PROJECT MANAGEMENT UPDATE
Steel bars embedded in the concrete reinforce building foundations. When these bars protrude from the concrete to allow other materials or concrete pours to connect, special caps are placed to reduce the risk of someone being impaled if they fall onto that area of the site. You can see thousands of these little orange caps on large construction sites, including ours.
As I’m sure all of you are aware, Groundhogs Day 2018 results are in and according to legend, we’re in for six more weeks of winter as Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow. Despite this news, the construction team has been moving forward with the not so ideal weather to keep the schedule on track. This month’s highlights include the first of the concrete foundation and footing pours for both the Wellness Center and the Kresge Addition. Dan Faulkner has been working closely with Creative Cement to take advantage of any breaks in the weather to pour the trenched footings for the Kresge Addition. In order to protect the concrete from the harsh temperatures, the construction team has been covering the finished concrete with “blankets”. Since concrete generates its own heat, these blankets allow for the curing process to take place despite the daily frigid temperatures. With the North wing of Benson out of the way, the footprint for the new Kresge Addition can begin to take shape and the construction of all three projects on campus will be in full effect.
