PM Summary: Construction is Underway! Field Manager

The June Bug gets its name because it appears in large quantities in the month of June. But, prior to becoming a beetle that buzzes around your outdoor light fixtures, June Bugs can live for two to three years underground as a larva before surfacing to become an adult. This is the way many projects come to life. There is a long period of the ‘below the surface’ work–the thinking and planning–before the building appears above ground and construction is underway. This year, along with the June Bugs, the Borculo Christian Schools addition emerged from the ground last month. Footings were excavated and poured for the addition and bus canopy, steel was erected, and more recently the trusses and exterior framing have progressed. In July and early August you will see the exterior masonry being placed, and roofing and windows being installed. On the inside, we will wrap up the project with new drywall, ceilings, Setting steel and paint. Construction is progressing as scheduled and completion is scheduled prior to school starting. We hope you enjoy “Side-by-Side,” a construction update newsletter to help keep everyone informed and up-to-date about the Borculo Christian School renovation and addition progression. Please feel free to contact me via email at any time. Maria Nykerk, Project Manager mnykerk@elzinga-volkers.com

SAFETY FIRST Is Your Ladder Safe?

Ladders are used by most, if not all, trades throughout various stages of construction projects...and at home. Ladder safety is extremely important not only at the jobsite, but at home as well. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind before getting on a ladder: • Inspect the ladder to assure there is no damage. • Only use a ladder on a stable and level surface. • Do not step on the top step or rung of the ladder unless it was designed for that purpose. • The OSHA Standard for portable ladders contains very specific requirement designed to ensure work safey. For example, fold out portable ladders must be able to support at least four times the maximum intended load, except extra-heavy-duty metal or plastic ladders, which must be able to sustain 3.3 times the maximum intended load.
