Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources accepts major credit and debit cards (MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover) for payment of programs and services. The charge will appear on your statement as “Sarasota County Parks and Recreation.”
Rental refund requests must be made in writing and submitted to Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources prior to 30 days before the date of the reservation. Each refund request is subject to a $25 administrative fee. No refunds will be granted if the request is received fewer than 30 days prior to the reservation date. Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources may reschedule the reservation if adverse environmental conditions occur, including local advisory for a tornado, hurricane watch or warning, imminent flood warning or red tide. Refund requests due to inclement weather that do not result in warnings/watches will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Some programs may not allow refunds or may not allow refunds after a certain date; refer to specific program information. There is a $25 administration fee for program refunds where applicable. Programs whose total cost is less than $25 are not eligible for a refund. There are no refunds on passes.
A dog park is a park for dogs to exercise and play off-leash under their owner’s supervision. At a dog-friendly park, dog owners can enjoy walking their dogs in designated areas, but they must be on a maximum 6-foot hand-held leash. In this guide, we’ve categorized every event or activity according to the benefit, value and impact it offers. We urge you to dive into the broad spectrum of opportunities within leisure and recreation services that pave the way for positive results.
Community: Fosters a sense of community and belonging by bringing groups of people together for cultural, recreational and entertainment activities and experiences.
Education: Includes outdoor and hands-on learning opportunities, skills development, workshops, lectures and other engaging learning experiences for a wide range of topics and subjects.
Environmental: Provides a natural classroom for environmental education, nature exploration and hands-on learning experiences for participants while acting as environmental stewards and protecting local native habitats and wildlife.
Health and Wellness: Offers physical, mental and emotional wellness benefits to the individual and/or group participants; helping reduce stress, anxiety and promoting healthier lifestyles.

Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources has always provided a variety of recreational opportunities throughout Sarasota County and that proud tradition continues through a multitude of diverse opportunities within our park system.
Residents and visitors may enjoy attending one of our many special events throughout the year, such as the Sandy Claws Beach Run at Siesta Beach or the Howl-O-Ween Movie Night Spooktacular at Ed Smith Stadium.
The county also offers Summer in the Parks, a program offering fun and safe summer recreation for children of many ages. Summer programs include Day Camp and many specialty camps.
Those looking for recreational programming more convenient to home may enjoy exercise classes, pickleball programs, community gardens, live music, community garage shows, volleyball, table tennis, basketball, tennis and more located at the nine recreation and community centers throughout Sarasota County. There are also specialty parks that offer shows, concerts, target shooting and historical tours.
In addition, the county partners with more than 100 leagues and organizations to provide athletic opportunities in a wide variety of sports such as baseball, football, soccer, softball, BMX, rowing and croquet, to name a few. Activities are available for all ages and skill-levels, from recreational to competitive play.
In partnership with Visit Sarasota County, the county also hosts numerous travel ball tournaments and sports tourism events throughout the year. These events provide opportunities for residents to compete, volunteer or spectate; and produce millions of dollars in economic impact for the local economy.

Bring the whole family to Ed Smith Stadium for a spooktacular Halloween-themed movie shown on the outfield video board. Bring your blanket to watch from the stadium seating. The Bee Ridge Bluegrass Jammers are a positive, family-friendly group of musicians who provide weekly entertainment at Bee Ridge Park. The group consists of talented players and singers who love to entertain the audience by presenting traditional bluegrass favorites. This weekly event is an opportunity for musicians in the community to get together to jam and have fun. This is a non-profit event for persons to perform to local and seasonal visitors. Community gardens provide a place for individuals to grow vegetables, fruits and herbs. Gardeners can improve their family health and nutrition while reducing food costs. Community gardens also benefit the neighborhoods where they are located by utilizing open space and promoting a sense of community pride. For a $40 membership fee, gardeners receive a garden plot, basic gardening tools, soil testing, compost and water. The Junior Sharks is a session-based group for athletes that are new to the sport and/or are working toward learning how to legally swim all four competitive strokes. Our goal is to progress athletes into competitive swimming and ensure a great experience for all the athletes. The Venice Train Depot platform has architectural appeal with its high arches and a large patio area. There is plenty of room for a large crowd, display space for vendors, band and dance area, tables and chairs. A beautiful setting overlooks the Intracoastal Waterway. The sunsets are nothing short of spectacular!
The depot is home to a caboose, built in 1974 for the Louisville and Nashville railroad. The caboose has a large, 1,920-square-foot attached patio. The patio is the perfect spot for birthday parties or small events. It’s been home to many wedding services and vow renewal ceremonies. Say your vows and have your reception just steps away on the platform or in the freight room. The patio is equipped with an elevator for guests with disabilities.

Grab the family and join our Kids’ Summer Beach Runs, one of our summer favorites in June and July. For more than 45 years, the county has celebrated the holiday season with the Sandy Claws Beach Run, a 1-mile fun run or 5K at Siesta Beach. Don’t miss the opportunity to see more than 20 of the best sand sculptors from around the world at the annual Crystal Classic International Sand Sculpting Festival. Come out and camp next to the Gulf of Mexico at Turtle Beach Campground, which features 39 RV and tent sites with full hook-ups.

Fire is a natural part of the Florida ecosystem. In order to prevent larger wildfires and to promote the health of the forest, prescribed fires are an essential tool for land managers. Join Park Naturalist and certified wildland firefighter Sean McGrail on a walk through Lemon Bay Park to discuss the role of prescribed fire, the requirements to perform them, and techniques used to ensure the safety of the surrounding areas. Please be ready for a 1.5-mile walk through potentially uneven terrain and bring any necessary sunscreen and water.

Old Miakka Preserve contains rare remnants of longleaf pine forest and Florida scrub. Join an environmental specialist on a walk through these habitats learning about the natural communities and the management methods used to restore and maintain them. If conditions are right, the trail edges may be dotted with fall wildflowers to admire including Florida paintbrush and blazing stars. Some of the trails may be wet, please wear appropriate shoes.

As urbanization spreads across the state, natural preserves are becoming islands surrounded by a sea of development. With development comes the spread of invasive species causing habitat degradation in parks. This is a major challenge for preserve managers.
