TEMPORARY ROOF OVER THE ADDITION
March Update
Julie Cole Assistant Project Manager
Over the past month, the construction team has been very busy diving head first into Phase I of this project. We are happy to report the demolition of Phase I is complete. Wall layout and framing has begun, giving us a glimpse of what the space is going to look like when it is finished. A new room layout was created to provide a space that is better suited for a modern Birthing Unit. In other words, all the new walls will be in different locations from the old layout. The small addition on the West side of the building is underway. Demolition of the existing roof structure and exterior wall of this small area was necessary in order to support the new structure above. You may have noticed the temporary roof and temporary plastic in this area. These items will keep the weather conditions at bay as we complete this complex part of the project.
FUN FACT Allied Mechanical, Town & Country and Elzinga & Volkers removed 40 tons of debris by hand during the demolition of Phase 1. To put that in perspective, the team pulled over 10 full size elephants worth of debris out of Phase I.
Overall, the project is going very well and we have an excellent group of trade contractors working with us. With that, we hope you enjoy this newsletter and the many that follow! Julie Cole, Assistant Project Manager JulieC@elzinga-volkers.com

MEP rough-ins and framing are in progress on the North half of Phase 1 which includes 12 new postpartum rooms. Work has also begun on the West addition which will include new offices and a corridor connecting the newly renovated space with the existing birthing unit. The addition is being built on top of an existing roof so we have built a temporary roof over the area and are now removing the existing roofing and decking. We are also re-routing some MEP’s in the space below to make way for the new steel. Once the existing roof structure is removed our steel crew will begin structural framing of the addition.
SAFETY Matters Alive365: Safety Week Last week, E&V kicked off our 5th annual Safety Week with our Safety Symposium. The event was subtitled, Developing a World Class Safety Culture and focused on guiding attendees through the steps of establishing such a culture in their corporations. Any person in the West Michigan construction industry who is responsible for ensuring safety in their organization was encouraged to attend. Nine training sessions were also held on the following topics throughout the remainder of the week: First Aid, CPR and AED, Lift Training, OSHA 10 Hour, Scaffolding Training, Silica Standard, Fall Protection, Qualified Rigger and Lunch with MIOSHA. Over 500 people participated in this week of events and E&V is proud to be a part of building a better safety culture throughout West Michigan.

Town & Country Electric has been a great partner through the demo phase and the early rough-ins. They have been very thorough in identifying issues and resolving them in the early stages. This will be instrumental in keeping the project on schedule.
