BRIDGE DEMOLITION

A CLEAN JOBSITE IS A SAFE JOBSITE Keeping a construction site clean is not just about aesthetics, but is a crucial step to ensure a safe workplace to prevent slips, trips, and falls. According to OSHA, cluttered working conditions are distracting, unsafe, and unsanitary. If clean-up is neglected, the jobsite can quickly become hazardous. Nails, screws, sharp tools, dust, and debris are only a few of the things that must be continuously cleaned up. Safety is always a top priority for E&V.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT UPDATE I’m sure all of you have noticed as you look out your windows that the construction site has endured some drastic changes. The connector bridge that once joined the Benson building and Dancey House has been demolished, as well as the South Wing of Benson. The execution of this task involved extensive planning and preparation to ensure that everyone remained safe. The first step in this process was to disconnect the South wing of the Benson building from the North wing. This was achieved with the use of a remote controlled demolition robot that moved from the 4th floor to the 1st floor removing a portion of the concrete structure (ceiling) above it. Once the separation was completed, the connector bridge was sawcut to disconnect the structure from the existing Dancey House. Piece by piece the demolition contractor pulled the connector bridge back onto the portion that separated the South wing of Benson and the remaining North wing to contain the debris. The excavator then used the rubble to gain elevation before carefully pulling down the remaining portion of the South wing, working from the 4th floor to the 1st floor. Stay tuned for future updates from the site and we hope that you are enjoying all the action. It’s just the beginning! Jordan Gougeon, Project Manager JordanG@elzinga-volkers.com
