subject matter Suburbia always seemed like a strange place for Crewdson, since the fact that Crewdson grew up in Brooklyn. Suburban settings is where most of Crewdsons staged photographs took place. It always seemed to make the perfect narratives for his bizarre concepts. In the 90’s, Crewdsons work matured. His works during this time was Natural Wonder, Twilight, Dream House, and Beneath the Roses. He built photo sets and even started to experiment with nature sculptures. To achieve such eloborate cinematic stages, Crewdson worked with a 35-person crew. In Crewdsons recent works such as his collection “Sanctuary”(2009) and his newest series “Cathedral Of The Pines” (2014). Both focus on a whole new suject matter. Sanctuary focused on old architecture in Rome. Cathedral Of The Pines takes setting in a forest but yet still has people as the subject matter.
Technical Process Crewdson shoots with a Hasselblad Sinar 8x10 camera. He’s best known for staging scene photography using special effects. He considers and utilizes light and color in all of his photos. His photographs are all beautifully composed and tell the audience a story. Crewdson makes 10 editions of eached composed image. Each image ends up selling for $80,000 to $100,000 per print.
style Gregory Crewdson works within a photographic tradition that combines the documentary style of William Eggleston and Walker Evans with the dream-like vision of filmmakers such as Stephen Spielberg and David Lynch.
