EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE CONNECTION: HELPING THOSE IN NEED Winston Churchill once said, “You make a living by what you get, you make a life by what you give.” This quote struck me as I was reflecting back on the last six weeks at Elzinga & Volkers and the amazing generosity that our work family has shown when they are asked to help someone in need. Many of you have heard about the recent health issues that have struck Nolan Brouwer, the four-month old son of Tara Brouwer, our Project Administrator. Nolan was diagnosed with a form of cancer called neuroblastoma just a week after Tara returned from maternity leave. The E&V family has shown tremendous support for the Brouwer family by donating time, money, and not least of all, many prayers for Nolan as he works through medical treatments. I would also like to acknowledge those who have stepped up to help fill Tara’s responsibilities at work while she cares for her child. Your response to this fellow employee in need has been incredible and if you are tracking Nolan’s progress, I truly believe that your support and prayers are helping him battle the disease. For more information on the Brouwer family and Nolan, search for the group, “No Fear Nolan” on Facebook. You may have also caught one of the recent news stories about our project at the Ronald McDonald House® of Western Michigan (RMDHWM). Crews from E&V are completely renovating the entire facility to better serve families whose children are receiving medical treatment in Grand Rapids. Our team has already done a number of small things to support the mission of the organization and just cooked a BBQ dinner for the entire staff and guests on June 21. If

cooking the meal was not enough, the E&V family, almost totally unsolicited "You make a and in about 2 hours, raised $1,000 living in donations for needed kitchen items. by what you g et, Simply amazing. you make a li fe by Those who attended our most recent what you giv e." Safety Meeting also had a chance -W in s ton Churchill to hear about our new Employee Assistance Program which offers a variety of support services to our employees and their families, free of charge. Services include financial counseling, legal advice and resources for a number of common family challenges. More information on the Employee Assistance Program can be found at http://evc.acieap.com/ The stories above are just a snapshot of the many initiatives, activities and events that are happening around E&V to support the community and those in need. Our Community Initiatives committee has scheduled various events throughout the year which are announced at our monthly Safety Meetings. We also encourage any employee to bring ideas and information to the Community Initiatives committee when they recognize someone in need. We are a blessed group at E&V, and together, we can use those blessings to make a real impact on individuals, families and our community.

A DAY IN THE LIFE Follow Brian through a typical day on the jobsite at North Ottawa Community Hospital...
7:30 AM to Noon »» Review work items with the hospital and Christman on any pressing items or added work. »» Get my tool belt on and work with the carpenters until I get pulled away to deal with phone calls, emails and/or questions. This seems to repeat itself throughout the day. »» Make a list of materials/tools we may need.
4:30 AM - 5:00 AM »» Wake up and usually change the baby’s diaper before my wife feeds her, and do whatever else needs to be done. The house can have a flurry of activity at this hour. »» Get myself put together and make the hour trek to Grand Haven to work on the NOCH renovation project.
6:30 AM - 7:30 AM »» Meet with the carpenters and go over what we need to work on that day. »» Go through emails and figure out what materials need to be checked on delivery or ordered.
Brian Englishman Field Manager
In Brian's free time, he enjoys playing golf and spending time with his family.
NOON - 12:30 PM »» Eat lunch, keeping the Biggest Loser contest in mind, and save room for the orange that Dan Parcels brings me.
12:30 PM - 4:30 PM
»» Work on casework install or whatever needs to be done that day »» Review items at end of day, what we need for tomorrow, and possibly stop at the shop or Home Depot on my way home for supplies we may need.
5:30 PM »» Arrive home, make dinner with my wife and try to get our two year old to eat something before we either go play outside or watch Zootopia for the 100th time. BUILDINGTOGETHER | June 2016

Our Little Fighter– "No Fear Nolan" Update Upon learning that baby Nolan was diagnosed with cancer, E&V employees jumped into action by donating time, money and lots of prayers. Because so many of you have offered support in various ways, we want to provide updates about Nolan's health to keep you informed on his progress. Currently, Nolan is recovering at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital from surgery he had on Tuesday, June 21 to remove his adrenal gland and biopsy a tumor on his liver. "They took a dime size area of the liver to biopsy and it will take 3-5 days to get the results back from the pathologist..." Tara noted on FB. The biopsy results will verify the type of cancer. "Now we are getting settled and trying to let him sleep and keep him as comfortable as possible." For more frequent updates, visit Nolan's FB page: Nolan-"No Fear Nolan"
