BUILDINGTOGETHER A SEASON TO REFLECT ON BLESSINGS The holiday season is a time for many to spend with their families or friends outside of work. During this season, I like to reflect on the many blessings we are given. First, I feel so blessed to be able to come to a place every day where I feel valued and a part of something great. To work as a team and accomplish new goals and overcome challenges together is so rewarding and fulfilling.

health and human services, law enforcement, culture and much more. I have thoroughly enjoyed touring different non-profits, as well as thriving and innovative businesses in our community, and learning about all the ways they are serving West Michigan. This is an area that loves its people and loves to give back. There are great organizations in this area working to provide food, housing, counseling, and much more to those in need. It’s enlightening to hear other businesses speak about culture that is similar to ours and how they are treating their teams with care and concern.

I consider it such a blessing to work on something I’m passionate about. Recently, I was talking with a friend of mine and he was telling me that he doesn’t really speak to anyone at his work. He comes in, does his job, and tries to get home as soon as possible. That was so sad to hear. I can’t imagine doing that day in and day out. What a gift for us to be able to work with people we truly care about and who share a passion for what they do.

One favorite quote I heard from a panelist was “People are your greatest assets. It’s not that you own them, it’s that you owe them.” This business owner understood as we do here at Elzinga & Volkers that happy and fulfilled employees create better projects and raving fans.

Being part of the West Coast Leadership class has also opened my eyes to the blessings this company has in being part of the West Michigan community. The class lasts for nine months and focuses on different aspects of our community, including topics like the local economy,

So in this holiday season, I hope you will take a minute to step back and reflect on all your blessings from this past year and be hopeful and eager for 2019 and all it will bring. It looks like it will be a very exciting year and I can’t wait to experience it with all of you!

THANKS FOR YOUR HARD WORK! For those of you who don’t know I’ve had the pleasure of acting as the field manager on a project in Zeeland for a company called ODL. Our scope of work on this project was removing 18,000-SF of existing concrete in front of 13 loading docks and replacing it with new 6” concrete. During that process we also lowered the existing grade by approximately 3-feet over this area so the docked trailers sit level on the new pad when against the building. More than 90% of this project scope of work was performed by our own sitework division and concrete crew. Over the last two months, I have witnessed firsthand how these two divisions work together to accomplish tasks. The site has given us a fair share of difficult challenges between wet weather in November and freezing temperatures in December, along with slough of underground utilities. The scope of work included a high pressure 8” fire main, high-pressure gas line and high-voltage power. Tom and Jeff DeJonge, along with Tyler Compagner have done a phenomenal job dealing with these challenges and have out performed Mother Nature! Our concrete crew, Roye Allen, Christian Skinner, Terry Baer, Roger Geurink, Micah Reynhout and Tyler Sterken, have worked their tails off in the same weather installing 60% of the total concrete including a 60-foot new concrete retaining wall. All of these men have impressed me with their knowledge, ability and most importantly, great attitudes! Being able to see the work that they do on a daily basis makes me proud to work for Elzinga & Volkers! Please give them a pat on the back the next time you see them and let them know you appreciate what they do. I know I sure do! Brian White General Superintendent
