well Be Spring” romance-wise, particularly for the relatives played by Dick Haymes and Jeanne Crain.
“Oklahoma!” (1955): Scenes filmed in the vast expanse of the open plains (in Arizona, ironically) allowed this film to show off the widescreen technique Todd-AO. Gordon MacRae and — in her first film — Shirley Jones were so well-partnered as Curly and Laurey, they would be matched again in another Rodgers & Hammerstein-based movie adaptation.
“The King and I” (1956): After his initial stage run with the project, Yul Brynner reprised the role of a lifetime — the command-
ing King of Siam, whose views are softened by schoolteacher Anna (Deborah Kerr) — in the venture that earned him an Oscar for best actor.
“Carousel” (1956): Though Frank Sinatra originally was supposed to be the male lead, Gordon MacRae ended up being reteamed with Shirley Jones in another musical about star-crossed young lovers. “If I Loved You” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” are among the song standards encompassed by the score.
“Flower Drum Song” (1961): Veteran movie producer Ross Hunter (“Pillow Talk,” “Airport”) oversaw this take on a stage musical that was based on a novel revolving around romance in San Francisco’s Chinatown community. Such longtime acting staples as Miyoshi Umeki, James Shigeta, Nancy Kwan and Jack Soo had pivotal roles in the project, whose music score included “I Enjoy Being a Girl.”
“The Sound of Music” (1965): Hardly anyone has grown up without knowing the screen version of the classic story of nun-in-training turned Von Trapp family governess Maria. That role, along with Mary Poppins, has kept Julie Andrews a favorite performer over several generations. The film and its director, Robert Wise, earned Oscars. ABC will give it its annual holiday-season telecast Dec. 15.
