Finishes Arrive! www.elzinga-volkers.com
Upcoming Milestones »» Turn over completed inpatient dialysis suite »» Complete patient room flooring »» Start elevator lobby renovation »» Install light and plumbing fixtures »» Install wall protection »» Complete ceiling grid installation
Executive Summary Finish materials can now be seen throughout the floor. In the patient bathrooms, large ceramic tiles cover the majority of the walls in a staggered pattern, and a crisp glass tile border runs mid-level to complete the look. Other finish items such as solid surface countertops, sinks, faucets, shower fixtures and bathroom accessories will be installed shortly after the tile work is finished. The bathroom groups are an exciting snapshot of the future finish items yet to be installed. Casework is another element that is adding character and shape to the area. Truckload after truckload, each section is off-loaded and carefully moved from the loading dock through the hospital and into the work area. Multiple pieces will then be organized by location, reviewed for quality, and then assembled in the corresponding room. There are hundreds of individual casework items throughout the job, and the management of this activity requires extensive coordination to ensure that all items are correct and accounted for.
In order to complete the finish work, the jobsite now plays host to more than 40 tradesmen coming from nearly a dozen different subcontractors. With consistent product deliveries added to the mix, the jobsite can quickly become congested. Our field supervision team takes on this daily coordination challenge to ensure that workers on the project site can maintain physical movement and flow. Keeping the jobsite organized and clear of non-essential items not only makes way for workers, but also increases safety and helps reduce the risk of possible damage to finish items. The Look Ahead
Looking ahead, we are installing finishes as fast as they arrive. Casework installation will be ongoing throughout the next month. We are anticipating the arrival of the doors and hardware in the near future. This will bring the project that much closer to its finished state. Meanwhile, the dialysis suite will soon be reopened for patient use, with work in the eighth floor elevator lobby beginning soon after. -Joe Shashaguay, Field Manager

Did You Know?
Many different types of fasteners are used on a construction project. A fastener is defined as a hardware device that mechanically joins or affixes two or more objects together. Recognizable fasteners include those such as nails, screws and bolts, but there are thousands of variations. Fasteners come in all shapes and sizes, each made specifically for its intended use. Some of the largest bolts ever made were built in Scotland in 1967. They were more than 27 feet long, 4 feet in diameter, and weighed in at 12.6 tons. The bolts were made to connect oil tankers as an experiment to increase bulk crude oil transport. The bolts failed, however, sheering in half shortly after setting sail and rendering fatal damage to each ship. Since then, no company has ever tried to bolt two oil takers together again.
SUBCONTRACTOR
SPOTLIGHT This month’s spotlight goes to the tradesmen of Sobie Company. Their commitment to the project and willingness to provide multitasking crews is greatly appreciated. The staggered-nature of this job has made it very complex. Their understanding of these complexities and ability to complete tasks safely has been remarkable. Thank you Sobie Company!
