HOME OF MONTEGRAPPA
The Battle of Monte Grappa was a series of battles which were fought in 1917 and 1918 during World War I between the armies of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Kingdom of Italy for control of the Monte Grappa massif, as it covered the left flank of the Italian Piave front. In the summer of 1918, in the third and final battle, the Italians launched a final offensive, with 9 Italian divisions attacking the Austrian positions on the Monte Grappa mountain, forcing the Austrian army
This battle and the greater struggle to defend the ‘Southern front’ in World War I is often overlooked by historians who focus on the more famously studied ‘Eastern’ and ‘Western’ fronts. However, the strategic foresight of the Italian general Luigi Cadorna, and the bravery and sacrifice of the Italian soldiers over the winter of 1917 to 1918, prevented the Austrian and German artillery from reaching the plains of the Veneto and gaining access to the plains of Italy and the Mediterranean sea.Today, on the peak of the Montegrappa mountain, at 1775m, stands a large and poignant memorial to the twenty five thousand soldiers who lost their lives over that fateful winter. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.
Montegrappa has dedicated special edition pen collections for some of the great thinkers, creative geniuses, influential writers, artists and historical figures unified by their tireless efforts to make the world better through their contributions to humankind. These great characters include Nelson Mandela, Khalil Gibran, Ernest Hemingway, Salvador Dali and Antonio Canova, among others. Montegrappa remembers 1918, not only as the year that Italy secured its future in the first World War at the Battle of Monte Grappa, but takes great delight in joining the celebrations of the Year of Zayed, and recognising the late Sheikh Zayed as a figure whose memory inspires future generations to strive for a better world. Montegrappa is proud to present a collection of writing instruments honouring the Year of Zayed.
