FROM THE EDITOR

THE WORLD CHANGED IN AN INSTANT.. PANDEMIC. PANIC. PURSUE.

Back in December of 2019, I had such high hopes for 2020. Wow, a new decade. New Opportunities. In spite of everything, my business did well in 2019, thankfully and I had even higher expectations for 2020. Then the pandemic. The what? Like you, I had to find the definition and figure out what a pandemic was. The rapture hadn't taken place because I was still here but everything changed in a matter of days and definitely in the past few weeks. So what did that mean for me and my clients, a lot that would change but I have to pivot rather than a full panic. I was scared, nervous and apprehensive but my mode of operation in a crisis is to keep moving. My motto is, "I can't get down into that." Why? Because if I get down too low, I don't know if I'll be able to recover. I confess that I had my doubts. I had my fears but I had too many people relying on me to fall apart. I had private, personal and intense moments but I had to come out swinging. It wasn't perfect, the technology didn't work all of the time but I had to keep moving. I couldn't afford to stop for me. You don't know how strong you really are until you are in a storm. The storm isn't completely over but I'm still standing and so are you. What's next? I don't know but we'll make it through that too. Is this issue we will talk about some changes. What does the virtual, digital and online space look like? What are 5 things your business should have moving forward? As always, what's new and upcoming from BK Royston Publishing and Royal Media and Publishing Authors.

In this issue of the Book Business Bosses, we will be talking about Promotion and what to do to step up your Promotion Game. Racism is real! Everyday a person with black skin must endure a subtle form or explicit racism, this is an everyday infliction on people whose skin is black and beautiful. This infliction can be expressed in areas such as the school system, office environment, court systems, policing and many other areas in this country. This book is a response to the reality of what black people must endure, but this is also an insight on how black people who would sell their moral, value and other black people for "chicken change."

Rev. Newby First Missionary Baptist Church helps the needy. This church is not a place where we go to hear a sermon, listen to choirs singing, or see ushers standing at the doors, marching up and down the aisles. THIS church offers emergency lodging for those in need of support services in the form of Housing, Evangelizing, Counseling and Spiritual support (HECS). “Mission” is more than just what we talk about. Rather, it is what we do to facilitate a spiritual change for individuals in need. First Missionary is not a church that stays within four walls. The Lord has called me into missions right at home and it has become my daily affairs. More about this daily affair will be mentioned later, as you travel with me to the Strange Church.

A Global Pandemic. What is that exactly? I had to listen to the news and look it up for myself. By now, we all know what a Global Pandemic is and frightened of what it could look like in the future. I realized that there were some things, projects, distribution outlets that I had on my plan to do in the future but were now essential for the present and the immediate future and not the distant future. But in the meantime, what do we do to protect ourselves and at least, move forward in this new space and time? As a business owner, I will be writing concerning my experience and new steps moving forward more extensively in the near future and it should be ready for the next issue of the magazine. But as a Book Business Boss, in the middle of the phrase and it all is not only the word Business but it is a business. How do we handle our business differently? What are five key things that you as a business owner, business building or even want to start a business should be doing?

What's

OLD BUT NOW NECESSARY? I have built my business on two things, my skill and personality. The rest I learned as I went. What software to use? What email marketing system to use? What calendar, payment systems, other software tools and tricks? I learned the other things as I went but my #1 has been my skill, what I can do and who I am as a person. If people meet me in person, they usually like me even if they don't do business with me. How does that work in the virtual, digital and online spaces? The same but quite differently. I have to show up and I have to be myself. Secondly, I've been the "Queen of Live Events" for the past 3-5 years. I show up everywhere. I would go to events in a car or catch a plane in a minute with the hopes of meeting potential new clients, speak about my business or services, sell books, enroll them in an upcoming writing cource, coach them in my author community, publish their books or a contact for my email list. I was willing to take the risk. Now, the Live Events are now online, virtual and in the digital space. I still have to show up with the same message and not in the same room, but still very, very personable with my systems in place to be able to accept payments, accept email addresses or have discovery calls immediately and accurately. IÂ tell my clients now that social media, electronic payments, going LIVE or creating videos is not an option but a must. We are all uncomfortable but we must do it in this season and time. I have determined that I must plow this field of the virtual space even if I never get to go to another in-person event again. What does that look? It feels funny but feelings don't pay bills, money does. Let's go!

Issue 7|Â 20

CURRENT LESSONS LEARNED.. More Lessons to Come.. Invest Wisely and Read the Fine Print - I invested in live events from 2nd quarter of 2020 to the end of the year. My biggest mistake was not reading the fine print of the events to see what their refund or cancellation policy was. I assumed the event would take place. In the past if I couldn't go, I would send someone else in my place. Now NO one can go and I have lost the money. My fault for not reading the fine print but I have lost my invest. Costly lesson learned. I usually combined LIVE events with meet and greets and singing but that is not the case now. My money is gone so in the future, be more careful about where to invest with live events. Digital Products and Services - I have gone into creation mode and making sure that my digital products and services can be accessed quickly and easily. My one online store changed owners. I lost everything and had to start over. Hard lesson but I did it and quickly too. (See the ad for the Royston Royal Book Store) More to come. Promotional Outlets - I tried something new, TikTok. No I am not a dancer but I am going to learn more about this new promotional outlet and determine the results. I also had to revisit my existing social media outlets and update profiles and change links, etc. New Podcast - I started a podcast and now that podcast is growing, slowly but surely. People are needing avenues to promote and podcasting is a great way to do it. I currently am not charging my guests because I'm still building an audience but look forward to monetizing that in the near future.
