Construction at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s
Bed Tower
Cafeteria www.elzinga-volkers.com
Executive Summary We are excited to launch our updated newsletter which will now highlight other ongoing E&V projects at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s including Bed Tower Renovations and The Cafeteria Renovation and Addition. Each month we will include an overview, report milestones, describe what’s to come and share photos of the projects. A bustle of activity will soon be observed with the move-in and go-live of 7 North. Starting today, June 2, our second phase of Bed Tower Renovations officially comes to a close. Not only will staff and patients move into the new space on the seventh floor, but two floors up, the temporary NICU will be ready for use as well. Soon after the shift, we will start once again on another portion of the Bed Tower with 8 South followed shortly by 7 South.
Down below, the cafeteria project is moving along full steam ahead. The addition area has been cleared, excavated and made ready for concrete footings and foundations. The outline of the new space can now be seen from above. Along with the addition is an extensive project that will provide a much needed update to the mechanical systems in that portion of the building. On the roof, demolition crews have been busy clearing away precast to make way for a new mechanical penthouse. Crews are also working in the basement, below the existing cafeteria, in preparation for a new air handling unit. Joe Novakoski, P.E., LEED A.P. Vice President / Senior PM

Cafeteria Starting Up! The Look Ahead The site has been bustling with activity the last month! Soon you will see block walls and steel going up to form the structure of the new café building. We will also set new steel on the roof for the new penthouse. So, you ask, a penthouse?! The hospital’s penthouse will house mechanical equipment and new air handling units. It’s not quite as fancy as the name implies, but it will be a helpful area to keep extra hospital equipment out of your way.
