EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE CONNECTION: HELPING THOSE IN NEED Winston Churchill once said, “You make a living by what you get, you make a life by what you give.” This quote struck me as I was reflecting back on the last six weeks at Elzinga & Volkers and the amazing generosity that our work family has shown when they are asked to help someone in need. Many of you have heard about the recent health issues that have struck Nolan Brouwer, the four-month old son of Tara Brouwer, our Project Administrator. Nolan was diagnosed with a form of cancer called neuroblastoma just a week after Tara returned from maternity leave. The E&V family has shown tremendous support for the Brouwer family by donating time, money, and not least of all, many prayers for Nolan as he works through medical treatments. I would also like to acknowledge those who have stepped up to help fill Tara’s responsibilities at work while she cares for her child. Your response to this fellow employee in need has been incredible and if you are tracking Nolan’s progress, I truly believe that your support and prayers are helping him battle the disease. For more information on the Brouwer family and Nolan, search for the group, “No Fear Nolan” on Facebook. You may have also caught one of the recent news stories about our project at the Ronald McDonald House® of Western Michigan (RMDHWM). Crews from E&V are completely renovating the entire facility to better serve families whose children are receiving medical treatment in Grand Rapids. Our team has already done a number of small things to support the mission of the organization and just cooked a BBQ dinner for the entire staff and guests on June 21. If

Safety Meeting also had a chance -W in s ton Churchill to hear about our new Employee Assistance Program which offers a variety of support services to our employees and their families, free of charge. Services include financial counseling, legal advice and resources for a number of common family challenges. More information on the Employee Assistance Program can be found at http://evc.acieap.com/ The stories above are just a snapshot of the many initiatives, activities and events that are happening around E&V to support the community and those in need. Our Community Initiatives committee has scheduled various events throughout the year which are announced at our monthly Safety Meetings. We also encourage any employee to bring ideas and information to the Community Initiatives committee when they recognize someone in need. We are a blessed group at E&V, and together, we can use those blessings to make a real impact on individuals, families and our community.
