I'm thrilled to reveal a recent bedroom transformation that’s especially close to my heart. Longtime clients and dear friends Tracy and Julien entrusted us with crafting their ultimate sanctuary, and we ' re delighted with the result
As an ER doctor, Tracy needs quality sleep, so a serene, cave-like bedroom was a must. We didn’t just decorate we went all in, designing custom headboards, replacing a window with a door, and adding those special touches that brought their vision to life.
Inspired by Tracy's love for animal artwork, we blended wildlife motifs seamlessly with their cherished pieces The outcome? A cozy, stylish retreat tailored to their needs

Meet Tracy, a dedicated ER doctor, and her husband Julien, a music therapist. They came to us here at TUCK as they were embarking on a new chapter and wanted to refresh their bedroom. They hadn’t done anything with it since they purchased the house. With Tracy’s demanding shift work, they needed a space that would merge tranquility with style, and importantly, one that could be dark enough for restful sleep at any hour. They envisioned a bedroom where they could truly unwind and recharge a serene retreat that reflected their busy lives.

Tracy and Julien’s primary suite is located on the second story of their home. While the space has good bones, it was filled with a mix of hand-me-down furniture and needed some love and transformation. Fanfare Flock, a romantic contemporary design inspired by a 19th-century archive, features featherlike leaves with coordinating flock overlay, offered in Duck Egg on Dark Petrol and Ochre on Charcoal.

'Florika' from House of Hackney brings rich color to your home with its painterly paisley print inspired by the ancient silk route, showcasing that decorating with dark hues can be effortlessly chic.
“I was surprised to see Judith come up with two different floral wallpapers, and then add the striped bedspread. The geometric patterned rug that we found works perfectly in the room. I like the juxtaposition of the feminine florals with the more masculine stripes and geometric lines.” - Tracy

“The little details that Judith recommended make me smile. We asked for hooks by the bed and Judith found these lions that are so sweet but also really functional. The trays on the bedside table don't just look lovely, but having them there has stopped me from constantly knocking my glasses to the floor.”Tracy
Adding animal motifs to Tracy and Julien's bedroom was a must because Tracy loves collecting animal artworks. It's all about bringing her personal touch into the space and making it feel cozy and inviting with a hint of whimsy.
“The materials in the bedroom also do a great job of absorbing sound. When we were first doing the consultation, Julien, who has a background in music, suggested using soft materials to reduce the sound. Judith really embraced that idea and suggested a wallpaper with velvet relief for above the bed. Having that wallpaper and the velvet headboard really deadens the sound. It feels like time doesn't exist in the bedroom I love it!“

On the opposite wall, a small stained glass window, echoing the wall's shape, leads to a quaint balcony overlooking the ground floor living room.
However, due to its inefficiency, Tracy and Julien chose to replace the stained glass window with a door. This change would extend the bedroom to the balcony and

Designing a black bedroom required balancing boldness with sophistication. We incorporated textured fabrics, patterns, and metallic accents to add depth and prevent the space from feeling too dark.

Replacing The Stained Glass Window
”The "stained glass" was a plastic decal that we added in an attempt to reduce the amount of light entering, but it wasn't very effective By changing the window to a door, we have more control over how much light enters and have much easier access to the space. We keep it open all day and only close it for sleep. It also allows for the heat of the wood stove to warm the upper level in the winter.”
Tracy and Julien also added door sweeps on the doors to the balcony to prevent light and sound from disturbing their sleep!
“We converted the space into a functional balcony and it is now our little plant sanctuary. The area is really bright because there are skylights just above it.”
”The shape of the door was a challenge and it was custom made by Vantage Build They did a great job of matching the style of the doors that we use in the rest of the house.”
“We really love art and supporting local artists and galleries. When Judith was over for the consultation we pointed out which pieces that we were hoping to incorporate into the bedroom. The whale by Heather Miller is such a statement piece and I think the colors in it contributed to her design. Initially, we were going to have it framed, but the background blends so perfectly into the wall that sometimes it appears to be floating.”

On the left side wall, there’s a small nook with a window offering lovely views of the surrounding landscape, though it feels underutilized as Tracy’s vanity area.
Tracy and Julien decided to hold onto a few older furniture pieces, like the dresser.
Adding Warmth and Character with Vintage Pieces
Tracy and Julien found the dresser at a flea market in Kingston, Ontario, and picked up the dressing table from Facebook Marketplace.

“I love the little nook for the desk. It feels so decadent and relaxing to sit there, and the chair is unbelievably comfortable! I loved how Judith was able to incorporate our existing furniture with new pieces. I bought the dresser from a flea market over 20 years ago and the desk is from Facebook Marketplace. They both work so well in the room design.”
Tracy's sister handcrafted the curtains using matching fabrics from the headboard.

“I can go to bed at 9am and get my full 8 hours which I was never able to do in prior bedrooms. We have a combination of black out blinds and the dark velvet curtains to make sure no light enters. Julien added velvet bolsters to go under the doors that really cut out extra light and sound entering the room. ”
