Executive Summary After another very busy month of activity, the end of the project is within sight! The space has made quite the transition since our last update. One of the areas that has already been completed and turned over for patient use is the dialysis suite. This sub-phase had an accelerated schedule to limit down time of the unit. A high level of planning and organization between construction crews and hospital staff went into this mini renovation. Everything from framing inspections to state health certifications was coordinated as if this were a standalone project. Although this approach was more complex, it allowed for the area to be approved for patient use earlier. Two other sub-phases of the overall project are the 6th and 8th floor elevator lobbies. Due to the nature of these areas, managing traffic and maintaining infection control is quite a challenge. To combat these conditions and reduce interruptions, most of the work will be performed during off hours. Work on the 8th floor lobby has already begun, with

a completion goal that is in-line with the remainder of the project. Work on the 6th floor lobby will follow soon after. Back inside 8 North, finish materials are being installed on a daily basis. The majority of the casework items are now complete; only a few custom details remaining. The walls are painted with final colors and each patient room has been fitted with custom resin headwall panels. Sheet vinyl flooring has been installed in the patient rooms, and carpet has been placed in the corridors. The finish mechanical, electrical and plumbing items are almost complete as well. The acoustical ceiling tiles will soon be cut and put in place, giving the area a more finished look. Joe Novakoski, P.E., LEED A.P. Vice President / Senior PM

The Look Ahead

We are in the home stretch! We are moving right along on the finishes and work has started in the visitor elevator lobby. In the next few weeks we will be installing all of the small details; everything from the soap dispensers to the sharp containers. -Joe Shashaguay, Field Manager 8th Floor Lobby Renovation

Did You Know?

Recorded use of elevators dates back to around 250 BC. Accounts have been found showing these primitive lifting devices being powered by hand, animals or water wheels. Similar designs carried themselves through history, but it wasn’t until the early 1800s where a machine known as the “ascending room” made its debut. Using belts, counterweights and steam power, the platform was used as a tourist attraction to get a panoramic view of London. Today, elevators are a staple in modern society. To wrap up with some fun facts, Italy is the nation with the most elevators installed, nearly 850,000 followed by the United States at 700,000. The soon-to-be fastest elevator in the world will be installed in the 2,000-foot Shanghai Tower, which will be completed in 2014. The elevator will climb 1,855 feet in less than a minute, reaching top speeds of 59 feet in one second.
