style
Robert Mapplethorpe was an American photographer that was known for superb contrast in black in white photography. Mapplethorpe had two extreme type of styles. The first style was very tasteful and clean that would come out very soft and elegant. The second style came to be more raw and disturbing which actually became controversial in the late 1960’s. This style of photography actually led to the national debate over public funding for artwork.
technical process
Mapplethorpe shot with multiple types of cameras such as the Polaroid SX-70, and he also shot with a Hasselblad medium-format camera. He would also experiment with a large-format press camera. Other processes that he’d dabble in is combining photographic images printed on linen, and designing his own wooden frames.
