WHY A LOOK BOOK?

TUCK TEAM

Before I’m a shop owner, I’m a citizen of Saint John. What this effectively means is that I, along with TUCK's team of six, care deeply about what happens in our city, our community and the street we work on every day. It means that we’re committed to doing all we can to drive traffic to the uptown core, to ensure that this magnificent historic preservation area is seen and experienced by as many folks as possible. Happily, over the last 6+ years our clients and community have supported our love and enthusiasm for the ‘in person, in store retail experience’. Given the onslaught of online shopping and the growth of retail giants, we at TUCK, along with every other small business, have to find creative ways to drive traffic through our doors. Happily for us, you have shown by your repeat visits and purchases that you share our confidence in the value of a welcoming small-retail experience. This look book is all about trying our best to capture the unique spirit of our store via photographic ‘vignettes’ of 122 Prince William Street, an historic gem built in 1878, the year after the great fire. Through the lens of Kelly Lawson, we hope to foster that feeling of local, uptown shopping; that is, a location where you get lovely packaging, where the store staff know you by name and you know that you are supporting local. So grab a coffee or a glass of wine and, after perusing our pages, grab your coat, your family, your friends, your pets and 'TUCK IN' to see us on Prince William Street. We’ve collaborated with Kelly on hundreds of photography projects over the years. In addition to being a wicked photographer, Kelly owns “Ella the shop” a wonderful clothing boutique across the street from us on Prince William! GOOD THINGS COME IN UNIQUE PACKAGES The one comment we hear the most from those who visit our store is, ‘You have such unique items here.’ And there is reason for that. We pride ourselves on scouring the ends of the design world to ensure that we’re the source of meaningful and beautiful design. We are interested in products with a narrative, product that tells a story: of the designer, of the materials, of the history of each design and its claim to sustainability. This Look Book features only a fraction of what we have on offer in TUCK, but we think it gives you a sense of what our studio is about. SUZANNE HILL Suzanne Hill has exhibited her work extensively over the past forty years in regional, national and international group shows as well as notable solo exhibitions. Hill has also worked tirelessly within the community for the advancement of the visual arts and has had a significant voice in the cultural affairs of the province. To that end, she has served on the provincial Cultural Policy Task Force and has been board member of artsNB, the New Brunswick Museum, the New Brunswick Visual Art Education Association and the Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation.

RYAN LIVINGSTONE Ryan Livingstone was born in New Brunswick and studied craft at NBCCD before moving to Toronto to study printmaking and painting at the OCAD-University where he received a BFA in 2010. He is in love with the process of making and would consider himself to be an artist unbound by medium. His artwork has a visual language that has been intensely shaped and influenced by his east-coast heritage as well as urban and rural landscapes. The work often reflects things within the landscape that may fade, crumble, collapse or burn away.

PAMELA MARIE PIERCE Pamela Marie Pierce is a multi-disciplinary artist who works primarily in pen and ink, watercolour, and gouache. She considers every illustration a portrait, regardless of how seemingly azoic a subject may appear. She sees the world as a series of lines, and connects those ones she can. Originally from Nova Scotia, Pamela currently works and lives in her favourite city: Saint John, New Brunswick. She is self-taught.

DAN CULBERSON Dan Culberson is a commercial, editorial, and fine-art photographer. Dan started out photographing bands and the music scene in his home town, but a desire to get to bed before 2am and a latedeveloping respect for protecting what hearing he has left has led him to currently work primarily in capturing candid photos from the built and natural world. His photographs have been exhibited at Owens Art Gallery and his first solo show at the Saint John Arts Centre featured industrial scenes and street photographs from Saint John, where he currently lives and works.

CHRISTIANA MYERS Christiana Myers is an artist and curator currently living and working in Saint John, New Brunswick. She holds a BFA from Mount Allison University and maintains a practice in painting and installation. She has completed residencies in Montreal and Finland and was an intern for the Sculpture Saint John Symposium in its inaugural year. She hold a Master's in Curatorial Practice from the Glasgow School of Art/ University of Glasgow. Christiana now works as Program Coordinator at Third Space Gallery.

CHRIS LLOYD Chris Lloyd’s artistic investigations probe the complexities of contemporary life. His projects manifest themselves in a wide range of mediums, including drawing, painting, printmaking, video, performance, installations and politics. He’s been writing a daily email to the Prime Minister of Canada since 2001, he’s collected and photographed thousands of found Tim Horton coffee cups, traveled across the country in a performance art alter-ego called ‘Everyday Goalie’, created paintings and prints direct from manhole covers and ran against Justin Trudeau in the 2015 federal election.

ALISON GAYTON Alison Gayton is a Hampton based ceramicist. She has been trained in clay around the world through apprenticeships, college, and workshops since 1997. We’re proud to offer a variety of Alison’s ceramics including mugs, bowls, vases, and ornaments. Current and past collections feature kittens, cats, Boston Terriers, fauns, skulls, and crows. The collections “Kitty Glitter” and “Boston Bling” are among her best sellers.

ROBERT MOORE Robert Moore teaches American literature at the University of New Brunswick. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, he began his formal life in the arts as an actor, then he wrote some plays, then he wrote some poetry, then he took up painting. Currently, his favourite quote about painting is from John Singer Sargant: “A portrait is a painting with something wrong with the mouth.”

THE STORY BEHIND SLAB - WOOD FROM THE HOOD Judith Mackin, owner of Tuck Studio, has worked closely with the forestry team at J.D. Irving, Limited and JMN Enterprises Ltd. to design and develop a completely original and uniquely New Brunswick furniture collection called ‘SLAB – Wood from the Hood.’ What makes this particular collaboration special is the use of the ‘slab,’ part of the tree that would otherwise be used for firewood or tissue.
