BUILDING BOVEN Holland Hospital - Boven Birth Center Renovation - Construction Update Newsletter

SETTING STEEL

April Update

Jared Andersen Project Manager

March was very busy for progress on Phase 1 renovations of Boven. Interior framing has been moving ahead at full steam. The crews were quick to hang the HVAC duct work and plumbing from the ceiling. Electrical conduits have added to the maze of pipe and equipment that will be above the ceiling. Mechanical work has also started above, below and in adjacent spaces to support this newly renovated unit. The small addition to the west of phase 1 is fully underway. This very complex portion of the project is a necessity in adding needed office spaces and connectivity to the new Boven design. This work involves removing a small portion of roof from the hospital and creating a finished floor with new exterior façade. Stay tuned as this phase continues to show a glimpse of what the newly renovated space will look like in the coming months.

FUN FACT Working in an occupied facility and maintaining necessary operations can be a challenge. Coordinated shut downs and temporary work are required by the project team as we move through this 33,205-SF renovation. This is on a relatively small scale when compared to the 21 square miles of construction on Dubai’s Al Maktoum Airport. This is considered one of the most complex and expensive current construction projects on Earth. Roughly 16,500 times the size of the Boven Renovation, coordination and communication are without a doubt necessary in maintaining customer and passenger safety at all times.

Building Boven - Construction Update Newsletter Holland Hospital - Boven Birth Center - April 2018

Looking Ahead Chris Workman, Assistant Field Manager ChrisW@elzinga-volkers.com | 616.914.1982 We are going to be setting steel starting Monday, April 23rd, as well as starting to tie in sanitary lines in the Endoscopy unit below our construction space. We are looking forward to having the steel set as it gives us the opportunity to take down our temporary roof which has done a great job of holding water out of the building. Framing continues to happen on the north side of the building, as well as mechanical and electrical rough-ins. The trades have been working through the BIM (building information modeling) coordination process and each piece of the puzzle is coming together nicely. In the upcoming weeks, we will also be working through the phasing of the current IT closet that controls many of the critical items in the existing Boven Birth Center.

SAFETY Matters Alive365: Keeping A Clean Project Site We have said it before, and we will say it again…a clean site is a safe site. Elzinga & Volkers and our trade contractor teams continuously focus time and energy on cleaning and organizing the site. A lot of debris can be generated from wood framing and roofing and since this work was completed in the winter, much of the debris was covered by snow. The “spring cleaning” that we completed onsite will further protect our workers, staff and patients from potential risks onsite.

FHC has been a great trade partner to work with for many years at Holland Hospital. Their knowledge of the systems at the hospital and also hospital protocols make our job much easier from a management point of view. They helped identify issues in demo and have responded quickly to everything we need them to do. Oftentimes, we have things that need to happen after hours, and they don’t blink an eye at helping us accomplish our goals in order to keep the schedule on track.
