Building Together Canterbury on the Lake - Facility Addition & Renovations
Iris Dining Room Demo
Monthly Funny
PM Summary Our crews have been working hard on the Memory Care Addition. In the North wing, the resident rooms are close to complete with carpet, tile, sheet vinyl, and final paint installed. The drop ceiling grid is installed in the common areas allowing for trades to put in their final fixtures. In the South Wing, the bathroom tile is nearly complete and the mechanical, electrical and plumbing infrastructure in the corridor is done. The memory garden is complete except the pergolas and a few final touches. I’m sure it will be very popular with the residents! The concrete and sitework crews have been taking advantage of any days without rain to be ready for asphalt paving. This has been a challenge because the clay soil takes a long time to dry out after rain. There has also been great progress on the connector bridge and all the utilities that go through the connector to serve the addition. The Iris dining room was taken offline and we have completed the demolition, framing and exterior walls of the expanded space. Crews have been added to focus on this area while not taking anyone away from our sprint to the finish line in the Memory Care Addition. Unfortunately, this influx has caused parking issues and we are working daily to limit our impact on Canterbury.
2016-2017 Michigan Contractor of the Year
In the Health Center, we are in the 9th and final phase of renovation. The temporary walls have been reconfigured, demolition is complete, and the floor has been cut and removed where new plumbing piping will be placed. This phase has the additional challenge of not having direct access to an outside door within the construction area. So, material and debris routes were carefully planned and are being kept clean throughout the day as we use them. We couldn’t thank the staff and residents enough for their patience through this process! Best regards,
2016-2017 WINNER Elzinga & Volkers, Inc.

The South wing has been phased after the North wing so, in this area, there are a few patches of drywall to complete, ceiling grid and devices to be installed and final paint and flooring to be installed. These same items are left to be completed in the connector as well. In the Memory Garden, the pergolas and mulch are the last items to finish the area.
Phase 9

The Iris room will soon see drywall, a finished ramp and the completion of all the new bulkheads, mechanical equipment and electrical rough ins. While on the site, asphalt paving, fire lane grass paves, more irrigation and some additional landscaping and seeding will be installed. Some of the landscaping and irrigation work will need to be completed in the spring when particularly wet areas of the site can dry out and allow the workers to complete their scope. In the meantime, however, they will get done as much as mother nature allows.

Everyday an estimated 1,000 eye injuries occur in U.S. workplaces. The financial cost of these injuries is enormous – more than $300 million per year in lost production time, medical expenses, and worker’s compensation. No dollar figure can adequately reflect the personal toll these accidents take on the injured workers. Because of the high frequency of eye injuries on construction sites, Elzinga & Volkers requires all tradespeople and visitors to wear OSHA approved safety glasses while on site. We are in the final stretch of this project and the jobsite looks more like the finished product every day. In the North wing, we are substantially complete. The items left to complete include things such as installing ceiling tiles, bathroom accessories and punch list.

TEAM Health Care Renovation SPOTLIGHT Who’s Who On Site

Looking Ahead Anthony Pipitone, Field Manager AnthonyP@elzinga-volkers.com | 586-265-1410
Upcoming Renovation Project Happenings In the next 4-6 weeks, the last of the resident rooms will undergo demolition, concrete removal, and underfloor plumbing for added restroom showers. The employee lounge is also getting a facelift along with a new restroom. This is the final phase of the Health Center Renovation, so final touches and finishing the remaining corridor carpeting will soon take place. For the most part, all jack hammering and concrete cutting is complete so noise levels have come down to a more comfortable level.
Juan Barajas
Heritage Landscaping Juan is married with three children (all boys - 11, 7 and 5) and you can tell he is proud of them when he talks. Juan has led his crew to perform in two days what others were saying would take 1-1/2 weeks (prep and install the maintenance strip around the Memory Care building). The crew has worked through the mud and is about to complete this portion of the work. They will then begin to perform final grade in several locations around the Memory Care and Connector areas. The crew has worked safely with all PPE on at all times.
