PM Update Happy Spring (or second winter) Everyone! The cold and snow might be holding up the spring bloom outside, but lucky for us, we’re well underway with phase 2 and rooms are definitely “blossoming” on the 9th floor. In our last update we celebrated the opening of the first phase and shared news that demo was complete on phase two. Today, I’m pleased to report that construction continues to progress very well on the second phase. Over the past several weeks, framing crews have been busy giving shape to 10 new post-partum rooms, a new electric room, 2 on-call rooms and many support alcoves within the corridor. As discussed during the phase one update in the previous Inside Scoop, as the rooms take form up above, a major and complex task coincides below on the 8th floor. This is, of course, the mechanical, electrical and plumbing tie-ins associated with the new room layout. Starting with the Dialysis unit, and moving north into the 8th floor patient rooms, crews have been shutting down areas section by section in order to demo existing ceilings, cut holes in the slab above, run new drain lines, adjust ductwork, build fire rated shafts, get inspections and reconstruct everything back to its original state. This is by far the most time consuming activity on the project, but we are happy to share that we remain on schedule. While tie-ins occur on the 8th floor, all of the new mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins are also being installed on the 9th floor. As above ceiling space is limited, crews coordinate closely with one another, bending and routing where they can to make sure all of the systems will eventually fit above the ceiling grid. Drywall hangers and finishers have also taken foot within the space, working on the first set of post-partum rooms. Over the weeks to come, we will complete the through-floor tie-ins, wrap-up the mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins and hang the remaining drywall throughout. Tile crews will also begin their work in the patient bathrooms, which will officially kick off “finish” work for this phase. Finally, painters will make an entrance, adding color to door frames and patient room walls. It is definitely an exciting time for the project and we look forward to all the “blooming” that is yet to come! Brett Lesiewicz Project Manager brettl@elzinga-volkers.com

Our contractor spotlight this month goes to Dynamic Wood Solutions (DWS), who is responsible for the fabrication of all casework for the project, along with the installation of all solid surface countertops. DWS is always diligent in fabricating product well ahead of the scheduled installation date. This is incredibly valuable, as items are virtually ready at a moments notice.
