SELECTIVE DEMO OF 1947 BUILDING

Nate Stuart Field Manager

Welcome To Your Construction Update Newsletter! Welcome to the first edition of “Building Boven”. Our intentions for this newsletter is to provide a monthly snapshot of construction progress on the Renovations of Holland Hospital’s Boven Birth Center. This 3 phased, 28 month renovation will “update” every part of the existing obstetric unit providing a more usable and welcoming space to both patients and staff.

Julie Cole Assistant Project Manager

The past month has been a busy one as we get this exciting project underway. The demo crew has mobilized for phase one taking out old walls and mechanical equipment. The team has started in what was an abandon lab area of the hospital. This area built in the 1940’s to 1950’s was in much need of a refresh. We will be taking the space down to the bare concrete structure to be rebuilt with a completely new design. Please stay tuned as we track this project’s progress in the coming months. Right now we are working on finishing up some minor demolition, floor prep, wall layout and exploring new MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) routes through occupied areas of the Hospital. We will begin wall framing and MEP rough-ins for Phase 1 within the next two weeks. At that same time we will begin demo of an existing roof structure and exterior wall to make way for the new addition. Temporary waterproofing for this work will be a challenge. Elzinga & Volkers’ self-perform crews will be erecting the steel and pouring the new concrete slabs for the addition.

SAFETY Matters Fun Fact: What Is PPE? A term you might hear on our site, but may not be familiar with is PPE, which stands for Personal Protective Equipment. Examples of PPE include items such as gloves, high visibility clothing, foot and eye protection, protective hearing devices and hard hats. Some of these items, like hard hats and eye protection, are required 100% of the time on-site, while others, like gloves, are required only when performing certain tasks. Elzinga & Volkers exceeds OSHA standards when it comes to PPE to ensure that all of our workers return home safely every day.

Allied Mechanical Services has completed 95% of first phase demo. They ran into quite a few hurdles during this process. Just figuring out where plumbing and mechanical are running to and coming from is a chore in a facility of this age. And trying to trace all these lines through occupied spaces is never easy. Their team is doing a great job with this work and we are grateful to have them on our team.
