Structural The structural system that I chose for my roofing design was a Gambrel structure. This sees the roof structure divided into a shallow and steep slope on both sides. In conjunction with gambrel an element of a flat roof is being incorporated for overhangs and balcony shelter. The exterior roof will be constructed out of steel sheeting and the interior ceiling will consist of timber. Materials The materials within the construction of the roof are predominantly timber. There is however materials such as metal sheeting for the roofing, sisalation, insulation and elements of metal as fixtures and fittings.
Timber framing – The roof framework built in a gambrel structure would use elements of seasoned laser pine, which is strong and easily obtainable. It is also available in varying sizes and therefore the same timber can be used across different elements. E.g. rafters and joists
Metal sheeting – Easy use and installation due to the clips that are incorporated into its design. The clips and sheeting design consider the movement (expansion and contraction) and therefore cater for the climates impact that it has on the roof. It is aesthetically pleasing, lightweight and very durable
Sisalation – A material used to further enclose the structure, that is non reactive to metal. It acts as a type of insulation and is made up of various layers of aluminum foil
An insulation bat – Used for monitoring temperatures within a building and consequently suits places with varying climates. Made from polyester fibres.

Construction The construction of a roofing system commences with timber framing, which in the case of my design is arranged in a structure call ‘gambrel’. The construction of this framework considers, different elements such as a ridge board, purlin’s, rafters, joists and beams. Construction can involve predominantly timber or metal construction but in the case of the design option for Murcutt Guest Studio, the Gambrel system is solely timber members arranged in a way that results in a strong and durable outcome. Depending on methods of roofing and the materials used, roofs can take large periods of time but on average roofs should take an 8-‐ week process. The plan is vital in the design for a roofing system as the different elements that are needed can be determined through the inspection of a plan. Aesthetic Design Through the choice of a roofing design, an outcome, which is appealing from both the interior and the exterior, is essential. The choice to incorporate different roofing methods, namely: gambrel, gable and flat roof, intends to achieve this visual appeal. To remain unique and innovative the structure remains open on the interior and therefore the natural beauty of timber is on display. This is to be the main aesthetic element whereby the design achieves a homely feeling.

Function It is important to have this roofing structure so that the role of shelter is fulfilled in an adequate manner. Therefore, the external factors of the environment such as rain, sun and wind along with others are able to be dealt with in a way where the built structure are not harmed in a negative way. Along with the needs of the user they’re a certain standards, which must be adhered to, and therefore quality assurance is maintained.
