TEAM SPOTLIGHT

Borculo Christian School and Elzinga & Volkers extend a gracious ‘thank you’ to the individuals and contractors who have donated portions of work toward this project.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. –Ephesians 2:10

Another month is behind us and the project progress shows it! The onsite staff have been putting in long hours to get where we are today. The exterior is beginning to take on a complete look with brick, roofing, and metal panels installed. The concrete sidewalks have been placed and soon you will see landscape plantings going in. On the inside, the drywall has been hung and finished and final painting is in progress. Over the remaining weeks flooring will be placed and the final touches will be made in the space. As we wrap up the month, and complete the project in time for students and staff to return to school, I can’t help but realize how contractors and teachers are alike. They are both: • Jugglers. Teachers juggle many students, the curriculum, the parents and other staff. Contractors juggle multiple trades, clients, deliveries and schedules. • Creators. Teachers create educated young adults by planting seeds of knowledge throughout childhood. Contractors create buildings by assembling a myriad of materials over time. • Problem Solvers. Each student is different, which means that teachers need creative minds in order to tailor their lessons to individual needs to create the same learning opportunities. In much the same way, each project varies and has its own set of circumstances. Contractors customize their approach to every project to assure a quality final product. Surviving the Heat!

Construction workers wearing protective clothing on the job feel the heat no matter what the weather, but especially during the hot, humid months of summer when you lose water from excessive sweating. When you’re dehydrated, you cannot think as clearly and energy levels drop. Here are a few tips to help you avoid dehydration and beat the heat: • Hydrate. Drink cool water frequently, even if you’re not thirsty. It’s important to always have water within reach. • Exercise. Stay in good physical condition. Extra weight means more work, sweat and risk. Try to walk, bike or hit the gym. • Eat right. Eat light meals during the hottest hours and avoid highfat greasy foods, which will zap your energy and bring on fatigue. • Avoid air conditioning. Try not to go in and out of air conditioning since it will make it more difficult for you to adjust to the heat. • Watch for Heat Exhaustion/Heat Stroke. Watch for symptoms including dizziness, headache, sweaty skin, weakness, cramps, nausea or vomiting and rapid heart beat. Additionally, heat stroke symptoms include hot, dry skin, mental confusion, convulsions and loss of consciousness. If anyone shows these signs, call 911 right away. OSHA requires that employers are responsible for providing workplaces free of known safety hazards, which includes protecting employees from excessive heat and need to establish a complete heat illness prevention program.
